Star Wars Episode III: Labyrinth Of Evil (Released) — Page 29

I actually re-watched the ending of Revenge of the Sith, and I gotta say, John Williams’ score from Padmé’s funeral to Vader and Palpatine looking out over the Death Star is really well done, sounding very powerful and tragic. I was wondering if maybe you were going to adjust the music cue from the deleted scene with Yoda to the Star Destroyers in space. I do love the usage the used of Padmé surviving, but the transition from the scenes I just mentioned does feel a bit abrupt in Labyrinth of Evil. You could re-score the deleted scene of Yoda arriving on Dagobah, as it does sound like Yoda’s theme was thrown onto the scene for the DVD release of Episode III.

About “General Skywalker.” That title is nowhere in the films and, while it’s plausible, I just don’t see benefit in tossing it in there. It’s appropriate for Anakin to be something of “the learner” and Anakin moves along in this film as someone deeply accustomed to be something of a slave. He and Obi-Wan are both knights, but he’s certainly newer at it.
Anakin having a padawan of his own prior to Episode III never felt right to me, personally.

100% with you here. I love The Clone Wars but it never felt like a bridge between AotC and RotS to me. I’ve always imagined that it’s its own thing, in sort of a parallel universe. Clone Wars (2003), on the other hand… but enough derailing the thread.

I’m afraid I am not having any luck with removing Palpatine’s lines about the Jedi killing “all the senators” and Anakin believing the Jedi will move against the Senate. The rear channels are free of dialogue… some of the time, but not during a critical shot. The music playing at that point does not appear on the soundtrack, either. I can’t do anything further than I already have with that conversation without making a big mess out of the music. Hopefully in this version we can somewhat believe that Anakin is choosing to believe these things about the Jedi.

Do you consider using stuff from “The Ultimate Edition” of the soundtrack which can be found on YouTube? You may be able to find the isolated music for the scene you’re looking for there.

Hmmmmmmmm… I cannot promise anything, but it miiiiight be worth reissuing TAS, even if I don’t change anything, just to include Mala’s audio tracks in the main release. I’ll have to think about this; it’s never a trivial amount of work.

I remember when I created the alternate track for TAS that I corrected two sections: the Obi-Wan leaving Coruscant deleted scene was only 2.0 so I recreated your cuts to update the scene in 5.1 (using the original deleted scene from your myspleen package); and during the meeting of Anakin with Padmé, the C6 rear channel was missing (from around 0:09:21 for like almost 3 minutes - I believe I duplicated the C5 channel to fill the gap).

I believe you also mentionned you liked the idea of removing all dialogues when Anakin goes to search his mother. If you still wish to add it to your track, fine with me 😉

There was also a video issue during the credits, the image has a weird bug (at exactly 1:48:00).

(yeah I always watch the entire end credits of a SW movie 😄)

So if you’re thinking about re-releasing TAS, here are still a few small things you would correct.

(and before others put it on the table: your edit is perfect, at the only exception of the narrative issue of entirely removing the factory scene; but I know you loathe that scene so much it’s out of the question 😃 )

NFBisms added in a couple Dee Bradley Baker "General Skywalker"s in his edit and it worked fine for me, and I’m usually real picky about that shit. Mala also made an alternate audio track for Hal’s edit and included these bits from NFBisms as well.

In fact I took the idea from NFBisms but I did recreate the excepts I used. I don’t remember where NFB placed them, but I made two radio like voiceovers (to somehow try to hide it’s not Temuera’s voice) during the first 20 minutes of Hal’s edit.

Aaahhh, that’s where my confusion came from!

I’ll probably make my own track with NFBism’s Grievous “General Skywalker” line (and blackjack and hookers). If I don’t ever get around to actually making my own edit(s), of course. 😉

Damn, you’re right about those two audio issues, Mala. That’s unnerving. I guess that alone merits fixing. Thanks for letting me know about those.
I noticed the end credits glitch a while ago, and when I did [Tourette’s Guy] I said, “Shit.” [/Tourette’s Guy]

Here’s a new version of this scene, with the music in much better shape. I used left and right channels to fill in the center whenever there is no dialogue or non-traffic foley, in order to only have one innocuous crossfade of the musical score. Sounds much better.

Question: How was Obi-Wan able to see a hologram of Anakin bowing to Sidious in the Jedi Temple? Did Sidious go to the Jedi temple after all the Jedi were killed? Surely Obi-Wan can’t access security holograms fro Palpatine’s office from the Temple? I don’t think Palpatine would’ve been able to keep his identity secret for very long if that was possible.

It does seem to indicate that the hologram is coming from the temple and not Palp’s office from the prior video clips. So it must indicate that Palp’s did go there. This makes me think like how a president will visit an area struck by a major disaster of some kind. For Palp’s, his “official” reason for him is to inspect the temple after the so-called Jedi Rebellion (Historical site you know!) … but his true reason was to inspect Anakin’s work, and loyalty since they have begun the Master and Apprentice relationship.

Gotta say it works because I have no idea what you changed from the original version, and it doesn’t feel rushed in the least. Great job! I say Yea.

Oh, I watched with the volume turned way down, so it sounded like the regular force choke noise. Good idea though! Maybe it’s a bit loud?

The idea is good, but I think it needs to sound more muffled, like it’s coming from inside the body (try a low-pass filter). I think I heard somewhere that the sound of Vader choking someone was made by crushing walnuts inside an orange to get a moist cracking sound. Perhaps your sound is lacking the squishy “orange” part of it, as well.

By the way, concerning this scene, something that’s always distracted me is how in the last shot the water fountain’s noise suddenly comes in really loud, despite not being there for every other shot in the scene. I wonder if it annoys anyone else? And if so, if it’s fixable/worth the effort?

I agree it needs a more squishy sound. Also, I would remove the first “pop” before she speaks. The reason being is she isn’t really struggling to say anything, her voice isn’t really grasping for air … so by only having the “popping” sounds after she speaks shows the grip is tightening enough to cause the sounds.

But I do like the idea of having such sounds since it really adds more depth to the moment and echoes to the “soon-to-be-Vader-we-all-know”.

Okay, thanks, I’ll try revising the specifics of the cracking sound.
And if the fountain in the apartment is only in one or two of the front channels, I suppose it would be easy to introduce more gently. I’ll try it and see.

It’s an interesting idea for an edit of Episode III, but I think the scene worked well, even without the subtle sounds added.

I’m not sure I see the benefits of this alteration in your edit. If you were keeping Padmé dying, it would be a good idea indeed in order to remove the “lost the will to live” dialogues, but since Padmé lives in your edit, I don’t think this sound addition is necessary.

I’m probably overanalyzing it, but my thinking is:
ROTS emphasizes that she is okay despite passing out (Obi-Wan even kneels to check on her) specifically so that the reason for her death can be due to emotional anguish, which is made explicit later.

In LOE, it is again emphasized that she’s fine, and she goes on to survive the movie, with the robots telling us that she was badly injured. We need to infer she will die eventually from what happened, with no textual reason to believe it will be due solely to long-form emotional anguish. I actually think the bone cracking is helpful in any fan edit, both Boleyn or regular (removing the ‘lost the will to live’ and even ‘we don’t know why’ lines).

I did tone down the effect, removed high frequencies, and moved it to after she speaks. If you weren’t watching the edit on a good sound setup and paying attention it would be easy to miss, but it’s there.

I agree with that and like that direction, connects the dots between this and the original trilogy since she did die while Leia was very young.

I am unable to remove the sounds of 3PO’s servos as he walks during the shot of Obi-Wan carrying Padme off her ship and Bail saying they will take her to medical center. If the droids are indeed painted out of the birthing scene, they will still be depicted leaving the ship. If that’s the case, do you think its worth removing them from witnessing the birth?

JEDIT: I removed the shot, and it looks pretty okay. Nevermind.
