Yeah, it is possible that some Jedi before the Empire were trying to find the origins of the Jedi. Presumably the origins of the Jedi were lost to time. I believe in the recent audio drama, Dooku: Jedi Lost, a character refers to the temple on Ossus as the first Jedi Temple, so it does seem the origins of the religion became lost even to the Jedi over the 25,000~ years of their history.

So maybe the Jedi had started the anthropological research for one purpose, the Empire continued it for another, and then Luke and Lor San followed their footsteps.

Obviously this is more of a head-canon than theory I guess, but you could say it is a head-canon that attempts to be grounded in what we know. And it is kind of cool because it has its own story behind it, like it could be covered in a novel or comic.
