I just came across this short video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6N0P-qsXxUY

I like shot composition better shows how the death star is not yet in range. Plus the extra fighters.

The composition is nice but the CGI is very basic and dated (basic light, depth of field and materials).
For decent CGI take a look at “Star Wars: Destroyer - A Star Wars Fan-Film” or “The Lost Starfighter - Star Wars Fan Film”. Your own Falcon replacement was also quite good.

OK, another video came up on my feed that I’ve never seen:

Yep, much better this one. Still, the CGI looks basic in places (like some Death Star shots).
But I do like the composition and camera dynamic.

Opening Test Shot #2. I decided to entirely replace this shot with CGI. Original models taken from the Blu-ray just didn’t match rest of the VFX in terms of image quality.

That’s okay! Honestly there are and will be a lot of different versions of ANH edits, so I think you should follow your instincts on this to make your version stand out. I think it is gonna look great and it will be cool to see these classic scenes in a new way!

It’s interesting how the Special Editions are highly criticized, yet these fan edits are praised. Don’t get me wrong. These look cool. It’s just that we as Star Wars fans are difficult to fathom.

The key difference is that these edits aren’t the only official home media releases that Lucasfilm makes available. These shots are an interesting alternative take which can coexist with the original, while Lucas has gone to great lengths to try to ensure the originals do not coexist with the Special Editions.

Exactly. I never understand it when people come out with the “Why is it okay for you to do this but not George?”

It is okay for George to do it. Always has been. I have no issue with the existence of the SE’s. I take issue with the suppression of the original (and intermediate) releases in favor of the current version.

Wow! Man that looks nice. Quick question though, what program are you using to accomplish this work. Also, I would be interested in knowing some of the technical aspects of your planet creation as well.

Ships animations are done in Blender (cycles engine). Planets are created from the combination of several NASA/Google Earth images in Photoshop. So they are basically 2D objects. At the end I mix it all in After Effects, apply some filters to make it look more like a movie and that’s it.

FXitinPost has just released his SC.38 “fanfilm”/remake of the Vader/Obiwan duel from A New Hope and it’s pretty awesome. Some shots look a little funny, but with a little editing, I think it would be a great addition to this “remaster” of yours. Check it out:

(just a shame Vader has the wrong gloves on. So much work done and such a simple detail overlooked… sucks, but it’s still pretty awesome to see the new shots and choreography)

Too bad it also uses the low quality special edition as a source.

I like it but i have a little disappointment, because they didn’t do a color grading in the first scene and the escape scene to match the new fight scene ,but i understand why he didn’t do that. I felt sad in this part too 2:01.

2:01 is a shot i could live without. With a little editing (which i plan to do), I think this can be much better! 😃

I would cut this scene if i’m gonna make a fan edit of a whole saga too.

I don’t know about this, some of it feels like it could fit, but most of it feels off

Finally! I though it won’t be ever released 😄 I think it’s really good, even though I was expecting something better, given the massive delays. However, it would be ridiculous if I put this in my edit, because it obviously didn’t match rest of the movie in terms of camera movement, lens, music, special effects, and many other stuff. SC 38 is great as a stand-alone production.

I do agree that it is an entertaining standalone item, but for putting into any edit? I don’t think that can work … doesn’t match on camera movements, colors, quality, etc. I feel bad saying this since I know it obviously took a lot of time and work to do but … I was expecting something a bit better in terms of consistency. But, from the previews I knew that wasn’t going to be the case, especially with some of those odd choice camera angles.

It’s a neat idea, but it looked downright absurd. I don’t buy for one second that I’m seeing an old Alec Guinness sword fighting. And as others have said, it doesn’t match the look of the film at all. Glad you’re not including it. Anyway, love what you’ve done so far, I look forward to seeing more. It’s interesting to see what Star Wars would look like had it been made today.

Any chance you’ll just release the Blu Ray cut with your color grading?
