Info Wanted: Searching for the best quality A New Hope source for fan-edit.

Hi guys/gals! I don’t know much about these fan-preservations so I’m gonna need some help. I’m working on ‘Star Wars: A New Hope - Remastered’ (kind of like Adywan’s Revisited) and I was going to use the Blu-ray version as a basis, but unfortunately it’s really hard to color grade this 8-bit piece of shit. Then I thought about this 4k77 thing but while it’s superior in colors, it has even less details in shadows, not to mention sharpeness and grain. Is there any other version I can use?

You could try the DEED.

Despecialized Edition is the color-corrected Blu-ray release.

Neverargreat’s version is an edit of the Blu-Ray release, with far better colors and details recovered in white areas whiwh are blown out in the official release. It’s as sharp as the Blu-Ray. Could it be your go-to version ?

On the 4k77 side, there’s a DNR version. There’s also the “Skymaster edition”, soon to be released.

No it’s not, it’s the 35mm prints made 720P by using the Blu Ray.

What? No, it isnt. Please stop giving false information as fact. It’s the Blu-Ray color corrected with the SE changes removed through a variety of sources, only one of which is scans of 35mm prints. SW DEED has the least amount of 35mm material out of the whole DEED trilogy anyway. Hell, that’s why it’s only 720p - because Harmy didn’t have enough high-resolution material to seamlessly remove the SE editions at 1080p.

I don’t even know what “35mm prints made 720p using the Blu-Ray” means. Why would you use the Blu-Ray at all if you had 35mm source material? Okay, maybe if you had incomplete 35mm scans, but then why would you downgrade it to 720p if you have 35mm scans and a 1080p Blu-Ray?

I didn’t know, I’m not stating facts only telling what I know which is not a lot apparently.

Edited Blu-ray is still blu-ray. I will do the color grading on my own, I just need a better source.
DNR in 4k77 solves only grain problem. And about Skymaster Edition… I can’t find information about it anywhere.

All info about the SkyMaster Edition is on the 4K77 forums. It’s not done yet, but it’s supposed to be within a month or two. Looks fantastic - basically a different 4K77 DNR by Skydude that has a lot more cleanup, color, and DNR work than the “main” 4K77.

I think a good color reference would be NeverarGreat’s Technicolor version, which looks best in my opinion color-wise since it has that very vibrant look that the Blu-ray lacks.

However I suggest using 4k77 DNR or the “Skymaster” esition, as many others here mentioned.

Neverar’s is by far the best version available for picture quality and colour.

You could then use the 4k77 DNR version to replace SE shots.

Oh gosh, this Skymaster Edition is awesome! If he will release it anytime soon I will definitely use it 😃

There’s also 4K83 DNR v1.1 that’s out now, which uses Skydude’s DNR settings and Sanjuro’s color grade, which is the best I’ve ever seen ROTJ look. But of course, that’s ROTJ…

Despite them being sourced from release prints rather than the negatives, 4K77 and its derivatives I think are the best quality sources for the OT until Lucasfilm comes out with from-scratch native 4K versions themselves. The blu-ray does at times have more detail due to being sourced from the negatives, but the scans themselves are just god-awful even before the 2004 coloring changes.

The Skymaster Edition is definitely the best I’ve ever seen SW/ANH ever look.

I definitely need to track down this 1.1 release. I tested Sanjuro’s v1.4, and while amazing work, the grain kills it for me on my 4K set. I definitely need DNR for my situation.

I was talking about ROTJ (4K83). The original Star Wars/ANH (4K77) does not have a Sanjuro-graded DNR release.

I know you were. The first part of my response was a comment on that. My second part about v1.4 was simply a recent example of No-DNR I just experienced, to illustrate why I was eager to find a DNR version of Jedi.

Oh, sorry, I misread your post!

No worries. 😃

I actually tested the DNR Jedi 1.1 yesterday. Still prefer Harmy’s work. Must be something about these scans on a bright 4K TV from not horribly far away. Everything’s muted, the smoothed out grain still “moves”, etc. The resolution is there but is marred by age and dealing with all that grain. I’m sure they look fantastic projected though. 😃

1.2 DNR is far superior to 1.1 with better DNR, sharpening and a new color grade. 1.1 is kinda redundant now.

Sorry, I was referring to 1.1 in 4K. I don’t see 1.2 out in 4K as of yet. I’ll try that out as well. You never know.

The 4K version of Jedi DNR 1.2 is still encoding (it’s already been encoding for a week!), looks like it is projected to be done sometime this weekend.
