UPDATE: This project is not going to be finished. I may occasionally release some new VFX or color grading just for fun.

GOALS:

  • Complete color grade using ‘SkyMaster’s 4k77 upscale’
  • Replace bad-looking special effects with realistic, Rogue One-like CGI
  • Remaster music and sound effects

The color grading looks nice and I love the new Falcon shot! Consider me interested.

I personally think using 4K77 would be a better source to work off in terms of the color, it seems there’s less color noise and banding. The Lowry master was done at only 8 bit, and I know 4k77 was done at something higher than that.

You’ve probably seen Star Wars Revisited by Adywan, but have you seen Aggelw’s work? He’s been working on a theoretical edit for many years now and is working to heavily modernize the film. Might be some good inspiration there.

All in all, I’d love to see something that fits better with the visuals of Rogue One.

Why not just splice in your color-corrected clips from the Blu-Ray version with Harmy’s Despecialized Edition?

The color grading is cool and I think that it would take a lot of time and effort to do a ton of CGI so best of luck to you. The 4k77 source might be your best bet if you can get your hands on it.

I’d love to see some VFX shots redone - I remember there was a guy on devientart who was remaking every FX shot and they were really cool, but it’s been years and I’ve yet to see an actual edit from him - so i’d love to check this out as it progresses.

I like the CGI, but an interesting option would be to recomposite the effects.

It’s time consuming, but you can mask each element in separate, and them apply some filters. For example, you can add some bloom to those star destroyer lights, engines, etc. Create some depth of field, add shadows, etc.

So for the falcon departure, I’d try to keep the original model, but change or improve the planet.
For Tattoine I’ve seen great photos of the actual filming locations, taken from similar angles, so again perhaps you could use those to reassemble some effect shots.

Getting the CGI anywhere close to the level of the original models might even take longer.
Once I tried to better Star Trek TMP’s Enterprise… well it started to look similar with about 12 lights… and 2 hours to render a frame… But it never looked better!

Anyway, good luck!

Oh guys, thank you all for your comments!

  1. @emanswfan - I’m a huge fan of Adywan’s work and I’m mainly inspired by his TESB Revisited. I just saw Aggelw project and while it looks amazing (CGI is great!) I don’t want to change that much, especially the aesthetics of the movie.
  2. @Hal 2000 - I don’t have any ideas yet, but something similar to Hosnian Prime destruction would be nice.
  3. @4throck - I’m going to do so. Some of the original effects still holds up so it would be pointless to replace it with CGI.

And by the way, here’s the shot from the same sequence (composition might change yet)

I don’t like the Phantom Menace Tatooine back there, but that might be just me.

What program are you using for these renders, by the way?

That shot looks just like something out of Rogue One, nice job!

I also watched your color grading for the beginning of the Battle of Yavin and it also looks similar to RO.

The very first shot from Star Wars: A New Hope - Remastered 😃 As you can see I’m gonna use some original models while enhancing them a bit.

That shot definitely has a modernized vibe without sacrificing the practical effects! Pretty cool!

How would say your Remastered will differ from Adywan’s Revisited? Just different personal interpretations? I know you mentioned earlier that you don’t want to change that much, but you will be updating the special effects. I guess I’m curious in more of the changes/ideas you have for your edit.

Anyway, really liking the look!

Simply amazing.
Please, consider releasing it as a full edit sooner or later…

Wow your cgi looks good, kinda reminds me of aggelw, his idea is kinda like this too, i didnt like his idea of making tantive red and i think this could be an alternative version of it.You should revamp the prequel trilogy too.

Can you show your list of changes here? Because i’m curious of what you do in the battle of yavin, if you either add more star fighters and tie fighters in the battle because i didn’t like the excuse of it in the novel.

That’s exactly who i was talking about earlier in the thread - that dude has some cool stuff, but never released anything, right?? This project shows a lot of promise in the same realm. Looking forward to seeing more!

Yes, that’s it!
No objections at all to this, it looks as its should: simple and beautiful!
