Idea & Info: The VHS Awakens (The Force Awakens VHS emulation)

Not too long ago, I purchased Red Giant Universe, which is a collection of filters for Adobe Premiere Pro. One of those filters is simply called VHS. https://www.redgiant.com/products/universe/vhs
It’s a filter meant to emulate the VHS look. So I decided to try it out on Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens and well, here’s a five-minute sample: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1iZxmO5lT5Z_R1Y57WrU1rI2lGrbmE-YP

So, what’s your opinion?

Could be worthwhile to track down this as a reference point (and perhaps for a preservation.) 😃

A CBS/FOX Laserdisc version would be the 4:3 ratio without the VHS effect.

I would tone down the horizontal line artifacts. That’s not really an inherent part of the VHS experience, as long as your tape isn’t damaged.

If I had some gum, I’d chew a hole into the sun…

Don’t even get me started, I’ve been emailing Detla continously for 3-4 years now, since I learned about the existance of this copy. All they can say is that they don’t know, that they no longer use VHS tapes, or other generic responses… The tapes are certainly decomissiones (since they are expired) and most likely destroyed. Even the Delta preservation museum doen’t have them.

Spotted pie up their final tract of digestive system, I’m bought industrial JVS VHS duplicator and I will be making my own copies, if anyone’s interested.

Of what and from where?

Can you give more information about this? I’m certainly curious.

From the photo, it appears to be letterboxed (probably cropped a little too) rather than properly Pan and Scanned. That tape also looks very short, suggesting an SLP/EP recording. Presumably one could create a digital version from the DVD that reproduces this same cropping and then play it, recording the results onto a VHS Tape in EP mode, and then capture that tape back onto your PC…

But… Why? It’s unlikely that the video was edited for content or language so there’s probably nothing unique about it. So whether you are able to make a genuine Delta tape capture or even just a home made VHS replica, it will still just be the worst quality version of this film you’ve ever seen. A novelty sure, but nothing more.

It’s like taking 4K77 and recording that onto VHS and then recapturing it. Sure, you could do it, but why would you? Alright, I’ll admit I have thought about doing that, it would be fun just to skim through it and look at it to see how it compares to the old tapes, but I’d never sit down and watch it all the way through. Well, probably not anyway 😃

It’s a trick of the light and shadow. If you look closely, it’s a full length VHS tape. EP/SLP had such lousy tracking problems playing back on machines other than what it was originally recorded on, I can’t see a company putting out tapes for airlines using it to just save a few pennies on tapes.

Oh yeah, the right side looked almost empty, but you’re right, I can see the tape there now.

I didn’t end up getting that duplicator, but I did start a VHS label, only officially licensed stuff though.
But yeah, once 4K80 is ready, I will be recording all 3 for myself on VHS. And I still have to the transfer of the Executor Box-set as promised years ago on another therad…
