Star Wars trilogy box sets coming next year? — Page 2

Screen-Rant just reposted an article that uses the debunked interview from Kathy Kennedy.

It would be great to have a nine film box set of all three trilogies. The unfortunate truth is that the unaltered versions of the original trilogy will never be released (most likely something George Lucas made clear when selling his property to Disney in the contract). It would be nice is Lucasfilm color corrected the Special Editions to remove the color timing issues that were introduced in the original 2004 DVD release.

We don’t know for sure whether it’s true or not.

This interview confirms that Lucasfilm is not releasing the unaltered trilogy.

This fucking interview again?

That’s not what she said. He asked the question in a weird way and she interpreted it (after several attempts at answering something completely different) as him asking if they were going to further alter the SE’s, which they’re not.

Language please?

And that interview should be enshrined forever as how not to ask a important question. 😉

Kathleen Kennedy is explaining that the original trilogy are George Lucas’ films. George has said that the unaltered versions are not the films he intended on making, and saying that the Special Editions are his final cuts. I also agree that George keeps changing his mind on what he contends to be his final versions, but he has made it clear. Kennedy is respecting Lucas by not tampering with his original films, whether that be releasing the original versions. Now that George Lucas is no longer part of the franchise, there will be no more alterations made to the trilogy. As much as it disappoints me, the Special Editions are canon, and the unaltered trilogy will remain in the vault.

But don’t be too upset, we still have the Despecialized Editions. This is one of the sole reasons why Harmy created them.

That exact interview has been discussed on this site ad nauseum for two years now. She’s not saying anything about the original versions. She’s saying they won’t make any more changes to the first six films because that’s the way he worded his question. That’s all.

I’m not saying we will ever get official unaltered original releases (that seems very unlikely in the near future, if at all), but that interview is not evidence of that in any way.

For the last time NO it doesn’t!

George is not part of the equation in any form. Plus this interview basically confirms it’s Disney’s decision at this point. George is not the issue.

What Disney business executive would be crazy enough to agree to that deal?

I wonder if the 3D versions of the prequel movies will be included, or as separate releases? (Or at all, I saw TPM in 3D and it looked pretty bad aside from the pod race)

As some of the last batch of changes to the films were for the 3D releases, technically we did get them, from a certain point of view. 😉

Disney has all but abandoned 3D releases in the U.S. Only Marvel seems to be bucking that trend though.

To me, the attempt at re-releasing the films in 3D (only Phantom Menace was re-released in 3D) and Star Wars Kinect were the two last embarrassments from Star Wars before George Lucas sold Lucasfilm to Disney later that same year in 2012.

Yes that’s right, they have CG Yoda for consistency’s sake (a change I don’t hate but definitely isn’t necessary), and updated “force speed” effects if I remember (among other things). But I’m talking more of the 3D itself, which aside from the pod race and space scenes looked more like a shoebox diorama than anything.

Also I read somewhere the 3D versions of Clones and Sith were completed and screened. But unlike Phantom Menace which was advertised and hyped up, the latter 2 prequels were screened like one time each at one theater and then quickly forgotten about.

IIRC, they were only shown at Celebration. A couple other shots were slightly altered, like a view of the Trade Federation ships over Naboo.

The OT has yet to be screened, if their conversions were finished at all. Some of the changes seen on Blu-Ray, (like all the new gizmos popping out of Artoo when he’s shot in ROTJ) were apparently to enhance the 3D effect.

What Disney business executive would be crazy enough to agree to that deal?

Executive who is going to make billions out of Star Wars in a world where the original cuts don’t interest much people ?
Executive who is buying every single franchise ?
Executive who is burying most of new content to keep audiences in a nostalgia trend ad vitam aeternam ?

…Disney executive in a nutshell…

At this point I’d just be happy for transfers that don’t look like absolute shit. ROTS is the only one of the 6 that looks correct on the current blu-rays.

I’m assuming it’ll be new versions tho, because Disney+ is going to stream at 4K HDR with select devices, and it would make sense for them to have 4K HDR versions of all 6 films.

The question is, if a 4k set is indeed coming next year, do they put the new 4k transfers on Disney+ right at launch in November, or do they wait to unveil them until closer to the physical release in the spring?
