I am awaiting a rip of the UMD, the person who has it says the psp video on Youtube has been zoomed in by the PSP itself and that the actual disc itself is Open Matte. I will confirm once I receive it, although I am still sceptical until I’ve seen it with my own eyes.

I got hold of the UMD rip and can confirm as I initially thought it is cropped like my ITV capture:

As far as the Daniel Craig movies go, looks like there isn’t an open matte version publicly available for Casino Royale or Spectre.

We know there are open mattes of Quantum of Solace and Skyfall out there somewhere and hopefully someday we’ll be able to see them. I’ve been asking people who say they have them but so far I haven’t had any luck in getting a response.

Trust me, both QOS and Skyfall Open Matte do exist in various guises, here are mine:

QOS OM ITV capture:

Skyfall OM S*y capture:

There are other versions out there if you look.

I compared The CBSFOX Laserdisc of Live and Let Die against the current Blu Ray and the LD has squeezed the titles to 4:3 as well as the opening gunbarrel. The rest of the movie is pan and scan and a pretty poor transfer to boot unfortunately.

Finished editing the commercials out of the Syfy broadcast of Skyfall. Turns out the movie is cut more than I had expected (14 minutes!) but it is in open matte. Used a simple opacity filter to show the comparison between the blu-ray and the open matte version.

Found my old Live and Let Die TBS broadcast from 1991. It appears to be a mix of Open Matte and Pan and Scan. Here’s a few comparison shots. (the 1.78:1 blu ray is the Blue rectangle) Some of the movie has more info on top and bottom. Some of it (shown in the 4th screenshot) is just pan and scan: lald lald
lald lald
There’s also several spots were you can see the literal top of the frame/matte
Looks like a 1.66:1 version of either movies would be the most “open” release

Also like my laserdiscs, shoot me a pm if you want an MP4 of the broadcast

Years ago I randomly downloaded a file named “Casino Royale [480x272 h.264 PSP][SCV Quality]”
Just taken a look and its in Scope unfortunately.

I will have to track down some of these HDTV versions but it would be really sweet if they released the IMAX versions for Skyfall and Spectre.

SilverWook said:

Casino Royale is indeed 16:9 open matte on PSP. Someone at FE has ripped the disc before and synced it to the Blu-Ray soundtrack. Sony UMD discs use a proprietary sound codec that won’t work outside of a PSP, but all the movies are merely stereo anyway.

Only the prologue of Casino Royale (2006) is open matte from what I remember, in the PSP UMD video. The rest of the runtime is all pan & scan.

Only a couple of very short shots are Open Matte even in the first sequence of the PSP UMD disc and hdtv, the rest is cropped like the rest of the movie. I have both.

Crazy they would go to all that extra hassle to crop it.

Getting a dvd of Golden Gun soon that is supposedly 1.66:1. Will check it to see if it’s more open than the Laserdisc or Blu Ray

I got one from overseas that was 1.77:1. I can share it too. But this one is the R1 special edition from 2002 (not the 2000 release), which is listed on many sites as being 1.66:1, including Amazon and eBay.

The French DVD is 1.77:1. Checking it now. Slightly more info on top and bottom. The opening title sequence is windowboxed in 1:66.1.

Hmmm This 1.77:1 might actually be a stretched 1.66:1 image. Once I get the new dvd, I will post some comparison screenshots.
