What can a scientist in my Star Wars fan fic be working on?

Im trying to write an RPG profile about a scientist who is working on something in the era of the New Republic. He does not believe in the Force in the way he doesn’t think it controls fate. (He acknowledges, however, that their is an energy field that some sentients can manipulate) I just need something for him to be researching. It really isn’t that important to the story; it just has to sound cool and scientific. It can NOT be game-changing or something that can alter the story in a dramatic way Also it can’t have already been done in Legends or Canon. I want a fresh idea.

It cannot be

  • A time machine

-A teleporter

-A matter replicator

-A singularity Weapon

  • Any type of droid

-Anything to do with holograms

-A food synthesizer

  • Anything to do with the Force or Midi-chlorians

  • A shrink ray

-A freeze ray

-pico and femtotechnology

-A Dyson sphere or any type of megastructure.

-Liquid metal armor or a nano morph

-Any improvements on the hyperdrive

-Limb regeneration

-Hyperspace nullifier

-Holodeck

  • Knowledge Transfer (Instant learning like in the Matrix)

-Philosophers Stone

-Kinetic weapons

-Solar sail

-Anything to do with kyber crystals

-Gene editing

-Mech suit

-Exosuit

-Gender change

In canon, during the Empire, scientists were researching methods to control droids, lasers that can punch through deflector shields and ship scale disintigrators. These ideas are therefore taken.
My scientist is called upon by the New Republic to investigate why the supermassive black hole is more active than usual and sucking in things from a further range. I just need something for the scientist to be studying before he is called away. It has to sound fresh and cool.
I’m looking not for a gadget or piece of tech. I’ve decided everything technological that we can think of, can be done. Speeders with deflector shields? Sure. We haven’t seen them but they can easily be done. I’m looking for something that would still be an emerging field of science. Something a Type II/III civilization would do next. Any ideas?

Physiological effects of hyperspace travel in confined spaces.

If he is being called to study a (the?) super massive black hole (which normally would be the very big one at the center of any galaxy), then I’d imagine he is somewhat of an expert in astronomical anomalies, maybe black holes, wormholes and hyperspace in particular. Here are a few ideas:

Maybe he is with a research team trying to study the effects of living in hyperspace for prolonged periods of time (setting the groundwork for an eventual extragalactic expedition, possibly).

He could be partnered with some xenobiologists who are following a herd of purgils and trying to understand how they can detect safe hyperspace routes.

Maybe he is sitting on a research station near the Unknown Regions trying to either A) detect the gravitational signs of black holes to help chart those regions, or B) he is trying to find predictive patterns in wormholes that randomly appear and disappear in the Unknown Regions, which make that area of space so hard to travel in.

I know you said no tech, but maybe he could be part of a team trying to develop a ship or station that can produce a concentrated anti-gravity field. The purpose being that it could help temporarily negate mass shadows of large interstellar objects and allow for ships to make shortcuts along various hyperspace routes. It’s basically like a reverse Interdictor in its function. It could be extremely useful for the military, who might want to sneak ships around enemy lines. The ship he is working on could actually be a modified Interdictor cruiser that the Republic acquired from the old Empire. Maybe they are still trying to figure out the kinks, so it wouldn’t be a game changer because it still really isn’t stable or reliable yet.

I really like the prolonged living in hyperspace study. What would be a negative side effect of living in hyperspace and what could I call this syndrome? In Legends, they have something called Hyper-Rapture which is going insane by looking out at hyperspace too much but that’s just looking not prolonged travel.

I’m looking for something highly advanced

Ok my scientist is studying sub-Hyperspace, the dimension in which quintessence can be turned into Phantom Energy and then travel to destroy star systems in real time. This is how Starkiller Base fires it’s weapon after draining a sun. (I’m sure Disney will explore it more in due time). However, in the mean time; I wonder what other things my scientist can study about it. Applications I’ve considered would be a sub-hyperdrive which would allow for instantaneous travel like Star Trek: Discovery’s Spore Drive. It also could be used for instant communications. Good stuff but too much of a gamechanger to tinker with. What else could my scientist be studying about sub-hyperspace?

track ships in hyperspace as TLJ and R0 does? but come out of hyperspace more near to ships and planets than before?

I want to make a roleplay where the canon New Republic is working on a top secret science project analogous to the First Order creating Starkiller Base. It can’t be something already depicted in Legends or Canon; so I don’t want it to be teleportation, mind uploading, time travel, matter replicators, anything to do with the Force (unless it isn’t blasphemous) or any other super-common sci-fi trope.

Does anybody have any good ideas?

A bit unrelated but I think you’ll enjoy this science Star Wars documentary.

“Heroes come in all sizes, and you don’t have to be a giant hero. You can be a very small hero. It’s just as important to understand that accepting self-responsibility for the things you do, having good manners, caring about other people - these are heroic acts. Everybody has the choice of being a hero or not being a hero every day of their lives.” - George Lucas
