Windows 10 & impending end to Win7

I just wanted to see what member’s thoughts are on Windows 10 these days. I really want to keep using Windows 7 even after end of support early next year if it’s not a bad idea. This is unless, of course, Windows 10 is actually a good upgrade from Windows 7.

I don’t use Windows a ton, but I find Windows 10 no more frustrating than 7. 😛
Windows 8 is a different story…

The worst part about 10 relative to 7 for me is that they discontinued the classic UI. But the default in 10 is a huge improvement over Aero, so it’s not that big of a deal.

I would put this in my sig if I weren’t so lazy.

To me it’s the exact opposite. But I do like the dark theme option on everything new, that’s the one I use. Other than that, I prefer Win7. It’s more PC than tablet and I miss that.

Apparently you can make WIN10 have the classic UI using ‘OpenShell’ software which used to be called ‘Classic Shell’.

I used to use windows back in the xp days and prior, then I installed 7, suddenly external hard drives quit being recogized, the modem driver wouldn’t work and it crashed to no end, since then I haven’t had any reason to use anything more than linux mint.

I jumped from 7 to 10 on my work laptop 6 months ago or so, and it is an improvement. There are a few UI changes that bug me as others mentioned, but unlike win 8 and early vesrions of 10, you can setup most things i a sane way now (start menu related, etc) so it is quite nice to use. and built-in ssh is a plus 😃

I have had pop-ups from Microsoft informing me of end of support for Windows 7 in January 2020. But I think I will carry on using Windows 7.
My machine is old and not capable of running 10, but is still good machine, and like some people still use Microsoft’s XP or Vista, I will still use Windows 7. It is not bad operating system, just Microsoft want eveyone using the same newer system. 😦

My main computer is Win 7, and I don’t plan to leave any time soon.
The second computer is dual boot with Win 10 and Ubuntu. Disclosure: it is low RAM.
The Ubuntu works flawlessly and I have had few issues with the distro I use.
Any time I have to use the Win 10 side, it’s a real resource hog.
I disabled Cortana, blocked Edge, did a few other tweaks.
Usually I let it run 15", until the CPU settles down, then it’s OK enough.
My wife runs Slax (Linux) on her unit.

My venerable Sony VAIO laptop is just a noisy fan, overheating, prematurely shutting down mess and can’t run 10 anyway. (In spite of Microsoft’s frequent attempts to install 10 behind my back.) It’s been a pain in the asteroid finding a new PC since everything that can be used for a home office is pretty much sold out now, and I can ill afford to drop 1K on a gaming laptop at the moment.

I have a less than three year old HP laptop I use for writing and light web use when traveling that can’t install the latest bloated 10 updates. A 32gb hard drive doesn’t cut it anymore and this model can’t be expanded.

I was able to get a Trekstor Primebook within my budget. While I’m not 100% thrilled with it, (minor flaw in the extreme upper corner edge of the LCD display and eccentric touchpad) it’s amazingly free of pre-installed crap I’ll never use. The other saving grace is an expansion port for another SSD as 10 gobbed up all but 30gb of a 64gb drive.

As said above, there are ways to make 10 a little bit like 7. This S mode crap might as well be ransomware though.

I hate the mandatory updates. I’m still running Windows 8.1 with Classic Shell.

And professional versions of 7 will probably be supported for years. I was surprised to see my dentist still uses XP in their office. It’s the pro version. It’s us poor consumers who get these upgrades pushed on us.

How did you do that? I thought they made it impervious.

I did that last December when my Win 7 (than Vista) and my wife’s Slax (then XP) both crashed.
I believe I tweaked the registry of the Win 10 (I do not recommend anyone messing about in their registry).
With Edge, I downed a program that snuffs it every time it launches.
To be honest, the Win 10 is on a dual boot, that runs Ubuntu 99% of the time.

I was unaware that Win 7 Pro was still being updated.
That bears investigation.

Look’s like you didn’t read the OP.

I was basing my statement on what the nice lady who cleans my teeth had to say about XP still being used in the dentist’s office. It seems weird that 7 would just be tossed under the bus when it’s younger than XP.

XP is not being supported and anyone who uses it today has terrible security risks. They had better update that system.

Win 7 still receives a monthly Malicious Software Removal tool.
While it remains stable, I am careful browsing with it.
Important files are backed up weekly.
With Win 10, I have been informed my system cannot “upgrade” to Win 11.
That is dual boot, and I switched from Peppermint to Linuxmint this winter.
Has anyone moved to Win 11? Thoughts?
Win 10 end of support is two years away - 2025.

I built my PC with Windows 10, and it had 11 compatibility, so I upgraded it. My general impression is that it isn’t a huge leap. Most of what’s changed are that the boot up screen has fancier animation now, which isn’t saying a whole lot. It’s 10 with prettier effects.

I have altered Lucas’ visions. Pray I don’t alter them any further.
