i get more excited about what could happen than about what I know will happen, which is your ultimate point, that it probably can't help but be something that hurts star wars more than it helps it. i'm in favor of ending the canon now too; hell, i wish they'd never written a word of the EU, even though I've read plenty of it. to me, star wars is modern myth, and if you add stories about random folk to expand the "universe," you just reduce the scope of the central story. it was never meant to be an ongoing episodic story; it was just the one story (well, now the two stories). unlike star trek, which IS episodic, and so reading a bazillion books makes sense.
at least we don't have to watch it if we don't want to...though i probably wil, at least once, just to make sure it's as bad as I suspect it will be.
