Old Trailers...

After convincing my father to purchase the DVDs last night, I sat down and watched some of the "Bonus Material" disc while doing my homework.

Watching the trailers I noticed two things: Trailers back then were really cheezey, and...

In the trailers for Revenge of the Jedi and Return of the Jedi, Luke's blade on Jabba's sail barge is blue.
Why is that? was it that way in the TE of the movie, or was it just early shots that were changed before the release?

The original, first STAR WARS trailer is the worse trailer I've ever seen, they had the worse parts on it. Audiences used to laugh at the trailer.

By every trailer before the 80s was cheesy and badly-edited.
“Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.” — Nazi Reich Marshal Hermann Goering

In the VH-1 "When Star Wars Ruled the World" special, I can't remember if it was Mark Hamill or Carrie Fisher who said they snuck into a movie that was going to be the first showing the SW trailer back in late '76 or early '77 and when the announcer says "coming this summer to a galaxy near you" (or whatever the original line was), someone in the audience chimed in "and coming to a late night TV broadcast very soon after that."

Funny stuff.

And yes, old trailers are very cheesy. Check out the trailers on the Young Frankenstein DVD. Yikes.
"You fell victim to one of the classic blunders, the most famous of which is 'Never get involved in a land war in Asia'."

Cool, that was the first GL basher ever! 28 years ago!

The most cheesy one is the trailer for "The French Connection", it's almost scary to watch. Yet, not every 70s trailer is cheesy and badly edited, check out the original trailer for "Monty Python and the Holy Grail", it's waaaay ahead of its time! Narrated in chinese, nicely edited, featuring a non-sense chinese restaurant ad at the end... The trailer for "A Clockwork Orange" is also great, I've never seen anything like it, and it was also from the early 70s.

I saw that. It is funny when cynics eat their words.
