Yeah, I get what you're saying too, and I actually had a tingle of excitement when you suggested a matinee feel to it. I could envision it being even better than the movies... a multi-chapter (in double or even triple digits) telling a huge, grandiose story. But then I came back down from the clouds thinking that it could never be done effectively... like you said, it probably won't be carried in that direction. And I still think the story is key, as are the characters. A lot of people's complaints about the prequels is that its characters aren't as memorable and endearing as the characters of the originals... and they had characters that were directly linked to and even were some of the same characters as had been in the originals. I feel that a TV series would just be a further departure and would only exist to cash in on the name Star Wars a little longer. I hope I'm wrong, and I'm still getting tingles thinking about that Saturday matinee cliffhanger serial style.

But Hollywood today just doesn't understand the old adage, "Leave 'em beggin' for more!" They exist more for, "Keep feedin' it to them until they throw up and refuse to eat it anymore." I, for the most part, simply think that the canon of Star Wars should just stop now. I might be swayed if the TV series is any good... however, I wouldn't be surprised if a TV series chronology set in between the two trilogies might cause George to go back in and edit the original movies even more. Yeah, it sounds ridiculous, but I wouldn't put it past him to gratuitously stick a popular TV character in the background at the Mos Eisley cantina or a new ending celebration at ROTJ. It wouldn't be the first time... think of the connection between Clone Wars and Revenge of the Sith. That gives me the shivers... something very different from the tingles. ^_^
