Idea: Goldfinger - Theatrical UK version

I want to do some sort of restoration/preservation of this version of the movie. There are 3 main differences that are not in any release version (that I know of) that would be easy to put in:

-The timer on the bomb in Fort Knox stopping at 003 seconds as opposed to 007. This explains Bond saying “3 more ticks and Goldfinger would have hit the jackpot!”

-When the plane is out of control going down, there is only one green dot going down on the radar Felix is looking at as opposed to 2 in the general release (implying Bond and Pussy escaped with a parachute )

-The end credits erroneously say “James Bond will be back On Her Majesty’s Secret Service,” this was changed to Thunderball for the general release since Thunderball actually followed it.

Does anyone know if an official home video release has any of these original scenes? I have the oldest Laserdisc release and it doesn’t have these original scenes. I know the end credits saying OHMSS is on a tv print floating around the internet, but the other 2 I don’t know.

Interesting! Goldfinger is among my favourite Bond’s and films in general. 😃

What’s your source for the information on the UK version?

Yeah that’s been on the bay for a while now - $200+ for 33 seconds of footage! I keep waiting for the price to drop, but he seems to think that’s what it’s worth, and maybe it is, but I can’t afford it either.

Well, the OHMSS one is the only one that ever appeared in any release versions. It was quickly recalled and replaced with the Thunderball credit. It is unknown how many prints were released with OHMSS listed or if it was only the premiere engagements.

IMDB is not an accurate source to use as it is frequently full of user posts that merely repeat urban legends etc. No version I know of ever had 003 seconds shown as it was Harry Saltzman who insisted they need to go back during editing a replace it with the insert of the counter reading 007. It was so late in the game there was no time to adjust Bond’s line about the three more ticks.

I have never heard of the blip of Bond and Pussy escaping the plane being missing. The shot and music cue is timed to show that blip of escape at exactly the last second. The only difference I might expect is in the end credits akin to Thunderball where some versions might have Barry’s ending music instead of the title song. (TB has Barry’s Mr. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang in a custom instrumental in the regular mono and in the remix with alternate dialogue there is the JB theme slapped on.) Of course this is merely me speculating as I think they had early on decided to drop Barry’s end cue for a reprise of the title song.

I recall seeing this on TV decades ago and it ending in OHMSS. Could be wrong though.

Could it have been HBO in 1980?

Wow! 😮

I love this site, every day is a revelation and education on my favourite films. Is there no way that we could create this version ourselves through dabbling with visual effects and motion graphics software?

That footage ought to scanned and preserved if possible. There must be enough Bond fans around here (and elsewhere) who could chip in and buy it?

The 3 second ending has already been “recreated” on youtube.

I’d be interested in chipping in, the trouble is finding enough people willing to do the same. Would it be overkill to scan this in 4K, or would 2K be the upper limit on 16mm film like this?

I will ask elsewhere and see who’s willing.

So apparently early release prints did make it out with the 003 seconds. The last poster mentions his IB tech dated December ‘64 has 003 seconds.

I never knew this was on release prints. You learn something new every day. So apparently we just need to look for either UK orignal prints or very early 1964 prints. All 1964 prints should be UK ones anyway because the US release date wasn’t until 1965.

That’s great news because I would prefer a scan of a complete print instead of just a few clips. I’ll try to keep an eye out for one on eBay but if someone sees it first don’t hesitate to PM me, I’ll be ready to contribute.

I’d definitely contribute towards a complete scan of that print as well.

Has anyone been able to make a scan with the original 003 footage since this thread was last updated?

Just starting reading through this thread and saw someone linked a video I had made years ago haha. But I too am interested in these little changes in the original film (hence me making that video in the first place) :p
