Star Wars TV update...this is an article from IGN.com, add this to your growing list of disappointments.

July 28, 2005 - If a producer announced a new television series in 2005, you'd expect to see progress on it by 2006, or '07 at the latest, right? Unfortunately, not so with the two Star Wars television series that fans have been promised.

According to Can Mag, at least one of the two shows, the much-anticipated live action series, won't go into production until at least 2008. It seems that George Lucas intends to do much of the writing and directing work himself, but his calendar is full for the next few years with the planned 3-D versions of the Star Wars movies as well as the long-awaited new Indiana Jones movie. After that, he'll start working on the new live-action Star Wars television.

At this point, it looks like it will be another three or four years before we find out what Lucas's vision of the post-prequel era is. This delay may or may not apply to the computer-animated series that deals with the Clone Wars. Perhaps if that comes out in the next two years, it will keep the fans happy.

Keep your browser set to IGN FilmForce for the latest on the Star Wars TV series and other news from a galaxy far, far away.

So much for "After finishing Episode 3, it'll be no more StarWars for me."
Even though it does rhyme, it does seem to have turned out to be untrue.

yeah...no kidding ric. the only sense right now that the SW series is a "disappointment" is that lucas insists on doing all the work himself, thereby dooming us to more hackneyed and poorly-told stories that shit all over the OT.

Well, at least that will give me a few more years of semi-tranquility before they milk the franchise further and introduce more things that will just screw it up. Yikes, if you're dead set on making a TV series, George, you could have at least passed it on to someone else!

Actually that's not quite right
Again, over at Hyperspace celebration 3 web doc thingy, someone asked a question about the live tv show. Lucas' reply was, that like Young Indy, he wants the whole season script written out first, give it a jump start, then leave it to others to finnish it off.

But IMO Sith was great, so Lucas isn't all that bad. Also I thought Young Indy was a boring pile of crap, so a TV SW is not a 'woo hoo' in my books at the moment.

Let I remind you that the SW TV show will probably have no pilot or audience testing, as no network would refuse to air it no matter how awful it is. I mean, the first episode will probably break all records of viewers. So be prepared for some crapy written and acted TV show filled with made-for-TV fake CGI scenes.

Didn't Ian McDiarmid say that he was quite interested in the show and might appear in a few cameos as the Emperor??

If thats true, its not all doom and gloom! that will be worth watching. I wonder in about 2008/2009 or whenever the O.T will be released again with new scenes added in, to fit in with the T.V series?

I don't know why George thinks he can do everything by himself when that has hardly ever worked. I think it's time to fire all of George's yes men and get back to the way it was......

Mr. Lucas step away from the three ring binder and put down your number 2 pencil

Lucas
What?

You're under arrest for the murder of Star Wars. You have the right to remain silent. Any wooden dialogue you write can and will be used against you in a court of law.

Lucas
Oh man!
George Lucas was seduced by the dark side. The OOT ceased to exist in his mind and became the Special Editions...." "They're more maching now than movies. Twisted and evil."

Well, I thought I would add that nothing has been "confirmed" on this whole issue. The source arrived from that website and everyone else has just been repeated and reposting what they read from that. There is no more star wars news these days after the coming and going of revenge of the sith and I think everyone is just trying to come up with some news, ANY news just fill in some star wars junk. So therefore, we really don't know for sure if Lucas will direct the series, if it has been post-poned for soo long, who will be in it, or what the hell the plot is even centered around. Anyway, i'm just saying that getting all upset and pouty now is just self infliction of pain. Now , don't get me wrong, I'm just like the rest of you guys......I think the prequels could have been a different experience all together and I wish we had the O OT on dvd. But I love the fact that star wars will continue on from here, no matter what format. And the way some of you guys refer to Lucas as such a money grubbing star wars murderer...........well i don't even think it merrits a retort, its just ridiculous. But don't flame me for gods sakes, i'm just voicing my opinion as you all are as well.....and I still respect everyones opinion by the way. I'm just saying this tv show could have potential to be something cool, but even if it is you guys are going to hate it anyway because you have had a vengence going for 3 years before it is conceived. Just my thoughts.

Yes, the TV show has the potential to be something good, and I really wish it is, I really do, but with GL in command, who knows what might come out. Yes he might surprise us and deliver an ass-kick show, who knows, maybe his style fits TV better. But when I look back to what he has done, the tendency is for the show to be a lousy, one-seasoned half-assed crap.

the best thing lucas could do with the TV show would be to act as an exec producer along with an incredibly talented and excited show runner/exec producer witih loads of experience. i personally would be partial to any buffy/angel vet as i think those shows set the new standard for immersive, emotional, funny, exciting genre TV, but I'm told the new battlestar kicks mucho ass, so i bet that show will spawn some really talented sci-fi TV people.

hell, what abour ron moore himself? that'd be rocking.

anyway, it'll never happen. but that's my dream. and hey--there has been a fair amount of conflicting info out there about the series so maybe lucas will go this route or something similar. it's not that i don't think he should be involved at all--i just don't think he should be the only one in charge.

I think it's a bad idea because it'll be Star Wars in name only. It'll take place in the same galaxy and follow the same story, but there will be these crappy characters that no one could possibly care about. The expanded universe novels were cool because they continued the adventures of Luke and the others. But does anyone remember that Galaxy of Fear series for children? I own one, but I was never able to read it because all these new people just didn't do it for me at all. One of the only series that has been able to pull that off is Star Trek, but even that has had its share of spinoffs that no one has cared about. Mark my words, this will be considered the Mayberry R.F.D of the Star Wars saga (to be honest, I liked that show, but hardly anyone else does, so it's a good example...).

i get what you're saying, gaffer, but I don't necessarily agree. to me, it's all about the quality of the work and the sense in which lucas or whoever or lucas AND whoever are able to capture the spirit of star wars on a weekly basis.

think about it: star wars was originally envisioned as part movie serial. what current entertainment format imitates the serial format more than any other? a weekly TV series.

it'll never happen, mark my words, but if they can capture that serial feel--the adventure and swashbuckle and sexy excitement of the best Star Wars--every week, i don't care who stars in it, or whose story they tell. to me, star wars is as much about how the story is told as it is about the story itself--something lucas never seemed to understand on the prequels.

Yeah, I get what you're saying too, and I actually had a tingle of excitement when you suggested a matinee feel to it. I could envision it being even better than the movies... a multi-chapter (in double or even triple digits) telling a huge, grandiose story. But then I came back down from the clouds thinking that it could never be done effectively... like you said, it probably won't be carried in that direction. And I still think the story is key, as are the characters. A lot of people's complaints about the prequels is that its characters aren't as memorable and endearing as the characters of the originals... and they had characters that were directly linked to and even were some of the same characters as had been in the originals. I feel that a TV series would just be a further departure and would only exist to cash in on the name Star Wars a little longer. I hope I'm wrong, and I'm still getting tingles thinking about that Saturday matinee cliffhanger serial style.

But Hollywood today just doesn't understand the old adage, "Leave 'em beggin' for more!" They exist more for, "Keep feedin' it to them until they throw up and refuse to eat it anymore." I, for the most part, simply think that the canon of Star Wars should just stop now. I might be swayed if the TV series is any good... however, I wouldn't be surprised if a TV series chronology set in between the two trilogies might cause George to go back in and edit the original movies even more. Yeah, it sounds ridiculous, but I wouldn't put it past him to gratuitously stick a popular TV character in the background at the Mos Eisley cantina or a new ending celebration at ROTJ. It wouldn't be the first time... think of the connection between Clone Wars and Revenge of the Sith. That gives me the shivers... something very different from the tingles. ^_^

naw, i hear ya, i hear ya. loud and clear. i get more excited about what could happen than about what I know will happen, which is your ultimate point, that it probably can't help but be something that hurts star wars more than it helps it.

i'm in favor of ending the canon now too; hell, i wish they'd never written a word of the EU, even though I've read plenty of it. to me, star wars is modern myth, and if you add stories about random folk to expand the "universe," you just reduce the scope of the central story. it was never meant to be an ongoing episodic story; it was just the one story (well, now the two stories). unlike star trek, which IS episodic, and so reading a bazillion books makes sense.

at least we don't have to watch it if we don't want to...though i probably wil, at least once, just to make sure it's as bad as I suspect it will be.
