I assume that now Anchorhead and Silverwook are officially in charge.

Viva Silverwook and Anchorhead! Viva Quebec!

That’s impossible, even for a computer.

Viva the Viva Elite Blu-Ray cases I just ordered to replace my crappy eco cases so my discs and art don’t get ruined when I move!

If Silverwook and Anchorhead are co-captain-ing the site shouldn’t it be “Vive les rois!”? 😉

Anyway, on another note, I have an idea, though it may not be a good one.

In addition to the the totals of the current donations, and how far into the immediate future they’ll get us, hypothetically, is there also a way to give some indication of projected funds totalled from future monthly gifts, or even just the number of individuals who are giving monthly donations?

I ask because I think that getting a certain critical mass of repeating monthly donations will likely be what will make or break this site.

Let’s say person [A] is thrilled by the restoration work going on here and donates $100, but does so once and disappears.

On the other hand, let’s say persons [B], [C], [D], [E], & [F] can only donate $1, but can all do so every month. In less then two years, together, they would out-donate person [A] because they would be focusing on supplying sustainable revenue and not flash in the pan giving.

Most people, like me, probably can’t spare a large amount in the immediate future. But most can probably spare a tiny amount repeating. And all it would take would be a handful of people who are donating like that monthly to sustain the site indefinitely as long as they continued to do so.

So is there a way to indicate not only immediate funds, but also what’s pledged down the line, or even just the current number of people have reating donations?

All that said, that might be way to complicated to do with just one power up indicator.

Perhaps have two? One with the monthly goal of $75 that has to be reached each month, and another that totals all the monthly donations that are currently pledged to be ongoing, so people have a rough idea of what the ongoing monthly shortfall will be?

Or maybe all the indicator ideas above are just not worth the trouble?

I’ll see if I can get an idea of the two and post the results so far.

.edit.

To date; 31 people have donated and we are solvent through June. I believe I saw that four were setup as recurring monthly.

I wish I could say that I noticed it because I spoke French.

Or even because of the two semesters of French I took in high school a certain number of years ago that’s beginning to be to high for my liking.

Alas. I can only claim to know how to translate on Google.

“Vivent” les rois, n’est-ce pas? (Same pronunciation)

"Right now the coffees are doing their final work." (Airi, Masked Rider Den-o episode 1)

“Vivent les rois” is the grammatically correct form. But “Vive les rois” is more commonly used, and is accepted I think. The expression come originally from “Que vivent les rois”, litteraly “Let the kings live”, the french expression being the equivalent of “Long live the king(s)”, but its shorter form “Vive les rois” is now more understood as “Hooray for the kings”, hence the singular “Vive” instead of the plural “Vivent” for the verb “Vivre” (to live).

I can understand you wanting to move on from something that has become a financial burden Jay, I didn’t realise it was costing you that much to keep this place running from month to month. Though it is a real shame you won’t be getting involved in discussions anymore, reading many of your posts while banned is part of what actually made me want to try and return to being an active member here and I was actually looking forward to being part of a number of topic discussions that you were actively involved in yourself. I had actually thought stepping out of the ownership role and just to tech support would take a lot of weight off of your shoulders in being able to post and remain active in the community. I don’t know the reasons as to why this is not the case but I am disappointed that we’ll no longer have your voice around here.

In any event, it would be a sad day if this place were to suddenly cease to exist so I’ve just made a lump donation to hopefully go towards the immediate costs while something more sustainable is reached and in that respect, I have also setup a $1 per month automatic donation in the hope that others will do the same and as a combined effort, we can all come together to help keep this place going with minimal cost to the individual.

I haven’t had time to read the thread in full so I’m not sure exactly what other ideas are going around currently but I remember someone suggesting a list which I think is a good idea. You wouldn’t necessarily need to put names up if you didn’t want to advertise up front who is actually donating (which could lead to some odd situations where people assume favouritism or misconstrue moderation outcomes due to one person being a donator and the other not, resulting in an “us/them” dynamic amongst the community), instead just indicating if 1 of the 75 monthly dollar donation slots is taken or not, so you’ve got a visual indication to the community on how well or badly the site is currently coping with the base funding. If you happened to get over 75 monthly donators then they would spill over into a surplus fund to go to things like new forum features, competition prizes, etc.

So maybe just a stickied thread under the forum announcement area something like the below?

OT.com Donation Status

Base monthly site costs ($75p/month)
Slot 1. Filled
Slot 2. Filled
Slot 3.
Slot 4.
.
.
Slot 75.

Surplus site funds (for new site features, competitions, etc)

The money never bothered me. I was happy to do it.

My decision to hand over the day-to-day responsibilities to the mods was driven primarily by my diminished interest in the franchise. I didn’t bother with TLJ, RO, or Solo until they hit digital/Netflix, and this place deserves more enthusiastic management than that. Luckily for everyone, the mods stepped up and so did the membership, which is pretty cool.

As for participating as a member, I’ve said everything I have to say about the state of the franchise and the fandom; I don’t see the point in continuing those discussions. I’ll still lurk because I’m interested in the various film-based preservation projects, so maybe I’ll add an occasional thumbs up for the hard-working preservationists 👍

A fair and respectable position Jay. Thank you for creating OT.com in the first place, everything you’ve done for it and I wish you all the best in whatever the future may hold for you.

We’re working on it currently with either a graph or a list similar to your suggestion. Regarding surplus money, I’m always going to want to push any extra dollars into the next available month’s payment. That won’t be solely my decision though. If we were to really need a patch or upgrade, we can handle that as needed.

In my opinion, you should build up a pretty big buffer, I would say as much as three years, before you consider slowing down the donation effort. Then you could start it up again when the buffer dips below 1 year’s expenses

Sad to hear this Jay but huge thank you for everything that you’ve done for the site and community over the years.

Count me in for a donation, and +1 to those suggesting a monthly amount tracker - that’s motivating.

Onwards!

I for one will miss you Jay in the discussions, and your stewardship, but I understand your decision. Thanks for all you’ve done for the site, and for many lively discussions!

Good luck to the mods! We are in very capable hands!

Ps. I will start donating.

I’ll have to begin donating. I don’t want this place to die. I’ve been lurking here since I was 13 and I’m 24 now. Watching projects go from gout scripts to harmys reconstructions and now film scans has just been cool. It’ll go one day I know but not soon I hope.
