Would have loved to watch this about Christmas. Any chance?

Unfortunately not, however as a donor you do have previews of all 4 reels you can watch and that covers the entire movie. Although not release quality it is 1080p and quite acceptable for a casual viewing. Just a reminder to people though that the previews are not to be shared with non-donors, so if I see them shared it will mean I will be less generous with previews from future scans.

Hey all- just wondering if anything came of this project? I enjoyed the preview reels, but it seems an actual final assembly never occurred?

I’ll be concentrating on Titanic first, I plan to start work on that later this month. I also have a copy of Alice in Wonderland a scan that was done back in 2015, and we’ve been looking into possibilities to get a second Alice print scanned. And I’ve been busy getting other scans done, and hopefully there will be several more scans to do very soon (think Sleeping Beauty, Lady and the Tramp, and we have access to two prints of Jungle Book we can scan as well - all IB Technicolor). And after I get those scanned there’s still more to do - Lion King, the second Cinderella print (we will need at least R1 scanned), Fantasia Kostal, and The Land Before Time. So any donations towards scanning would be much appreciated, I have very little money at the moment to continue spending on scans so like poita I’ll soon run into a dead-end.

Here is a preview from Jungle Book:

By the way, although that’s open matte I will almost certainly not release it like that. You can see the framing is really bad and not at all intended to be shown like that.

you might want to finish one before starting 5 or 6 more, just from an economics perspective.

There isn’t an unlimited window of opportunity, if we don’t scan some of these prints then they will be returned to their owners and we won’t have the opportunity again.

Just wondering…so are there actually any old Disney animated movies that were remastered for Bluray properly?

Author
Time

Probably not. I want to say the majority of their movies have had problems with their most recent and some previous video releases, with some having issues going back to 1999 or earlier.

@Enigmo I can’t answer that as I haven’t reviewed every movie personally, but I would say “probably not” at least from what I have seen so far. I encourage you to go to any 35mm shows that may be playing in your area, although now a couple of years ago I went to several 35mm shows of classic Disney films and I got to experience in some cases for the first time the experience in a cinema shown on 35mm, and in other cases for the first time since the early 1990’s.

Had a go at colour correcting this.

I didn’t really use anything as reference though, except for taking a glimpse at the Blu-ray remaster and seeing the walls being blue and not brown-ish; and also skin having a bit more of its own tone, rather than looking plain white. It was very quick, and just experimenting, so by no means what I’m saying it should look like lol.

Also, yeah, I did DNR, not because I’m preferring it over keeping the grain and such, but just to go ahead and add another layer to the experiment.

But yeah, what is the best reference source for colour, of this movie? And do you guys think it’ll be impossible to have as much dark detail visible as the blu-rays, with this scan?

edit:
So I only now managed to get it into my preferred colouring tool, and found a different way to CC it. Much more naturl-looking imo and it does involve less subjective adjustment:

Though, yes, still without reference

Donation received from FrankB - Thanks!

Some of the infamous missing detail on the 2005 “restoration”:

The detail Disney destroys in their “restorations” is unbelievable. There is something so magical about seeing these the way they were intended to be seen.

First post, yay!
If I’m still in time, I would gladly donate to this project!

I like this. But maybe it would look better with a less aggressive boost to saturation?

This is a print sourced from a re release, correct? I’m asking because of the Buena Vista logo at the start of the film, instead of the RKO logo. Either way, it’s incredible seeing this straight from film. I really look forward to seeing the finished product, that’s if this is a project that’s still in development.

Yes, that print had a Buena Vista logo not a RKO logo (I think it’s a 70’s re-print).

I’ll update the funding status soon, but the short story is that we’re still a long way from funding the scan of my print. I have had some donations I haven’t added to the public ledgers yet.

What is the current status of this print? Back in November you’d mentioned an upcoming release for donors. Just wondering if that is still forthcoming.

Has Anyone Looked At This Link To 35mm Cinderella On Ebay

I don’t think we need another print, and certainly not one that expensive! 😃

A new Cinderella Blu-Ray is coming soon (Anniversary Edition - The Signature Collection) but it’s not confirmed if it’s a new remaster. Let’s hope is is…

I don’t know what to say about the cover art. She’s running down the castle steps, desperate trying to leave as the clock is striking twelve (while the spell is fading away), and she’s smiling? The picture looks as though she is casually walking down the stairs, then “oops.” She just dropped her slipper. Better turn around and get it. Don’t get me wrong, the art and composition look great (as expected from Disney), but If they want to make cover art of Cinderella smiling, I don’t think that’s really the ideal scene to use.
