will this be an extended version with all missing scenes?

This is the Foreword from the Storybook.

THE GREAT GALACTIC EMPIRE had lasted for thousands of years, its Emperor Shaddam IV, believed it would last forever. He was Wrong. In a far corner of the Empire was a desert planet called Dune. It was the most important planet in the Empire, because it was the only planet on which the spice melange could be found. Melange could give people strange mental powers. The Fremen people who lived on Dune hated the Empire because it ruled their world harshly. Their legends said that some day a great leader would come to their world. He would set them free, and change the galaxy forever. They were right. This is the story of how it happened.

Prophecy Intro - (Water Droplets)

This is not a bad guess at how it was set up originally before the Virginia Madsen intro was filmed. I like the Virginia Madsen Intro a lot the music and everything but it does feel off in places. Anyway it’s some more food for thought.

Spicedriver’s version adds those scenes already, and it’s great.

The goal here is to try a different radical approach.
We are discussing the deleted scenes as a source for ideas, nothing more.

I’ve never seen the story book, thanks for the info.

Indeed, instead of showing the Reverend Mother right away, I can just keep her voice and show first a montage of water drops, guild ships and spice production.
So we would go from Space to Arrakis to spice, ending on the reverend mother, the Freemen listening and then the hand.

Will do it when possible…

This is a bit off topic in a way by this shocked me to lavish amazing looking set’s that were not in the film.

http://www.miljenkrekakljakovic.com/dune.php

The mind boggles on how good these look and not to commit it to film is insane, I can’t get me head around this but obviously there are scenes set in these areas.

It could be interesting to Replace the emperors palace with the matte painting?

http://www.duneinfo.com/Content/images/arrakis/ron-miller/dune27.jpg

But I am not sure that really looks like reflects the interior and the lavishness of the emperors palace and it would seem ideas moved on quite a bit from the concept art. But like I said note the different design for the Landing Ship also. I would say it is Geidei Prime if you put the Matte Painting in the Background replacing the emperors model palace. I have a feeling this would have been the Sandaukar troops Landing on Geidi Prime.

This does look like perhaps what the Palace was meant to look like though.

Tried to improve make it less CG looking.

I think Caladan looks Good and Arakkis and Geidei Prime but the Emperor’s Palace looks poor.

One More Correction Change Caladan to Blue like it should be

Aren’t those matte paintings from the 2000 miniseries? Or even Children of Dune in 2003?

Yes, the sets are from the miniseries.

Tried that variation of the intro showing the guild, navigators, emperor and it’s a bit confusing.
You see many images with no context and tend to disregard the words.
On the other hand it does feel something Lynch might do.
Will work on it a bit more and share it latter.

Thinking a bit about the Guild report segment.
It’s logical to have Paul’s voice. Atreides intelligence might have intercepted the “secret report within the guild”. And that’s what he’s reading on his pad.
Makes sense to show it after the navigator’s visit to the emperor. It provides a better explanation to what’s happening and also a reason for the Paul x Gurney fight scene. The Atreides are aware of something.

never seen the mini series… But I like the painting if it is from that.

Anyway try it with just water droplets then perhaps and transition to her cupped hands. Perhaps it is being over thought.

there is another clip in the trailer for the box sequence. The blurred chair the witch is no longer there then the optical effect rip or tear to the fire and the witch. this probably comes before “The pain!”

Ideed the kyle Mcglaughlan voiceover may mean it was part of the film book originally… It is a decent explaination that it is intelligence report.

You should see the mini series. Very low budget, odd accents, but very faithful to the book. The only real letdown is the bad CGI… 1984 models do look better.

Here’s the intro with added images as she speaks. For the sake of discussion give it a look 😃
The navigator’s “seeing eye” part does work, the rest adds little.
Still, it gives good information without being a awkward narration.

I’ll move on to the “guild report” and see what comes out of it.

Honestly, Spence’s movie edit of the miniseries is my favorite version of Dune that currently exists. Just remember that due to its low budget, it was filmed and staged like a play and not a movie - the idea being that it would be clear that it was overly stylized would compensate for the low budget, but it didn’t seem to work for most people, since the “cheapness” was the biggest complaint about it.

Children of Dune (adapts both Dune Messiah and Children of Dune) went with a more traditional filming style and I think was a bit better received because of it.

It’s not working…although the shots are not bad choices to try and explain what is being said I don’t think trying to explain what is being said works. The only way I am going to be able to explain how I think about this, is by trying it myself.

It’s not an easy thing at all this intro and I don’t know what to make of this part except it has to make you feel something, it has to be very visually engaging, and it also has to carry some meaning. But don’t take that as a bad thing it’s very hard to work with something that is incomplete. You must Look Beyond the footage.

Think about Elements

Atreides = Water
Harkonan = Wind
Fremen = Earth
Bene Gesserit = Fire
Guild = Space
Emperor = ?

6 Dimensions

😃

I understand what you suggest, it’s symbolic and not easy to do.
I can try just images of the elements, that might work.

I Googled the elements and traditionally you only have 5.
Perhaps the Emperor has no Element at all?

OK I finally found the Concept Art for The Emperors Palace…

Mock up of what it could look like…

I think this really does match the architecture in the movie. This means that Other Landing Shot is actually Geidi Prime indeed and we have a missing sequence. This may also explain why Paul Destroys a Stone pyramid with the Weiding module when demonstrating to the Fremen and the Emperors Golden Tent.

A nice update for Kaitain

As Far as the Guild Report Goes I would cut the Audio “A Secret Report within the Guild” and also “Send a third Stage Navigator to Kaitain to demand details from the Emperor…”.

So what does the Fremen Citadel Look like?

I think the Model Shot From Krull could be a Good candidate to Capture a sense of Something within the Rocky Outcrops… Although it is not something that needs to be shown It would be an excuse for an establishing shot. Alternatively it could be a secret Harkonan Suicide Squad Base.

I have read that the Model Production Facility Burnt down during production so this explains probably why some things are not present perhaps, or things were modified, I have no idea how much that impacted production but I can imagine it was a big setback.

Anyway been working a bit on the Folding Space sequence and some good ideas are at work!

Interesting finds! The new Palace also matches the Emperor’s landing craft better.
But who’s landing on Geidi Prime then? The Mentat bringing Leto’s message?

The Fremen Sietch model will work, I like that weird design from Krull.

I’d like to see your results, please share them someday 😉

Yeah i would say the Mentat bringing Leto’s message is the only possible answer.

If it were recreated then perhaps showing a Landed ship would suffice with the concept art enhanced i some way. Perhaps some animated smoke would do. that fighter which looks distictly Harkonan would suffice.

It would be better to use the big battlecruiser at the end of the film from Battle beyond the stars for the emerors arrival.

I got that scene wrong from trailer this is during hunter seeker flashback but I think this shot is meant to be the place mohiam dare not look. Witch and the Fire. Swap though for Paul Atreides and fire. “you will see me there looking back at you”

when they wash the Blood and flesh off the floor on Geidi prime this is the aftermath of the sting knife fight where he kills sandakar captain so yes it was filmed.

The more and more I read the only 2 main plot points missing are.

  1. Teraforming - This was adapted into the rain on Arrakis ending. No it is not raining all over the planet. So covered although altered entirely.

  2. Paul loses his son in Harkonnen raid which would be the reason for the Speech and Long live the fighters.

Rabaan in the desert is filmed though so you could show the Sietch and some fighters blasting it followed by Rabaan in desert perhaps after water of Life sequence. This would make the Revenge Speech much better it would fill in that blank and give much more meaning to the revenge after an attack on their home. Pauls Speech occurs on his return then but motivated by both knowledge and revenge.

Lynch really did have it covered in 3 hours as an adaptation that covered the main plot.

I just want to list some of the other missing material that I found in the script.

When Duke Lito Dies A meteorite was meant to crash into the sea on Caladan. This could be recreated and might be good.

After Paul Bumps into Gurney in the Desert there is a scene which covers that Gurney thinks Lady Jessica is a traitor against Atreides Paul stops Gurney from Attacking Jessica and explains Yueh was the traitor in House Atreides whom betrayed them. There is nothing we can do about this unless the footage were released but it is an important scene and it is perhaps the last Important scene left out. There is no good reason for this being left out the TV version at all. Or is it Brutality to women angle even though nothing was done to Jessica…

There was to be a montage of scenes between seeing water droplets between each scene. This was to show time passing but also Jessica giving birth to Alia, The Fremen training with weirding modules against robots. Paul is taken to an area where plants can grow due to condensation forming on rocks - Life was finding a way to seed Stilgar said they had seed for the plants and this expands upon the rain on Arrakis ending. AGain no Good reason for this to be cut from TV version except perhaps Alia as soon as she is born says “Mother” which might have been considered disturbing.

When The Battle at the end is over the Palace was surrounded by Fremen Warriors Princess Irulian says “Father? What will you do?”

On the end sequence…

How dare you speak to me…
GUILDSMAN #2
(speaking into electric
microphone)
Stop your speaking!!
PAUL
(to the Guildsmen)
Good. You have some idea of what I would do
but I will tell it to one who has never been
seen… one who hides deep in the Heighliner
control rooms. He will hear it first.
GUILDSMEN #3
(fear)
No!
Paul smiles as we move closer and closer to him.
282. INT. CONTROL ROOM - HEIGHLINER - SPACE
Suddenly we are in the Heighliner control room, near the floor in the
chemical spills. We move up into the orange gas. THUNDERING begins
to shake the Heighliner.
PAUL (V.O.)
Where are you… Let me see you or there
will be no spice.

We move into very thick gas and there is a ROARING. Suddenly Paul
sees the Third Stage Navigator.
PAUL (V.O.)(CONT’D)
You know what I’m about to say is true… I
have the power to destroy the spice forever.
The Guild Navigator’s mouth stretches back in a horrible MOAN. The
moan becomes more pained and grows louder and louder.
283. INT. GREAT HALL - ARRAKEEN PALACE - DAY
The Guildsmen in the room are MOANING and SCREAMING and swarming out
towards the doorway – the Fremen stop them. The Emperor and all are
amazed and frightened. There is a long hush. The old Reverend Mother
then turns and glares at Paul.

Now this mentions the third stage navigator but in the 5th draft it was to be a 4th stage navigator basically a sandworm but with a mutated human head similar to a 3rd stage navigator. The scene where the guildsmen are uneasy is in the costume documentary on the dvd. This would have been a cool monster moment at the end a human who now looks more like a sandworm than human because he has been alive for ages and stuffed himself full of spice 😃

There was also the plot point that in the place that the Bene Gesserit could not look… In the Black hole this 4th Stage Navigator would be the one that would kill the men who drank the water of life not allowing them to transcend but he could not stop Paul Atreides, but Because they never made the 4th Stage Navigator he sadly was never revealed as the top Secret Navigator of all Navigators the Ultimate Spice mutation.

The Navigator Being disintegrated is there correctly I think when Paul Drinks the Water of Life but the 4th Stage Navigator was to be the Boss if you like who basically knew Paul had the upper hand and the threat of making it rain he showed them he could destroy the spice but he did not.

Also when Paul Successful takes the Water of Life the last image of the sequence was to be a flower opening. Without the seeds of the scarce plants and the Vision of the Flower opening these things would have added to the Rain at the end but it’s missing all the shots that lead up to the rain plot point.

Some extra David Lynch’s Version of Dune Information…

The film Book Sequence as shown in the film Is I think an amalgamation of the “Secret Report Within the Guild” Animation or alternatively the planets were to be displayed on the Map shots rather than Text and Planets animation It may have been an alternate animation as the filmbook sequence feels like a bad edit overall. Should be Guild Navigator voice or not “Paul Atreides” basically. Need to remove the Text also no need for spelling out the planets with text but the Supers upon reaching a planet are Fine although we do not have one for Arrakis and the Atreides ships in the Sky… I think The secret Report in the film is the “Dumb version” Probably and they decided to double up the secret report original shots in a Film Book bad edit.

Anyway the Film Book sequence at the start with Paul on Caladan is meant to feature this Dialogue.

Book Voice

“19 Light Years Beyond Epislon Alangue is Arrakis”

“Each Day the Palms Along the outer walls of the palace at Arakeen consume enough water to sustain the lives of 100 men. The palms were placed by the Harkonnens to flaunt their water wealth in front of the city fremen”

Pauls Voice “Baron Harkonennen The enemy whose family held Arrakis as a qausi-fiefdom for eighty years under the Mercantile Choam company contract to mine the spice Melange”

The Part about the Palms is interesting as their were meant to be seen Palm trees burning once the the Arakeen Palace is invaded later in the film and is symbolic to the cut teraforming plot.

Book Voice “Know a Mentat by his red stained lips” We would cut to the shot of Thuffer Huwat intro from TV cut they are already in the room or should be…

The next thing I think I have figured out is the Shot of Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam in the TV version sitting in the chair, I think might be meant to be accompanied by the Narration on which Jessica (Paul’s Mother) Talks about she may lose her son tonight in the rain. It makes no sense hearing this narration at this point until Paul is summoned for the test. There is also the Shot from the Trailer of the Empty Chair a rip optical and the Witch in the flames before “The Pain!!!”

Leto Preparing the Message for the Baron and, Jessica and Leto Making Love should be put together chronologically.

When Yueh find the message inside a Harkonnen Corpse the Shot of him Making an surgical incision to remove the Message has been cut due to graphic imagery from TV cut.

The Bulls Head seen when meeting Duncun Idaho Was to feature a brief inner voice from Paul “The Bull that killed my Grandfather…”

When Paul was to Enter the Palace at the end of the film a short shot of the desecrated Bulls Head with an atreides flag stuffed in it’s mouth was to be shown.

When the Atreides Leave Caladan a soldier Crying and the Flag flying are missing shots. as is the Glass house behind the Landing field.

The Poster for the Film with the 2 moons may have been the very first Image after “A David Lynch Film” There is a change of starfield it looks awkward… and disolve into the shot of Pricess Irulians Eyes before The Opening Narration. Although the moons should not be so Cyan. But going off the Comic it is or was the First image at one time. Actually the Comic has the Sand Dunes Flipped Horizontally but the Moons are correct… Could be that Shot of the Moons from the Trailer? It is also Possible that The Areides Land on Arrakis at Night only in the Morning do the Duke Paul and Jessica finally Arrive with the Super “Arrakis - Source of the Spice” on the Ships Fying on this Shot.

This seems to suggest it was eakmarked for an Arrival shot…

I think what seems to be going on is that Princess Irulian Intro needs to come Later after something… Are we missing a Shot Of the Highliner Disapearing from around Planet IX? Then Irulian Intro eyes dissolve in through shot of water Ripples or Wormhole Tunnel (as we go from Sound of Spaceship to Intro Back to Sound of Spaceship and then The secret Report) “The Secret Report” with the map shots from the filmbook. Remove “Send a 3rd stage guild Navigator to Kaitain blah blah blah” On “The Spice must Flow” >>> Highliner Appears above Kaitain? Water Droplets… Ripples. This would be far more magical to see a Space trip right at the start book ending the Narration.

Brad Dourif stated “I know David would have Liked to have done Some of the folding Space shots” I think he may be referring to the unfinished opening scenes as the trip to Arrakis looks pretty complete minus Gas being pumped in through the hole to the chamber but Caladan looks like IX strangely when the Navigator Spits it into the Universe so perhaps it was half complete.

Ok I think I may have figured out a way the start can work better.

Opening Starfield “A David Lynch” film A Guild Heighliner is shown and vanishes (from Planet IX?)

Opening Credits with music score

cut to “Planet Caladan” Super, waves crashing no Irulian Narration Paul film Book sequence with no english text and Gurney Huey and Thuffer enter earlier to allow moved shot of Bene Tlielax shot of THuffer over “know an Mentat by his red stained lips” and then fight training… Paul Meets Duncan then Meets his father “The Sleeper must awaken”

Wormhole visual or rolling waves into Princess Irulian eyes and Narration “Otherwise known as Dune”.

?Missing Scene? (Speculation) Baron Harkonnen with the Arrakis Globe speaking of the trap that house Atreides are walking in to. Quite an Inconic scene and it’s a strange omission? “Geidi Prime” Super or was it “Arrakis source of the Spice” Super and the Baron is in the Palace on Arrakis about to leave. He must also send a message because Leto later replies?..

Heighliner appears above Kaitain

Dropship and 3rd stage guild navigator sequence as in extended edition… “We need to look at Paul Atreides on Caladan”

Space shots Reverend Mother Leaves Kaitain (Princess Irulian Narration about Benegesserit Sisterhood and the Super Being) Jessica goes to Door…Pauls Dream then Jessica and Reverand Mother talk Upon awaiting Paul to be tested Jessica narration about “she may lose her son…” over shot of reverand mother in chair from TV cut. Witch in the flames just before “The Pain!!!”

I think this solves the problems of the clunky opening but let me know what you think? I have a Hunch the Baron with the Globe was shot even though it is not in any script as it’s a really important intoduction to the main villain it’s such a weird scene to leave out the Villains iconic introduction that it just can not have been left out even if it was very short we need to see what the Baron gave up before we see him on Geidi prime and getting the message from Piter.

Having thought on this some more just keep the opening credits after Irulian narration straight to Kaitain with the Super for “Kaitain home of the empetor of known universe” and then the scene order I have stated.

I have realised that while the Duke prepares his message for the Baron, surely we were meant to hear the Barons message in voiceover? This would seem to be what is missing here. As it makes no sense without the Baron giving a message whilst Leto replies.

Universal should just prepare a proper extended cut that Lynch would be willing to put his name to other than theatrical version… Because Lynch won’t go back on it and the ball is in their court to sort it out. It’s not rocket science and the TV cut although interesting should be relegated to “mistake”.

Obviously the secret report within the Guild was originally meant to tie in with the Beast Rabaan in the Bath tub while Spice production was halted but the message was diffetent.

“I’ll miss caladan so much” is swapped for the shot of the soldier crying. And that scene is put back into the conception of Alia. There is mention of a shot of geese flying also over the water before Atreides take off. Background missing on Landing field of Caladan glass gouse and castle on the cliff.

Pauls Eye within the wormhole is the place the reverend mothet dare not look at the end.

There must of been a filmbook entry at some point regarding the prision planet and banning of atomics as is referenced also as Paul will send the empetor there at the end of the film.

When Paul in his Room on Arrakis film book is meant to be about Spice worms and acid they produce in their stomach before his father enters.

Every filmbook sequence is screwed up in the film with bad editing actually.

Max von Sydow is also known as “Liet” whom is Chani’s father. In the Ornithopter a spuceminer calls him by his name and paul takes note. He is the secret leader of the fremen. His death scene and chani referring to him as Liet then would make sense but this was left out the TV cut.

Voice over of “We are the secret of the Universe” or “we are the secret” said by fremen reverend mother and then the fremen chant should also find a place at some point in the first act… Perhaps these words were muttered alone at the start of the film as we look into space But the whole prophecy sequence should remain omitted and stay as in theatrical version. It would tie in nicely just this and only this.

New Release of Dune 1984 coming in 2020 by Koch Media from Original Camera Negative… New Special features too but no mention of the huge amount of missing material…

Extended Dialogue scenes. I want to log them because It’s taken quite a bit of time to study the script in detail.

After the Fight with Gurney (Shield Practice) Paul “Things have been so Serious here Lately”
GURNEY
Yes. I sensed the play in you lad, but this
can no longer be play. Tomorrow we leave
for Arrakis! Arrakis is real. The Harkonnens
are real.

Then Later in the conversation.

Paul “The eyes yes, yes saturation of the blood by the Spice Melange”

Thuffir - A world is Supported by 4 things
Paul - Learning of the Wise, justice of the great, prayers of the righteous and valor of the brave
Thuffir - The First law of a Mentat
Paul- THuffir…Please…
Thuffir - Paul… the First Law and in the Proper form!
Paul - Because a Mentat is trained for Supreme Logic, he knows process cannot be understood by stopping it. Understanding must move with the flow of the process…Must join it… Must flow with it.

Will I get to see an guild Navigator on my crossing to Arrakis?

Thuffir - No they will be far off in the control rooms of the Heighliner. Now tell me of the Harkonnens and some History of Arrakis It’s still testing time.
Paul - Our mortal enemies the Harkonnens, Held Arrakis in Quasi fiefdom for 80 years under the choam company contract to mine the geriatric spice melange. Now under orders from the emperor we must replace the Harkonnens, but we must replace the Harkonnens in fief complete… A victory for my father… or atleast and apparent victory.
Thuffir - Apparent indeed. This appearance contains the deadliest peril. Duke Leto is extremely popular amongst the great houses of the Landsraad, and a popular man arouses the jealousy of the powerful…
Paul - THe Baron is our enemy yes, but behind him I expect the emperor…

Ok so big dialogue part here that negates the need for for the “Know a Mentat by his red stained Lips” possibly It also may mean that the edit was due to occur on the Signet ring instead as this info would come later. But still great info better delivered this way.

After the Scene where Duke Leto prepare the message for the Baron.

Jessica enters the Room.
Duke Leto - Did you look in on Paul?
Jessica - I…(starts to cry)
Duke Leto - Yes? Jessica! what is it?
Jessica - I’ll miss Caladan so much

This is important because she knows she is to lose Duke Leto as per Reverand mother.

Geidi Prime the Baron’s iconic opening Dialogue was shot as I thought.

Piter - They’ll leave Caladan soon, Baron, and I have an answer from Duke Leto… (And Alternate “They’ve left Caladan” 5th draft)
Baron - The Driest Planet in the universe, where they speak in hushed tones of moisture, let alone water… It would of course be a worthless rock were it not for the spice. So… It becomes the Biggest mantrap in history and duke Leto is headed into it’s jaws… What does it say Piter?

The Water Sellers outside the Arakeen Palace was touched upon and mentioned Between Yueh and Jessica before he checks the fremen staff of the Palace… You can also see a shot in the EE documentary of the crowd outside the palace.

Just before Jessica see’s the Shadout Mapes she has a vision of a Blurred Guild Navigator Paul Dead on a stone floor and Fire Burning… “I must speak with you Leto!”

After the scene where “Let water be a bond between us” we were meant to see the Flashing Harkonnen Light Signals in the cliffs of the shield wall… This is probably also the shot where the Ornithopter is flying up to the top of the shield wall also but was re-purposed. There was meant to be an Ornithopter sent out and also Ornithopters were also meant to be seen just before the Palace shield was to be raised.

Then in the scene with Thuffir and Duke Leto in observation room.

Thuffir - Supposedly he will Lead them to… true… Freedom. My Lord…
Duke Leto - what is it?
THuffir - My lord this is very difficult for me
Duke Leto - Get to it Thuffir!
Thuffir - yes my lord, a Harkonnen agent was killed last night. Before he died he started an acid erasure in a message canister he carried. We stopped that erasure. The remaining portion my lord is… I’ll read it to you… It starts “Leto will never suspect, and when SHE strikes, the blow falling upon him from a beloved hand, it’s source alone should be enough to destroy him.” I’ve authenticated that it was under the barons own Seal.

In Paul’s Room

Duke Leto - Sorry you have to sleep so far underground… We can’t take any chances… Paul I’m doing a hateful thing but I must… The Harkonnens wish to trick me into thinking your mother is the traitor. I’d sooner distrust myself.
Paul - Or me…
Duke Leto - What better way to destroy me than sow suspicion on the woman I love. But they have to think they succeeded. Your mother must not know.
Paul - It must look real – I see
Duke Leto - But if anything should happen to me tell her the truth I never doubted her for the smallest instant. I should want her to know.
Paul - Nothings going to happen

Knocking on the Door

Duke Leto - Yes?
Voice - An urgent message, my lord. It’s Duncan Idaho he carries a message from the Fremen.
Duke Leto - I’ll be back, son.

So as you can see there is actually quite a bit of dialogue missing that was cut out It’s nice to just document the missing sections anyway. There is a clear case that although the script probably weighs in at 3.5 hours they had 4.5 hours assembly so I think it could be safe to assume that there is more shot than is in the script as the “Let water be the Bond between us” is not in any script. It’s a safe assumption that there would have been a scene with the fremen people calling out “Mahdi” somewhere and small beats like Harkonnens hiding in the cliffs with strange electronic equipment. But there will be more that we do not know about. No joke it is all there I feel.

How many Psychedelic steam punk sci-fi films are there from the 80’s anyway? I think just this one that really stands out and it’s worthy of being restored in my honest opinion.

When the Harkonnen ships are approaching I feel we are missing a Radar Image for Atredies side and The Baron’s ships he see Arrakis planet out of a window or a screen. Actually the shield winding down was to be a scene before Duke Leto get’s done over by Dr.Huey.

Spice Smugglers Ships is another missing thing

Guild Satellite shown before Guild Report

The other Report was a CHOAM company report so there is a case for seeing their logo as well as the guild navigator Logo before the Bath tub scene.

In the EE documentary we also see shots of Sandakar attacked in the desert and Paul Running to safety with blast all around him so the Emperor is there a bit longer than the film would have you think also. This is possibly the taking of the communications Room where they set off the Atomics.

Fremen Binoculars is also an interesting one… What did looking out of them look like? Probably just normal circle and not sci-fi but Paul was meant to attack the smugglers this is where he meets Gurney. Actually in the battle with the Harkokonnens and fremen in the desert we see a shot of a smuggler being blown across screen this was to be in the part we he meets Gurney in the desert and was moved.

Piter travels to Geidi Prime… From Galaxy of Terror

I have a feeling the 2 children that don’t get on with Alia would have been exploited for the Revenge Speech and that Alia was taken but the 2 children she did not get along with were killed by the Harkonnens. This would mean the rift was bridged at some point between Alia and the 2 children. This was the Hatred and Revenge that spawned the “Emperor we come for you” although Emperor was already there on the planet. He Landed during the water of Life sequence. Alternatively seeing Alia being taken would have been enough for the Revenge speech… In one documentary you can actually see the Sandakar near the Sietch so yes something was shot.

My estimate for a complete tight cut weighs in about 3 hours 40 minutes (that leaves 40 minutes off shaved worthless footage)

Nightflyers 1987 movie has a pretty good match for the guild dropship 😃

Navigators were meant to be shuttled over to the Heighliners anyway…

When the Navigators Leave the Emperor at the near the end of the film the shot where they are walking down the Corridor is Super imposed over Pauls Eyes… From UK DVD documentary.

I feel that perhaps the Fremen Prophecy scene with Reverand Mother Ramaldo might work better after Paul and Jessica crash in the desert…the 2 moons with flames from the trailer does suggest that this is while the Arakeen Palace is Burning… Or perhaps it is part of Paul’s waking dream to be cut in before “They will call me Mua-dib”… Perhaps the “we are the secret of the universe” “Chant” could be used on the Pauls disturbing dream about the “Killing Machines”

On the princess Irulian narration I have a feeling as she was meant to fade out and hourglass was meant to fade in… then the hourglass fades out and she fades back in. Not only does this represent the holtzman effect but also the sands of time the spice the folding infinite. This is very beautiful image that only half of it is there…either it is traditional with gravity but it could be from left to right… Probably traditional. Finally so simple yet so effective.

4th Rock, I have been playing about with the opening part a bit and I am getting more conviced that having to talk about planet names in anyway shape or form apart from Arrakis is where this film is faltering.

New order at the moment really want to get the start nailed proper.

start as in theatrical

Caladan meet the main characters up until “The Sleeper must awaken”

Ship Landing on Kaitain and Emperor.

We need to take a look at Paul Atreides into Pauls dream.

footage was bridged using shots of waves from “Big Wednesday”

I have discovered the TV prologue has the Original cue for the Opening with the Waves on Caladan the Castle and the Window of Paul’s Study

a perfect Matte shot for the Sietch on Arrakis could be the mountain matte from Conan the Destroyer Opening Credits (Funnily enough in production at the same time and same studio by same company as Dune)

Dune really looked it’s best with the Albert Whitlock Matte shot of the ships Landing and as many others have stated the effects are un-even aside from Worms and Carlo Rombaldi’s foreground miniatures and so on… It Kind of feels to me the more I look at this film at it’s opening it does not want to be a sci-fi film but evolves into one, but it does want to have worlds or environments but more like traditional Matte shots seem to really suit the film.

I started thinking about Using the Albert Whitlock Matte for “the Island” but composite the castle Caladan miniature on the top to even that out in some way visually. The shot of the castle in the rain does sell the castle better in my opinion from the TV cut.

I don’t mind the Designs for the Ships in the Film apart from the Ornithopter but it feels like it needs some sort of subtle expansion although my mind has currently changed a bit on this now it needs more environment with a splash of vehicles visually.

But as you can see the Albert Whitlock really feels Dune and the Rest just don’t really… So anyway there is some thoughts on art. The Ron Miller Still might be for the filmbook weather report?

The Matte at the end is an unused matte from the film.

Low Interest can become High Interest if you can see the potential in it 😃 Superman 2 matte mixed with Dune Atreides Heighliner.

I admit it’s a mess of a film but those are the films that are ripe for fan editing…

If we get some extra deleted material on the new release and the existing deleted material in good quality (Fingers crossed) this film could very well turn out to be something very special.

I am sticking to my guns on environment mattes would propel this film Visually but It’s the story that needs sorting out most of all.

using this Matte for the 2nd moon would also be a good option…

Basically this film does not want it’s visual effects updating so much as that it just needs to be Evened out… But yeah the Story needs deleted scenes but Visually I think it can be fixed by mixing in Mattes from other films to create a linear aesthetic.

Trying to find the right look for Arrakis… THe Idea would be “Arrakis, Dune, Desert PLanet…” Something like this Image into filmbook “See Spice Mining” into filmbook sequence…Leaving out the whole “here we are now” and all that rubbish straight to Arrakis and a glorious image of it that would captivate.

This is about the best looking thing I could find for arrakis that has that Golden Era of Matte effects look about it 😃

So anyway that is mostly the art part out the way pretty much.

But thinking about it some more the Choam Company Logo would make more sense before the “Spice Mining” filmbook and save that image for later. Keeping the film book simple is key to making it better.

We never need to see Geidi Prime or Planet Kaitain at all from space.

Did Geidi Prime anyway just in case…

Thanks,

Replacement Matte after they crash… Suddenly a really boring still image comes up on screen

“Hurry this crash might Bring a worm!”

Original

EDIT
This should be replaced with live footage

“The Big Rock is further than I thought…”

Albert Whitlock 1967 the Way West Matte put in had to remove the clouds because it is on Arrakis… But there is a nice extra bit of whitlock and using it for the moons also but anyway bit of fun 😃 Perhaps needs a bit of Lightning. Pleased with how it came out in the end.

moon shots are all clunky apart from the TV cut let water be a bond between us. Going to Use Superman 2 moon matte for second moon.

The Model Moon just looks wrong IMO and the matte moon looks Good that we see with the hand on it but the second moon just looks like a test shot.

they were obviously going for this in the film…

2nd Moon Matte

Check out the shot during shield practice also that is clearly not kyle McGlaughan… In fact the shot is not even needed it actually creates an issue being put in. Just delete…
