Info: 'Dr. No' - Rare Uncut Version 1st Beta/VHS release 1982 — Page 2

It is very possible that this version was struck from a print not of the final cut, like the accidental showings of the Blade Runner workprint. However, the fact that the original version then became lost makes this an unlikely scenario.

Yeah I own the old laserdisc release of Dr. No and it’s the standard version. I heard rumors old copies of From Russia With Love had “what a performance” at the end but that was debunked. So I don’t know how possible it is the beta is uncut, but I’m interested to see.

There’s an AMC airing of Goldfinger from the early-mid 2000s floating around the internet that has “James bond will be back in [on her majesty’s secret service]” at the end instead of Thunderball. So if that version of Goldfinger still exists, maybe the uncut Dr. No does

Hello, although I have uploaded many things in the past, my Mega account was taken down recently. If you are looking for something I’ve previously said I uploaded, I may not have it anymore or know where it is. I’m sorry

I’m sure an uncut print is safe in the trunk of the stolen Goldfinger Aston Martin DB5. 😛

Does anyone know if any early bond releases are open matte? I remember hearing something about The man with the golden gun vhs having more information on the sides but that’s about it.

TMWTGG is among the tapes that Williarob bought, so maybe they can confirm this for you. 😃

It looks unevenly masked, so it isn’t between the frames, it’s a slight masking error.

Uh, S.W. that link directs to an entirely different but certainly interesting “feature”, perhaps worthy of a preservation in itself. 😄

😃 Here’s the correct URL, I hope:

Some new crap from Ebay with linking to completed auctions I guess? Thanks for the correction!

I wonder why it says “music recorded at…” BETWEEN the frames.

The credit scroll goes outside the image we would see projected. I’ve seen this with a 35mm print of The Shining.

I have an old ABC airing of Golden Gun, it’s censored but definitely looks about as open matte as that print. Probably cropped when the frames are hard matted. I can check it later. I also have the laserdisc of Golden Gun but it’s hilariously sped up to fit 2 sides, I think it’s the same as the ABC airing. The Full Screen VHS of Live and Let Die I had was definitely pan and scanned though if I remember oddly enough.

If you watch the old original trailers of the first 3 movies, those movie clips are full frame (sometimes hard matted for special effect shots or for whatever reason)

Reminds me of the shifting aspect ratios of a Christopher Nolan movie. Nothing wrong with that I’m just curious what it would be like to watch TMWTGG that way.

Curious enough to consider creating such a version?

Does that mean you are the winner of that auction?

😮 Me? No, I wish I had that kind of money to spare right now!

I meant would you be curious enough to tackle such a project at some point?

I was the only bidder on an auction for an '82 RCA CED of Dr No this weekend ($0.99) which I have sent to -1. His CED player (like most of them these days) is very hit and miss, and the discs can be equally troublesome, so there are no guarantees that he’ll be able to play it at all, but with a little luck he should be able to confirm or deny the existence of any deleted scenes on the disc.

There is a facebook group for CED that has a lot of knowledgeable members and info with regards to repairs and replacement stylus cartridges for most RCA players.

Great read. And glad they were willing to help. I feel bad you had all that hassle with a betamax when I have a working deck.

On a related note, has anyone ever researched HBO’s Bond marathon in 1980? They ran every film up to at least TSWLM. Not sure if it was one month or spaced out over two or three. It definitely took up a big chunk of their schedule. It was the first time I had seen any of them uncut, and it was quite a revelation having grown up with the edited ABC tv versions throughout the '70’s.

JEDIT:Seems it was mostly the Connery films. So much for my memory!

It was actually quite fun - I’d never really tinkered with the inside of a VCR before - they were all too expensive back in the day, I didn’t want to break it (or accidentally electrocute myself!), but Q seems to know what he’s doing.

Yeah, I’ve done my share of tinkering over the years. Had to unjam one of my Laserdisc players more than once. There isn’t much left in consumer electronics one can tinker with the insides today. I’m amazed I was able to fix the now ten year old HDTV in my living room. I came very close to junking it, but a little online research really paid off. It just needed some bad capacitors replaced on the power board. I had some help with the de-soldering and soldering, but I did the rest. It’s as good as new.
I doubt the super slim flat panels made now even have that many circuit boards within.
