Just checked it out. Absolutely wonderful job, the color balance you chose perfectly fits the tone of the movie! Can’t wait until the full thing is done!

Getting an error with that key

Okay, I don’t know why it did that, I instead included the full unprotected link this time.

Absolutely love it. It’s baffling to me why the director/editor wouldn’t want it this way in the first place. Besides the color correction/lighting do you plan on editing the film any further? New music ect.?

This is just my take on the direction of this movie, but I think they try to make it look dull and desaturated because its during the reign of the Empire. But I could be wrong 😃

Personally, while very colorful, I’d like something less saturated and closer to the OT. But nevertheless it’s a very nice regrade. Kudos to OP.

Very nice indeed

I definitely think it is an improvement. To me, I would kind of compare Young’s cinematography on Solo with some of Gordon Willis’ work, the cinematographer of The Godfather (who was also known as the prince of darkness). I know it seems odd to compare a cinematic masterpiece like The Godfather with Solo, but they both rely heavily on diegetic light to inform the lighting on set, and both films result in a lot of shadows. Also, both films deal with the underworld of their respective universes, and Lucas and Coppola were close companions and collaborators (with Lucas even filming some insert shots for The Godfather as well as doing some uncredited editing work), so I think the comparisons are appropriate.

But, if you actually watch The Godfather, yes the film is dark, but the parts of the scene that are exposed to the light are clear. With Solo, it feels like the Colorist put some kind of filter on that made the movie darker in the worst way possible. Yes, you want the darks to be dark, but you want to have what is lit to actually stand out, so you have a decent contrast. Good job one what you’ve done so far.

Solo looks like they just didn’t correct the raw footage at all.

Exactly. Fortunately, the gamma curve is so flat that the editors here have some latitude to grade with.

I’d suggest going for a Kodak 5247 film stock emulation. The current grade seems very sloppy and over-saturated

It doesn’t hurt to offer help, but it always hurts to disregard those that do.

Well considering how little time I spent on the grade, I’m not surprised to hear such a reaction. I went for a mix of Kodak 5245 (what TPM was shot on) and a highly saturated look. I’ve tried in the past to make older looking film emulations such as 5247 even using scenes shot on digital and the same scene shot on 5247 and I can’t seem to make a consistent emulation. An ideal film emulation grade should be able to create a consistent recreation no matter the shot rather than having to tweak the grade for each individual shot. Emulating modern stocks is a lot easier, but I definitely want to go for an older look like 60’s or 70’s film stock such as 5247, so I’ll keep trying to work on that and do more research.

My hunt for proper old film stock emulation is why my PT project still hasn’t come out yet. The upcoming ROTS release is based on the modern film stocks TFA and TLJ were shot on rather than the recreating a film stock used on the OT, and honestly I only feel like releasing it to satisfy people’s hunger for a better looking PT and not because it’s something I’m satisfied with.

In terms of the saturation levels, I’m still playing around with that. I think the film’s more fun atmosphere would lend itself to that visual style, but maybe I will settle for something more balanced.

There seems to be a decent LUT for 5247, maybe try it out and see how it fares. Or I just might myself.

I very much like the direction it’s heading, a pop feel with vibrant colors. I think Lando’s outfit in the film is a great place to look for that inspiration haha.

EDIT: I think focusing on the primary colors and maybe shifting colors to align more with the primaries, would really complement the elements already in the film nicely! Red (the Maw, Crimson Dawn), Yellow (Kessel, Lando clothes), and Blue (Vandor, Han’s stolen landspeeder, hyperspace).

It doesn’t hurt to offer help, but it always hurts to disregard those that do.

Any chance you have the theatrical-styled subs in PGS format? Maybe even the theatrical-styled ones but in white instead of yellow?

Has anyone created this? I’d really like to replace the stock subs for this movie

I was a really big fan when this was first announced. What happened?

I’ve paused working on this and my PT project, till I can either fix my desktop or buy/build a new one.

My macbook pro is great for editing but since I’m always using it at work and school it’s not available for long renders.

I still think I’ll be releasing this one before any of my PT grades.

If any of you don’t know, there is a really good color grade of Solo called “Solo: The Bold One” which I enjoyed and was part of what inspired me to start my own color grade.
