The 1977 bootleg features the mono soundtrack as Beru’s dialogue is different for the Lars dinner scene:

Which end credits does that copy have? Is there space between John Williams and the LSO credits or are the together. I’m guessing there is a few lines of space between them (like the GOUT). The only two copies of the alternate end credits (Puggo and the pre-ANH bootleg VHS) have the stereo mix of Beru.

I’m on a quest for a better copy of the alternate end credits if you hadn’t guessed. At the moment I’ve used Puggo for timing and SSE for the text and recreated a version, but there is nothing like a good quality copy of the original.

It’s the same as the GOUT, like you predicted.

I have bought a scanner, the best in it’s price class apparently, which should yield 48bit scans with an effective resolution of 4300 dpi (if the reviews are to be believed):

http://www.filmscanner.info/en/ReflectaRPS10M.html

I also bought the Silverfast software package, which allows you to calibrate the colors using a it8 color target. An uncalibrated scan generally gives a fairly poor reproduction of the colors of a film frame or photo:

http://www.silverfast.com/highlights/autoit8/en.html

This weekend the scanning process will begin. When I have the first scans, I will create a separate thread dedicated to technicolor print reference scans matched to print, where I will share 1080p 8 bit versions of the calibrated scans for color reference purposes, and to discuss and compare with other OT versions.

A big thanks to all who contributed!

As a special thank you, everyone who donated will also get access to the raw scans, and the high color depth, high resolution calibrated versions of the scans.

This will be fun. I can’t wait to see what it ends up looking like.

I wonder why they dubbed her voice…I find no reason for it, but evidently George did.

The on set dialogue recording was probably not good. Happens even in films today, though it tends to be a little more seamless now.

Sort of off topic, but there are parts of ROJ where the ADR really bothers me. Most are with Leia’s lines.

There are several bad spots with that in the movie. The imperial officers in the opening sequence were pretty bad. (Not performance wise just lip sync wise) also Luke’s delivery of the lines when talking to obiwan do not match his facial expression at all. he sounds like he’s being genuine and trying to understand, but he looks pissed and like he’s being a smart ass.

I was just noticing the ADR problems on the Tantive IV. Leia and the guy who gets his throat crushed in particular.

Only thing I hate about so many old movies I love.

I’ve sort of rekindled my SE bluray regrade thread, creating several reference shots for future projects, which may include actually regrading the bluray:

http://originaltrilogy.com/topic/Star-Wars-Trilogy-SE-bluray-color-regrade/

To illustrate what I believe the theatrical colors of the 1977 version of Star Wars looked like, based on numerous technicolor print references, including the actual physical frames, and some algorithmic wizardry, here are several regraded shots, including the much debated yellow Tatooine grading, and the blue Death Star walls:

I will be adding new shots regularly, so if you’re interested, or want to discuss them, please visit the thread. 😃

This thread started with the discussion about the green corridors of Tantive IV. Having now seen some scans of a 1997 SE print, I can confirm that the corridors were not just green on technicolor prints, but on the 1997 SE prints as well. Here’s how it appears on the scans.

Not only the corridor, the whole frame is green. 😉

My understanding is that they used GL’s copy of the Tech IB to match to when they were working with the faded negative for the 97 SE. So it is not surprising that the 97 SE has some color similarities to the Tech IB. If only they had used it again when they scanned the negative for the DVD…

My ideal always seems to lie halfway between.

Here’s the Leia corridor shot as it appears on 1997 SE prints, which leaves no doubt the corridor originally was green for technicolor prints:

Yes, in the Technicolor prints. I think the green was less in the Kodak prints. But from your work, I think that isn’t green but yellow (yellow over dark colors looks green) that we see in the Tech IB prints.

Actually it wasn’t that green when projected - This was taken a few weeks ago with a color calibrated camera from the projection booth at a screening of an SE print:

The image Dre posted above was photographed with the same camera - really the only difference is that these images were photographed reflected from the screen, while the ‘green’ image was photographed by pointing the camera directly into the projector lens. Could the white of the screen be enough to change the color that much? I’m thinking perhaps it can…

If you boost the saturation of those last images, the colors are pretty close to the earlier images, although the green is somewhat less intense:

So, I believe it’s a matter of intensity and contrast. The colors are more intense when the projector is pointed directly at the camera, than when you capture the light projected on a screen, for which you only capture a fraction of the light emitted by the projector.

My, how fickle color is.

Also, different prints developed photo-chemically can turn out with slightly different color tones. That is my guess why they are so different.

Resurrect this old thread because I don’t think there is a need to start a new one…

Well, “ages” ago I was trying to regrade the WOWOW recording; the color target was a set of screenshots taken from the theatrical print (please do not ask me which one, because I simply can’t remember!); I used RaiTre recording as color reference, with few settings more to go closer to the target.

Top WOWOW, bottom WOWOW regraded:

do note that Luke in the jail corridor should not be so magenta; probably it’s due to out-of-sync problems, and the color macthing should have picked up a magenta laser (probably?)

Sadly my projects are lost due to an HDD crash… 😦 | [Fundamental Collection] thread | blog.spoRv.com | fan preservation forum: fanres.com
