Star Wars 4K77 - Regraded - No DNR (Released)

Hello.
Just bringing you a regraded version in 1080p. šŸ˜ƒ
If someone thinks is a good reference for the proper 4K, please use it (link to a gallery at the end of the post).

Workflow for this regrade:
The first thing to do is capturing a frame of the original 4K77 release. Then, I regraded that frame using Photoshop. When that single image is regraded, itā€™s time to use the great Dreā€™s colormatch tool to create a LUT (I ended using about 60 of them). And, last but not least, DaVinci Resolve to apply the LUTs and make some (a lot of) other corrections.

Audio and subtitle options are of course the same as the original 4K77 release.

A comprehensive gallery

WHERE CAN I FIND IT?
Look for it using your favourite torrent search engine. Or more specifically on katcr, or limetorrents.

If you canā€™t find, just PM, of course. Iā€™ll try to be around here quite often.

That looks very nice!

Could you export your Resolve Project and share a link to that here? (I donā€™t think that would break any rules since without already having 4K77 it would be worthless. Plus it would be a very small download). That way, everyone who already has a copy of 4K77 can simply import your project file into Resolve, open it, relink it to the 4K77 NoDNR source file we already have, and then render it out.

Also, if itā€™s as good as it looks in the stills I can apply it to the prores masterā€¦

Yeah, no problem.
I uploaded it to uploaded net.
If you have any trouble downloading it, just tell me.

Direct link: http://uploaded.net/file/9l4fda0o

You will see 2 folders with LUTs. There are about 160 (!!) of them, but as I said, I ended using only about 60.

Hi! How do I open it in Resolve? I try to connect to the database you shared, but get an error message. Sorry, if a dumb question, but canā€™t get it open.

It downloaded fine, but Iā€™m not sure how to open the project. It looks like you included the DB file, rather than going to File -> Export Project and saving a .drp project file.

Hey. Somehow I cannot open it either - when I click on it, nothing happensā€¦

You need to go to File -> Import Project and import the .drp. Then you go to File -> Project Manager and open the project. Then go to the media tab, right click on Star 23976.mov and choose Replace Selected Clipā€¦

You will also need to copy the 2 LUT folders from the first download into:

C:\ProgramData\Blackmagic Design\DaVinci Resolve\Support\LUT

Then go to File -> Project Settings -> Color Management and click on ā€œUpdate Listsā€.

Thanks so much Willia! All works great, but Resolve doesnā€™t support mkv files, so what do you think would work best here - extracting video with tsMuxer?

Resolve supports MP4 and Mov, so I usually use ffmpeg to copy the video stream to an MP4 Container:

ffmpeg -i input.mkv -vcodec copy -an output.mp4

Takes about the same time as tsMuxer does to demuxā€¦

Hey Williarob, I use ffmpeg all the time, including this particular script, with the exception of the ā€œ-anā€ part. What does that do? Is it ā€œaudio noneā€ or something like that? Just curious!

Yes -an = audio null

I forgot to say I work only with uncompressed files (x264 gave some trouble, uncompressed works perfect). I convert them using virtualdub, then save as quicktime .mov. The project should look for the source file I worked with. Iā€™m assuming youā€™re already bypassed this issue.

When rendered, I then use a brief avisynth script + megui + x264. With mkvtoolnix you can load the original 4K77 and simply replace the video with the regraded one.

BTW, in this 1080p regrade I worked a bit with the frames to remove reel change marks. So, no more cigarette burns in this regrade šŸ˜ƒ

Hi Willia, have you tried open the mp4 in Resolve? It gives me a lot of errors when I do. Probably, itā€™s because itā€™s H264?

If youā€™re going to be doing any reencoding, particularly for color alterations, itā€™s always going to be a better idea to convert it to a lossless (or near-lossless) codec first. H264 isā€¦ not that.

I recommend Lagarith personally, though Iā€™ve zero experience working with it in any resolution greater than 1080p, and even that does require fairly large file sizes.

Resolve wonā€™t open AVI files. (though it will let you encode them). Strange but true.

No, I replaced Sanjuroā€™s source with the original prores master. I also replaced the crawl with the new 4K version and rendered it out at 77 MB/s to create a new UHD (NoDNR) version 1.1ā€¦

(Note: My version still has the reel change markers).
