Not only that, but according to Mike Verta’s analysis, some of the shots look as if there was so much color loss, that they were basically colorizing grayscale footage.

That analysis sounds interesting, do you know where I can find it?

Who knew the Star Wars fandom would be first to release the Star Wars OUT (or in any form for that matter) in 4K before Lucasfilm or Disney…

…probably most of us… ¬_¬

Sorry, should have included sarcasm tags 😉

Oh the irony of it all though 😕

Did they color grade the Blu from scratch, though? I thought they used the DVD SE masters as a base, and just fixed some bits and pieces.

In 2004 they scanned in the negatives at 1080p and graded them to that over-saturated-magenta disaster that we’ve been stuck with ever since. There may have been some tweaks in 2011 for the bluray, but the fact remains that all three movies were graded from scratch in 2004.

Having gone through the entire OT and PT frame by frame, when doing my HDTV releases, I can tell you that the only film with significant color changes for the Bluray was Episode II. (Of course TPM was a completely new master. 😉 ) Definitely not re-graded.

If I had some gum, I’d chew a hole into the sun…

I think what Williarob meant was that the 2004 HD master used for the 2011 OT bd’s was regraded from how the OT had ever looked prior to 2004.

Yes that’s what I meant. I had stated that the Blu-ray was not a good color reference because it was based on a scan of the negative which had to have a new color grade since negatives don’t have the theatrical color grade.

Then someone else disagreed, pointing out that the Blu-ray didn’t get a new grade - which I suppose is true- from a certain point of view 😃 - since it appears to have the same grade as the 2004 DVD.

However, since both Blu-ray and DVD come from the same 2004 HD transfer of the negatives, I standby my original statement that it is not a reliable color reference for how the film looked in 1980.

ESB was definitely changed color-wise, but it always struck me as the least manipulated of the three in terms of contrast. I’d be interested in getting people’s thoughts on that.

I still wonder what happened with the AotC bd.

What about the shots of Star Destroyers that have loads of crushed blacks?

Oh, I think the contrast and brightness of ESB was totally ruined in many shots on the official Blu-rays… just look at how moody and atmospheric (and awesome) the lighting is in echo base in any film-based preservation and compare it to the blu rays. There’s a HUGE difference and the incredible lighting is almost destroyed in many shots.

Oh would you look at that, I’m having a heart attack because of how beautiful those frames look now. Excellent work Dr. Dre!!!

One small thing, does Bespin’s hallway color lean more on red from your sources?

I don’t think it was the blu-rays, it think it was the SE. I think the blu-ray is a pretty faithful archive of the SE colors, just leaning to too much red/magenta.

Well, whatever point it was, at some point they brightened it up and screwed up the shadowy, high contrast, moody look of the film. I mean, look at the hallway shot of Han and Leia. The top is the bluray, the bottom is the grindhouse dreammastered. I’m not talking about the color grading. Look how bright and evenly lit the scene is on the bluray vs how dark and shadowy it is on the grindhouse. And all of echo base is like that. In the original film sources it actually looks like a poorly lit cave (which is what it’s supposed to be). On the bluray it’s a bright and cheery ice palace with no shadows.

Just curious, are the 16mm scans going to be released?

I saw 4K77 a week ago, and I have to say, I felt, for my small donation, it was priceless to watch something so caringly restored. It was like a painting, that had been cleaned and brought back to the state, when it had been originally painted. I’m amazed what they managed to achieve.

Loving the work, I’ve donated as well, not sure if you’ve met your budgeted amount yet but there’s another $20 towards it!

Can’t wait to see this one released.
