On the left is the new 4K scan in it’s raw state and on the right is the version on the ISO, as cleaned up by Skydude, who had this to say about how much work went into it:

"It was cleaned up (a lot) and stabilized/dewarped and CC’ed. Had to do some gradual color corrections (using an adjustment layer with a very wide horizontal feather in Ae) too as there was some sort of red light leakage coming from one side.

Also the letters and the stars received separate color corrections (using manual masking in Ae) as the print was very faded and pretty much everything was the same color. Also chroma keying of the letters was used for separation in one of the many passes."

In this video you can also see where the Eastman stock ends and the LPP stock begins. The original crawl on the LPP was in Spanish but the previous owner of the print spliced in an English version. Sadly, the Spanish version was not shipped to us along with the print, so we don’t know what happened to it). The LPP stock is unfaded, while the Eastman section has of course turned pink.

That is awesome, I didn’t know that the crawl on v1.0 was just a upscale! You all did an amazing job with these projects, pretty damn close to what hopefully the studios would give us

So is it worth downloading now. Or are people still needing to be convinced,
so they don’t waste their time getting it again. I hope this settles that issue.

I’m not sure if this is just me but I used one disc to burn 4k83 and another to burn 4k77. The discs I used were verbatim BD-R DL inkjet printable discs, the burner is the pioneer BDR-XD05B, and I used imgburn as the software. When I put these discs in my ps3 and my ps4, they are shown to be invalid. I’m not sure if this is just a problem with those systems or if the iso may be corrupt.

Aha. I compared the settings to the SSE project. 4K77 and 4K83 have a copy Protection setting on, while the SSE project does not. (This wasn’t deliberate, it must be the default setting, which I forgot I needed to turn off)…

Yes we can ignore this post, we can all appreciate this hard time and work you put into all of this, you did an amazing job with 4K77 and 4K83, I think it will be a real treat with 4K80, all your hard work will pay off and we are always be in your debt, thank you for making all of this possible

When I keep on looking at the crawls I noticed that the letters in the crawl, there is basically a blank space under the text and the letters appear much earlier than the final project, I’m guessing that it was cropped due to this problem?

The image on the left is mostly uncropped. It’s hard to tell because of the fading, but the frame ends at the bottom (where the text begins), then there is a space and then the top of the next frame. At the top of the frame is another space and then the bottom of the previous frame, though this was cropped out of the preview. Top and bottom were cropped correctly for the finished version on the right.

It’s not a problem. Films are never meant to be projected at full aperture/frame size. Every release made from a different master will have slightly different cropping for this reason.

I believe it was discovered during work on 4K83 that during some screen wipes, the uncropped frame size for one shot would even be different than the other. I’ll see if I can pull up that screenshot…

JEDIT: Here it is - look on the right side of the frame. It’s clear where the projection aperture was supposed to be - that’s why raw frames will always have more image on the sides/top/bottom than the final version:

Ahh okay, I didn’t know, i’d like to see the 4K83 shots from ChainsawAsh if he’s not too busy, and if I would film a movie personally I would film with 35mm, or 70mm IMAX, and then in Post I would digitally transfer it at full resolution, and done, but I don’t really trust digital because if it gets deleted, there is no going back, but 35mm frames can be damaged, but not as easily if it’s took care of properly, but I would shoot using film in my opinion

Has the issue with the iso been fixed?

Okay so I was able to play the movie on my TV via the external hard drive. It look incredible in 4k. Unfortunately when connect to the TV’s usb port, I the DTS Audio options on not available. I can only see the Dolby Digital tracks and the commentary options. Also, the default audio that plays when starting the video is the 1993 commentary. Is there any way to fix this? I specifically want to watch the film with the DTS 1.0 1977 Mono track.

A quick search of your model number turned up the manual, which sent me to go.roku.com/rokumediaplayer for a list of supported formats. DTS is listed, but it also specifically says:

Note: DTS-HD and lossless DTS are not supported.

So you’ll have to remux the MKV file with a standard DTS encode of the mix of your choice, or a Dolby Digital/AC-3 encode.

However, FLAC and PCM (.wav) audio are supported, so if you still want lossless you can remux your MKV with an uncompressed PCM encode or a lossless FLAC encode. I don’t have the mono mix in any of these flavors, but I’m sure someone can help you out with that.

Okay I installed Tsmuxer and opened the mkv file. I kept the mono track checked. How do I know that the output file will retain the same quality as the original?

JEDIT: ignore the post that was here, I was thinking of mkvtoolnix.

Okay, so tsmuxer should be used to demux the video into its independent streams. By definition, it doesn’t reencode anything - however, since you’ll be using this to convert DTS-HD to DTS, technically you’re going from a lossless encode to a lossy one, but that shouldn’t be noticeable in any appreciable way for the mono track. I think the only audio track included where this might theoretically have a noticeable effect would be the 5.1, and even then I’d be a little surprised if you said you could actually tell the difference.

So. If the DTS-HD MA mono mix has a standard DTS core (DTS-HD MA always should, but 1.0 is a weird format for DTS-HD MA, so it might not), here are the steps you should take:

  1. Open the MKV in tsmuxer
  2. Uncheck every track except the one you want (the mono mix)
  3. Select the track
  4. Check the box that says “Downconvert DTS-HD to DTS”
  5. Under “output,” click the “demux” option.
  6. Choose your output folder
  7. Click “Start demuxing”

You can also use it to split off the MKV video into an independent video file, but that’ll require you to have at least 3x the HDD space of the original MKV by the end of this if you don’t delete the original MKV after this step, which I don’t recommend. Just demux the audio you want, you can steal the video from the original MKV in the next step and you’ll only need a little over 2x the HDD space of the original file.

Anyway, when it’s done demuxing, you should end up with a .dts file. Next, you’ll need mkvtoolnix.

In mkvtoonlix:

  1. Open the original MKV file (“Add Source Files”)
  2. Open the .dts file that was output from tsmuxer (“Add Source Files”)
  3. Uncheck all the other audio options you don’t want - ensure that, at minimum, the video file (h265 or h264 for the 1080p version) and your DTS audio file are checked (you can keep any subtitle files or chapter markers, too). You might also want to set the language of your audio track to “English” - if you have multiple audio tracks included you might also want to set your preferred one as “default,” but it’ll be automatic if you only have the one audio track
  4. Set your output file destination (it’ll be an .mkv)
  5. Click “start multiplexing.”

When it’s all done, you should have a new MKV file with a standard DTS audio track that’ll play in your TV.

NOTE: If the mono track doesn’t have a DTS core (I don’t have it in my laptop’s HDD to check), this won’t work, but the 5.1 and 2.0 DTS tracks will almost certainly include a DTS core you can extract, so you’ll be able to pick the original 1977 stereo or hairy_hen’s 1977 six-track reconstruction to use if you can’t use the mono mix.
