STAR WARS: EP VI -RETURN OF THE JEDI "REVISITED EDITION"ADYWAN - ** PRODUCTION HAS NOW RESTARTED ** — Page 83

The ROTJ Blu-ray really bothers me. Not because of the changes, because I had kind of made my peace with the fact that stupid changes were going to continue happening. But because I felt it was handled the best in terms of color. Was it spot on? No. But it at least looked mostly natural. But then it had to be ruined by these long sections of out of focus scenes that made it just as irritating to watch as the botched color on the other two.

Force bless Williarob and all involved in 4K77, 4K83, and eventually 4K80.

kudos to you and 4k83, this is already a big step towards revisited!

A possible fix-
Vader has Luke’s lightsaber in his hand when he’s looking around for Luke under the Emperor’s dais.

And just to reiterate my suggestion about adding obstacles or consoles under the dais, as there is really no place for Luke to hide.

I hope (and honestly expect) so, the alternative makes your eyes and ears bleed D:

Yeah. Why Lucas would add it for anything other than glorified CGI testing for the prequels is far beyond me. Also, I came across this rough ROTJ SE end with different music. Just food for thought if neither Yub Nub nor Victory Celebration will be used:

JEDIT: Also, that shot of the gunners shielding their eyes needs to be replaced. And the core shaft matte needs to be replaced too.

He should never have left to begin with (gives an image of George Lucas a dirty look).

Looks great Ady, simply can’t wait to see ROTJ:Revisited when it’s done 😄

I love how these new scans of the OUT are being used to restore original shots, it looks so much clearer than using GOUT sources.

Not to mention pasting Hayden Christensen’s head from a ROTS dress test on the existing footage instead of filming Hayden wearing the costume is outright disrespectful to Shaw and his legacy. Great work.

Looks amazing and its as it should be. I have never been comfortable with the idea of removing peoples contributions from a film the way Lucas did. Did I miss Shaw? Not really but I certainly preferred him over Christensen. If I had been George and I was going to paste a random actors head in there for no good reason I would have done it with David Prowse. That would have been a good reason. Still WB Sebastian!

Am I way off, or did Adywan mention he was going to film the B-Wing cockpit scenes a couple months ago?

He’s taking his time. Sets need to be built.

If I recall that shot will take place during the funeral pyre scene, correct?

Yup, it will. Luke will be alone with the ghosts in the ending, foreshadowing TFA.

Hi, everybody!

Adywan, I have a humble suggestion for the Sarlacc. I agree; as the years have ground on, I also found it to not be terribly frightening. But the SE’s addition of that cgi beak was beyond awful. I actually laughed out loud when I first saw it! It looked as though Audrey II from “Little Shop of Horrors” was down there, trying to snatch people! It was utterly horrendous in how ridiculous it was.

My idea for making the Sarlacc more intimidating and menacing is the following: Similar to how you animated the facial features of the creatures in the cantina in ANH: Revisited, animate the Sarlacc’s mouth. Make it snap its mouth shut, make its gullet convulse and gulp. Show the teeth champing together, almost like a shark does. That, added with some suitable sound effects, would make it spookier. Part of the problem is that it was just a rubber hole in the ground. We need to believe it really IS a giant, hungry mouth!

And finally, I’d add a few more tentacles. I know it might be a bit tricky - depending upon how it’s done, it has the danger of looking a little hokey and/or unintentionally funny. But you also have the advantage of being able to see the movements of everyone else in the scene. Perhaps one or two shots of the tentacles taking a swipe at some of the figures fighting on the skiffs, grabbing at them? At least enough to suggest that they’re not entire safe up there - that’s all you’d need.

I’ve no idea how difficult it might be to do this. And you might have decided to go in a different direction altogether. But if you are still considering what to do with the Sarlacc, then that’s my two pennies’ worth for a suggestion.

Thank you - your work is nothing short of phenomenal!

“I… I can’t believe it…!”

“That is why you fail.”

I agree that the altered Sarlacc in the SE wasn’t all that intimidating, definitely more laughable with it’s obvious CGI beak.

For me though the original Sarlacc always did the trick just fine in seeing that gaping maw with backwards facing teeth that acted as barbs and tendrils trying to grab hold of anything that happened to tumble in. Though it was never the look of the beast that invoked fear and dread, it was the thought of accidentally walking over the edge of the pit (or worse, being directly thrown into the gaping maw by Jabba’s henchmen) and falling down the steep and unstable sides, sand giving way as you helplessly try to scramble from some kind of hold and slip literally into the dark stomach of a beast to eventually die as it begins digesting your body.

It was the thought of that ending as you looked into the bottom of the pit that was always more frightening that the little bit of the actual beast you get to see and the massive burp it makes as it swallows you whole. Much like how a black hole isn’t fearful to look at but the thought of the fate that awaited you if you fell into it was. The SE alterations definitely took away from this effect, almost becoming comical. In the case of the Sarlacc, less was always more.

Looking into some of the additional lore makes it even more of a undesirable end, apparently it would introduce neurotoxins into your body that would immobilise you while keeping you conscious and in constant pain. It’s even noted that some believe it absorbs it’s victim’s consciousness and is how it can inflict torment for millennia, much like C3PO alludes to in ROTJ.

Ady has mentioned wanting to reframe some shots, maybe that was just for the prequels, but part of the 720p end product is so he can use portions of a 1080p source if he wanted.

Indeed, and I agree that framing and digital panning will improve some shots.
But for lighting, the main problem is the BlueRay grading (the 4K scans don’t look that bad).
