Ok, so the Magnum Force US LD is in stereo, but it sounds like the main stereo element is the soundtrack. Mixed down to mono, it sounds very similar to the original mix, but with the soundtrack pasted over it essentially. Gonna sync this one as well, it sounds pretty good mixed down, in my opinion.

That sounds great.

I also am now in possession of a laserdisc of The Dead Pool. It is in stereo, but I can sync it as well just for consistency’s sake

Finished v2 of the Magnum Force Mono. It’s based off of the re-processed stereo release, but mixed down to mono. It’s much higher quality than the one I synced earlier and I’m happy with how it sounds.

Pm me if you would like it. I also have the re-processed stereo for fun/preservation sake

Synced The Dead Pool’s Stereo LD audio to the blu-ray. It is very similar, but the blu-ray adds some sound effects and there are small tweaks here and there. I also mixed the LD track down to mono just for fun. If anyone wants these audio’s let me know. I’ll be uploading them tonight

Surprised they added new effects thought it would be the same since it was originally Dolby . Makes me wonder if the rest of the Clint Eastwood stereo movies like the gauntlet were tinkered with. Ah well

Oh, I guarantee all those movies Clint Eastwood made had their audio tinkered with at some point. Malpaso made their movies on the cheap back in the day.

Also I have a laserdisc of Dirty Harry with similar faux Stereo to Magnum Force and a VHS of the Enforcer with it as well (that is in pretty much mint condition) so I’m gonna do a mono mix down and rip of those audio tracks soon, will keep you guys updated on that as well. I’m also gonna sync the rental VHS of Dirty Harry as well

I also now have the rental tapes of Magnum Force and The Enforcer. Unfortunately I won’t be syncing the Magnum Force tape for 2 reasons:

  1. The movie is sped up. Since Magnum is just over 2 hours, it probably needed to fit under 2 hours on old vhs tapes and CED. As a result the length is way off and the pitch of the entire soundtrack is higher as a result. So slowing it down and correcting the pitch would be a big drop in quality.
  2. The tape is in poor condition. I ripped the first 4 minutes and there are pops, crackles, snow, very poor shape.

The Enforcer however is pretty much mint in comparison. Some glitches on the end credits but that’s it. I can splice laser disc audio in if need be.

I also might make another thread about this entirely, but I have a widescreen laserdisc of Dirty Harry that’s somewhat open matte. The movie as we know it is 2.39:1. But this laserdisc is 2.20:1 and has more information on the sides and some on the bottom of the frame. I had no idea this version existed, and the colors are vastly different from any release prior or subsequent.

So, I got ahold of the Dirty Harry Laserdisc Collection. All the movies are in letterboxed Widescreen (except for Dead Pool which is fullscreen, open matte). All the discs are in good condition and have the 2.0 mix from the VHS tapes (original mono effects panned and stereo soundtrack) so those will be higher quality than my VHS tapes. I’m eventually gonna have (for the first 4) Mono Laserdisc Audio, Stereo Laserdisc Audio, and Rental Tape Audio (I’ll see what I can do with Magnum Force). The Dead Pool will have Laserdisc and VHS Audio, plus a mono mix down for consistency.

Can anybody send me DVD+Rs or BD+Rs of the Dirty Harry films? I’m a big fan but just not into the 5.1 remixes, so I’d love to be able to watch these with the original sound effects. I have a lot of stuff I can trade.

Ok, now that I have some more free time to work on these and a better capture card, here is what audio tracks I’m planning for all 5 movies (5.1 mixes will be included for reference/whatever), I’m gonna make burnable DVD flies with menus and such. Maybe Blu rays if I can get more MEGA space:

Dirty Harry:
-1983 Laserdisc Mono
-1979 Rental Tape Mono
-1990 Laserdisc Stereo
-1990 Laserdisc Mono Mix Down
-Tv Edit
-2008 5.1 Mix

Magnum Force
-1989 Japanese Laserdisc Mono
-1990 Laserdisc Stereo
-1995 Laserdisc Stereo (deletes a sound cue during first shooting)
-Mono Mix downs of ‘90 and ‘95 Stereo
-1987 Rental Tape mono
-TV edit
-2008 5.1 Mix

The Enforcer
-1989 Japanese Laserdisc Mono
-1995 Laserdisc Stereo
-‘95 Mono Mix down
-1987 Rental Tape Mono
-TV edit dubs
-2008 5.1 Mix

Sudden Impact
-Mono Laserdisc
-1995 Laserdisc Stereo Mix
-‘95 Mono Mix down
-1984 Rental Tape Mono Audio
-TV edit dubs
-2008 5.1 Mix

The Dead Pool
-1989 Japanese VHS
-1995 Laserdisc Stereo
-‘95 Mono mix down for the hell of it
-TV edit dubs
-2008 5.1 Mix

A note on the TV edits, I own all 5 of these movies’ TV edits. I actually have what may be the network premiere of the Dead Pool (recording is from 1993 so it’s damn close if not). I just finished my HD fan restoration of RoboCop so I have much more time to devote to these. Unlike RoboCop I’m not gonna be dealing with alternate footage (yet, maybe in the future), just audio. Dirty Harry and Magnum Force don’t have any funny dubs, but Enforcer, Sudden Impact, and Dead Pool do. These tracks will sync to the Blu Ray as well.

I was also able to fix up the audio from the Magnum Force Rental Tape. At the correct speed and pitch, it syncs up almost perfectly without any touching up, except for one obvious jump cut about an hour in during the Guzman scene as he’s walking back from the balcony. But once that was lined up it was easy. If I can find a better quality tape, it might be the definitive Mono version, since the JP laserdisc while closest to the original version, is missing some frames. There’s actually an old WCI “book” Rental Tape of Magnum Force much like the original 1979 Dirty Harry Tape, but it’s so rare that I don’t know if I’ll ever get my hands on it. I actually own the CED of Magnum Force (which is probably similar to the VHS), but I don’t have a CED player.

And in addition to the DVD folders, I will make all of these audio files available to you guys.

So, I’m not going to include the TV versions as alternate tracks. After going through them and even doing some rough test edits of just audio, there’s too much footage missing in all 5 versions. The longer movies (Sudden Impact and Magnum Force in particular are almost and over 2 hours respectively) are cut down to 90-95mins without commercials. Sometime in the near future I may do separate edits of all 5, but for these I’m going to focus on the mono/original tracks.

I finished Dirty Harry and it will have the following audio tracks:
-1983 Laserdisc Mono
-1979 WCI Rental Tape Mono
-1990 Stereo Laserdisc
-Mono Mixdown of 1990 Laserdisc
-2008 5.1 Surround mix from the Blu Ray (because it’s the most recent sound mix and for comparison purposes)

All of these tracks sync up to the Region 1 Blu Ray.

I finished the Dirty Harry ISO. It’s burnable to a 4.7gb DVD (ISO is 4.25 gb)
Here is a custom DVD Cover:

Next movie in the Dirty Harry Original Audio collection: Magnum Force

Audio Tracks are as follows:

-1981 Rental Tape. Oldest release with Mono I could get my hands on. Tape was time compressed so I had to slow it down. Strangely the music and sound effects are higher pitched but dialogue is slightly lower pitched. So I didn’t bother with any sort of pitch correcting. If I lowered the pitch, everyone has distractingly low and growly voices. All other tracks have the soundtrack at the correct pitch. Some VHS buzzing/artifacts in the first 5 minutes.
-1989 Japanese Laserdisc Mono. Missing frames consistently so it was synced almost line by line in some cases
-1990 Laserdisc Stereo remix. Contains original sound effects but panned left and right under the Stereo soundtrack.
-Mono Mix down of 1990 LD
-1995 Widescreen laserdisc Stereo. Mixed somewhat differently than 1990 LD. Missing a music cue when Ricca is shot at the beginning.
-1995 LD Mono mixdown
-Blu Ray Surround Audio, for comparison sake.

Wow! I’ve long wanted to hear at least the original mono for the original film but this going the extra mile! Currently I only have the LD and BD boxsets and despite the stereoization the LD 2.0 stereo tracks obliterate the new remixes. They’re largely mono with stereo score insertion but can pan to the sides at times as you mentioned on MF.

I’m interested that the LD reissue of MF sounds different as I thought all the individual releases were ports of the boxset discs.
