You shouldn’t have any problem downloading and transferring it to a flash drive as long as your hard drive isn’t FAT32 formatted (4GB file size limit). And the 1080p MKV (DNR or no) should play just fine from a flash drive on a Blu-Ray player.

A 4K version like this downsampled to 1080p will still look amazing because the source resolution is so high. I have a 75 inch LG UHD TV and a Cambridge Audio UHD media player (capable of reading this file off a USB, I might add), and 4K discs hardly look that different than 1080p to the naked eye in terms of perceiving pure resolution from a normal viewing distance. The best part of commercial UHD technology, IMO, is the expanded color gamut confered by either HDR or Dolby Vision technology, which these projects have not and cannot take advantage at present.

In my experience, there’s a barely perceptible difference in resolution between 2160p and 1080p (I have 30+ UHD 4K movies and have compared several with the 1080p releases); the most important factor is a high quality and high res source scan. That’s what I’m paying for when I buy 4K discs.

That’s because most UHD Blu-Ray releases are really 2k sources upscaled to 2160p. Compare the 1080p Blu-Ray to the UHD Blu-ray of something like Blue Planet 2 and you can really tell the difference. Plus you don;t really need a UHD media player. The LG UHDTV is able to playback the 4k77 file, and other UHD files, just fine via a usb stick/ external usb drive ( I have the 70inch HDR LG TV).

Not exactly, Adywan. I’m the kind of guy who researches every 4K release prior to purchase to see if it’s worth replacing my 1080p blu ray copy. If there isn’t a good reason (like a 4K source scan, improved color gamut, improved sound mix), then I don’t buy it. I usually use https://bluray.highdefdigest.com and a few other sites.

I mean, I notice a difference, but it’s pretty subtle in most instances, especially if I’m sitting at normal viewing distance and not pixel picking with my nose up in the screen. I will def agree with you about Blue Planet 2, though.

I like my Cambridge unit since it operates as a pure transport. It has an isolated circuit, as in it has no onboard DAC circuitry to interfere with signal. I rely on separate components for DAC, Pre-Amp, mono block amps, etc …

BTW, I’m a big fan of your work, Adywan. Your releases were regularly populating my disc transports for years!

Any word on a DrDre color corrected version on the DNR release?

Well, maybe. If connect directly to the TV I may not be able to change the settings anyway. Since my 4k TV is also a Roku TV, the remote is a Roku remote.

I’d be massively stunned if a Roku TV can’t handle playing an MKV file from a flash drive. Worst case scenario, it might not like the DTS-HD MA audio.

Maybe it can handle it. However, switching audio/subtitle settings around may be a different story with the remote.

Why does the remote matter? My remote is absurdly simple - it’s got arrow buttons, an Enter button, a Back button, a Home button, and a Power button. That’s it. The audio/subtitle switching is all handled within the on screen display on my TV when the video file is playing.

I guess my point is, why don’t you just try it instead of saying “what if it doesn’t work?” over and over on here for days on end?

I was able to author each version of the film to 50GB Blu ray Millenium discs using DVDFab’s Blu Ray Creator, which I happened to already own. They’re downsampled to 1080p, but they all look fscking phenomenal on my 75" LG TV. DVDFab recently released UHD authoring software as well, called UHD Creator or something to that effect … I’m considering buying that extra software and a few 100GB discs to try it out.

The sizes of the 2160p files on a USB was too much for my 2018 LG TV to deal with. Smaller 2160p files (such as the TeamNegative1 fanfare) played directly on the TV on problem, but it refused to play any big files (~87 GB). My Cambridge disc transport, OTOH, was able to interpret the Imperial Network by plugging the USB stick directly into the transport. Looks pretty damn close to the 1080p version for my money.

I’ll let you all know if I end up attempting to author the 2160p files onto 100GB discs, but considering how well the software handled the authoring of 1080p discs, I would assume it would work just fine.

Really? That’s bizarre. Was it that they wouldn’t fit on the USB (possibly because of FAT32 formatting instead of NTFS or ExFAT), or the TV didn’t recognize the files? Or did it start to play, then stutter?

My other thought would be that the TV doesn’t support h265, but that seems unlikely to me with a UHD TV.

I’d be more concerned about playback compatibility in UHD BD players than ease of authoring.

Because getting it done right the first time is priority. >:D

Okay, so Google your TV model and see what video and audio formats it can play. I’m sure there’s a list on the manufacturer’s website, or discussions on home theater forums that will answer your questions better than people here that don’t own your TV can.

Or look at your manual.

Or just put the damn thing on a flash drive, plug it in, and see if it works. It’s not like you’re going to break anything or waste a disc.

I downloaded the rar’s of the no-DNR 1080p of 4k77 from mega and used 7Zip to extract the files straight to a 128GB memorex usb stick.

After plugging the usb stick into my sony blu-ray player to check out the movie, I noticed a minor technical issue and a much bigger technical problem.

The minor issue was that the player isn’t detecting the signal as 24p for some reason. I am correct that this should be a 24p (23.976p) file and not 1080i60, right? Could this be happening because I’m watching it off the usb stick and the player can only do 24p from an actual disc?

The major problem was that the movie froze up right around the destruction of Alderaan. It actually locked up my player the first two times it happened and I had to unplug the power. I was fast-forwarding through that scene when it happened the first time, but that’s probably just a coincidence. The second time I tried chapter skipping and got the same result, had to unplug power again. The third time I just let the scene play, and it froze during one of the shots where Tarkin is walking up to Leia. That time I was able to press the home button on my blu-ray remote and exit the video.

Any advice on these problems would be appreciated.

Let me just say, from what I’ve seen of it so far, TN1 has done a magnificent job (I’m dying to see how the Battle of Yavin looks). If Lucasfilm never gets around to restoring the unaltered versions from the superior elements only they possess, it will still be a shame. But thanks to the dedicated efforts of loving fans, it won’t be a cryin’ one.

Seems likely to me that the combined bitrate of all the video and audio tracks at that moment chokes the player out. I’d try remuxing it with just the video and one audio track (and any subtitle tracks you want) and then try the new MKV.

As far as your 24p situation goes - that’s odd, but you might be right in that it doesn’t like to do 24p output from a media file versus an authored disc. I don’t have the no-DNR 1080p, but the no-DNR 2160p and DNR 1080p both play fine and in 24p from my TV’s USB media player, and the DNR 1080p works fine on my KDLinks media player in 24p.

Tried it again on my Roku Ultra and it froze up at the same point. The Roku auto-exited the file when it happened and said “cannot play video, file may be damaged or corrupted.”

The old pc I used to download the rar’s is way too slow to playback the 1080p mkv. I’m betting the 2013 macbook air could do it, although I’m open to advice as to which video player to use (vlc, quicktime, etc).

If the video still chokes halfway through the movie on the macbook, my only conclusion will be that the usb stick has some sort of issue. I’ve been told it’s probably not a problem with the rar’s since 7zip would’ve detected it when extracting the files.

Either way, I’ve given up trying to get the 35mm OOT together in time for the marathon, but that’s probably for the best since there’s a rather large drop in quality for the middle of the trilogy. Any chance 4k80 will be ready by this time next year?

Very unlikely as it requires a lot of work, unlike ROTJ. I think a couple members of the team have said at least two years is likely, but it’s not like anything’s set in stone.

I personally use both MPV and IINA, which is a Mac-only media player. I like IINA’s interface better but they’re both good. I’ve played the full 4K version on my iMac without any issues. Hope that helps. 😃
