Director's Cut?

It seems to me that the issue is as much to do with hostility to the Special Edition as with the original theatrical version.

Who would want the theatrical versions of 'Terminator 2' or 'Aliens' on DVD?

Mr Lucas needs room to manouvre. He may have ruled out the original version on DVD; but even the inclusion of "close the blast doors" (stormtroopers pursuing Han Solo) would constitute a director' cut.

i guess if i'm being totally honest, any time a filmmaker releases a "director's cut" that eliminates a theatrical cut I love, it bothers me a little. that's why I saved my Star Trek II original DVD to own alongside the two-disc "director's cut"--i love that movie and want all the versions I can get of it.

since I care so much about the star wars movies and the SE changes bother me more and more as time goes on, I guess I'm just more passionate about owning the original versions of those films. i like T2 and Aliens well enough, to use your example, but not owning the original cuts doesn't outrage me as much because I'm not nearly as attached to them.

plus, i can't think of another filmmaker who has undertaken the systematic and total deletion of his original works as Lucas has. releasing a director's cut on DVD is one thing--lucas' process (the SE re-release in 97, his many announcements that these are the definitive versions of the films while almost backhandedly slamming the originals, even further changes to the 2004 DVD release, few to no existing prints of the originals as seen on release) is a different animal.

Doesn't the current Aliens DVD allow you to watch either cut? (Not sure about T2.)

Where were you in '77?

There are two versions of T2 out (as far as I know) and both have both versions on them. Aliens as well, but I think its just the newer version.

Gentlemen, you can’t fight in here, this is the war room!

I'm not really a fan of either, but why wouldn't someone want the theatrical versions of T2 or Aliens? That's a much more important question, in my opinion.

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

For the record, the theatrical releases of T2 and Aliens are the director's cuts. James Cameron has said numerous times that the Special Editions are earlier edits of the films and he released them on home video to give the viewer an insight to the film making process.

I wish GL had felt the same way.

All those unfamiliar with C, he meant that GL is different than JC. And I mean James Cameron, not Jesus.

So, you're saying that George Lucas is different from James Cameron, but not different from Jesus?

Hmnnnn, no, uh... I think comparing filmmaker George Lucas with the Blessed Messiah Jesus Christ of Nazareth the Holy Son of God wouldn't be correct, hmnn, nope.

He IS one of the "volcano demons" from scientology though.

Scientology...Sheesh.
I was lucky/unfortunate enough to get tickets to the UK premiere of Battlefield Earth (through a friend of a friend). John Travolta was there and before the movie he gave a speech in which he attempted to explain the meaning of the film and what he and the writer/director were trying to get across. But he seemed well aware that whatever it was he believed and was trying to convey the film failed on so many levels and the speech basically amounted to an advance apology for what we were about to see. I have never seen Travolta in the same way since. On the plus side I got to walk down the red carpet past the crowds and photographers.
