I really had no interest in seeing this but since I’m a big fan of Peter Dinklage, I decided to give it a look. I was hooked after 15 minutes. This was very interesting. I remember Hervé but not much beyond his only two roles where he received any real notoriety. Super-stardom more like, and it clearly took its toll on him, as did his early life in Paris.
The story is true and the director of the film is the reporter in the story. He went to a great deal of trouble to tell this the way it happened, not pulling any punches. The story of bringing it to the screen is also interesting and they touch on it briefly near the end of the movie. The director’s attention to detail and authenticity is extremely detailed, particularly the last thirty minutes. To explain that, which I saw in an interview with him, would be a bit of a spoiler so I’ll leave that part out of this review.
I’ve seen Dinklage in a few things and he’s always at the top of his game. He can do dark, serious, comedy, on screen and in theater. As a fan of his, this may be his finest hour. Unbelievable performance. I’ll be watching this a second time for sure.
