Yeah, it’s definitely too bright.

I’m sure it will get further tweaks like other releases.

Thanks to the everyone involved with bringing this to fruition.

Now onto the apparently long wait for 4K80.

Wow! Just wow.
The detail is amazing. I love the fine grain structure. Thank you so much for all your hard work.

I have some questions about the colors. How accurate are they? I got used to harmy’s grindhouse release of ROTJ and prefer his colors. Is his to saturated? Also, the lightsabers often don’t have the bright white core I came to believe they originally had. Is this how they originally looked?

I assume that they didn’t change any of the colors aside from compensating for color fade. Still the best this movie has ever looked and sounded!

I’m sorry to say it, williarob, but it might be as simple as a levels issue.

Top: before
Bottom: after ColorYUV(levels=“TV->PC”)

N.B. I don’t think that the standard adjustment works well for the whole film (at least not for the blacks), but it definitely gets the levels in the right ballpark.

If anyone has a MEGA link 4k83 that they could send me, it would be greatly appreciated:)

Yeah, blacks look a bit crushed to me. But some improvements could be made.

In many shots, the whites are blown out after ColorYUV(levels=“TV->PC”), too, so it’s definitely not a straightforward levels problem. I’d say that the luma range has possibly been compressed a little while the video was (already) in the TV range, which has the usual effect of making it look a bit too bright and somewhat undersaturated.

Yeah, I played around with some MPC-HC screenshots and it’s not as simple as capping it at 16-235, and it’s not as simple as a reel-by-reel universal adjustment, either. It’s a shot-by-shot thing.

Here’s one of the shots I toyed around with in Photoshop. Just a simple curves adjustment, though I did adjust each individual channel separately, but nothing fancy at all. Just clipping either end in each channel, really.

The Bonus features are up on Myspleen also. From Star Wars To Jedi (HD from 16mm) Classic Creatures (HD from 16mm)
Trailers and much more.

I’m currently still downloading it, taking me a tad longer due to me using reslio.

Seems like leaving it a bit brighter was a deliberate choice to stick to a reel-by-reel grade to preserve the print as is without crushing the blacks - found this quote from ohteedee while going back though the project discussion thread on the 4K83 forum, from September 17:

There is room at the bottom to darken but not in every shot. Space is not the darkest areas of the film, believe it or not. Is it okay to slightly crush some areas to improve it overall? Some will say yes some will say no. As it is there are a few shots in each reel that are slightly clipped at the bottom already. I’m resistant to darken much more but I’ll re-evaluate it.

I have issues with the color, but overall it is a fantastic preservation. Definitely an issue with the whites being too bright and overall a lack of color saturation. And some of the colors are really off. Isn’t Oola supposed to be green?

Watched this in 4K. IMHO this is easily the best I’ve ever seen Jedi look.

I have a favor to ask. Would anyone be willing to share screencaps of all of the Jabba’s palace subtitles in 4K, like two or three different frames per subtitle, so that we can account for dirt, etc? It would be great to have 4K sources for the burnt-in alien language subtitles. PM me if you’re interested in doing this.

Project Threepio (Star Wars OOT subtitles)

On binsearch the 4k version is showing as 14.21gb and the 1080p as 48.61gb… That can’t be right, can it?

Author

No, the 4K is around 69GB, if I remember right.
