At the request of some folks over at the Star Wars Trilogy forums, here is a proper thread to comment on the release of 4K83.

Only watched the 1080p version so far. It looks beautiful.

It’s a bit late to get early access since it’s out in the wild now.

Which stereo audio track should I be listening to?
Ie which is currently the highest quality audio track for a 2.0 stereo system?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                              Audio Information
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Track 01.............: 2.0 DTS-MA (1983 35mm Optical Audio (from this print)) Eng
Track 02.............: 5.1 DTS-MA (5.1 mix 2018 version (new for 4K83)) Eng
Track 03.............: 2.0 AC3 (1993 LaserDisc audio (new for 4K83)) Eng
Track 04.............: 3.0 AC3 (1993 LaserDisc audio Commentary (new for 4K83)) Eng

Audio Track 1 is the stereo optical audio extracted from our primary 35mm print using a
35mm optical reader and Dolby decoder. Mastering by schorman.
Audio Track 2 is a new 5.1 audio track, mastered for this release. Mastering by hairy_hen.
This 5.1 mix is only suited for 5.1 systems. For 2.0 systems use one of the stereo
   tracks for greater clarity.
Audio Track 3 is the 1993 LaserDisc stereo audio. Mastering by schorman.
Audio Track 4 is the 1993 LaserDisc audio commentary. Mastering by schorman.

Some alternate audio is provided in an Alternate Audio folder for you to mux in as
desired.

All audio provided is synced to 4K83. Thank you hairy_hen and schorman.

Track 03 is probably the ‘highest’ quality, but Track 01 is very high quality as well, it only has a few audio glitches.

As far as the 35mm optical track, the recording was excellent as far as sync. It turned out to have only a single glitch across the seven reels of the film, a single repeated frame worth of audio at about 1:08:12.

Ugh. I HAVE to get a new laptop. Mine is well over a decade old. I still haven’t even been able to watch 4K77 properly yet and was only able to download it thanks to the very generous efforts of a member on the starwarstrilogy forums.

Great job getting this accomplished everyone. I eagerly look forward to the day I’m able to watch it.

Two down, one to go. Very well done guys!

Are there FLAC encodes of the laserdisc PCM audio synced to 4K83?

Yes but they haven’t been shared openly. I only added the ac3 versions to 4k83.

I’ll be sharing these soon over at thestarwarstrilogy.com. I just haven’t got around to it yet. 😃

If I had some gum, I’d chew a hole into the sun…

Is 1080p available at “MEGA download”? If so, will the 4k83 ver. soon be available at MEGA? Thank you.

It might be cheaper for people to get a new Bluray player, and one that
can accept USB drives, than buying new computers or laptops.

Really how one should do it. That’s how I watch all my star wars stuff, aside from some of the fanedits that have been burned to dvd.

I need a new laptop just to acquire and manage the files. My current ancient POS can’t handle them (and I can’t do things like use Resilio or other programs that would be much more convenient than begging someone to set up a special link just for me). It can barely handle downloading the 1080p files (and you can forget about actually playing them on it!)

Plus I need a new laptop for other things too. Just been waiting a very long time for a raise that is finally in the works.

Looking forward to this! The optical print audio is nice to have and sounds great, but I’d still like to pair a laserdisc-sourced PCM of the 1983 mix with this.

Wow, they far surpassed my expectations with this one. Good work, can’t wait to watch it.

Wow! Just wow.
The detail is amazing. I love the fine grain structure. Thank you so much for all your hard work.

I have some questions about the colors. How accurate are they? I got used to harmy’s grindhouse release of ROTJ and prefer his colors. Is his to saturated? Also, the lightsabers often don’t have the bright white core I came to believe they originally had. Is this how they originally looked?

Author

Yeah, I’m not sure if it’s actually too desaturated or the black level and/or contrast is too low - I actually turned my TV’s brightness down a ton and it looked significantly better with no crushed blacks (the letterboxing was still the blackest part of any given frame by far), and it seemed to bring out the color a little more. For 4K77, I didn’t have to change any settings at all on my TV, though I was occasionally tempted to turn the brightness up, the exact opposite of how I felt with 4K83.

I’m really looking forward to a shot-by-shot CC with reel change markers painted out.
