Ranking the Star Wars films — Page 162

Strange that I grew up with both the original and special editions. First half of my life (being born in 1990) was with the original cuts (mostly ROTJ…I didn’t see A New Hope completely from beginning to end til the special edition in 1997). The second half (mostly the 2000’s) was with the special edition. Now it’s just the original cuts.

Despite ROTJ being my favorite, it did suffer more with the changes. Vader’s “no!” was the worst change imo.

YUB NUB!

My problem is that over the last few years prior to TFA I read complaints EVERYWHERE about the lack of originality in the movie industry, then along comes TFA, which is another unoriginal movie, and people are perfectly fine with it.

You must live in a different universe than I.

Rogue One
Bland and uninteresting. Also irritating fan service and a way too epic final battle.

You know that’s strange because that’s exactly how I’d describe Solo, save for the “epic final battle” part. I loved Rogue One, but Solo is my least favorite because it’s a checklist of Han Solo getting things we know him for (and they still managed to leave out the vest, somehow) that ends up feeling soulless and forgettable, despite being a passion project of the screenwriters. The bland color palette (which RO is admittedly also guilty of) and bad lighting don’t help.

I will never understand how or why the copy-paste job that is TFA is so highly ranked.

I wonder if most of the people who liked TFA didn’t like TLJ and vice-versa. After all, everyone seems to agree about the narrative whiplash of the two being so radically different. And they’re not just different; they’re polar opposites. One’s derivative and predictable while the other goes out of its way to be unpredictable.

If you liked every movie but one and that one was still mostly okay, I can’t imagine why you wouldn’t at least like [Solo] at a minimum.

Well I also at least enjoyed every movie until now, but couldn’t enjoy Solo.

I love both Force Awakens and Last Jedi and they both seem to work together in my brain. Nothing in last Jedi actually contradicts the ‘text’ of Force Awakens except for maybe Luke’s saber toss.

The Force Awakens has a fair share of new things it brings to the table. I love the “hunt of skywalker” angle, because the audiences wants to meet the original cast too so we are instantly onboard the heroes journey. Finn as a treacherous stormtrooper was great and Rey had a mysterious backstory (contrary to Luke) which got me invested for future installments (they have now abandoned that in favor of short-term shock and long-term “let’s route for villain because he’s got more development” syndrome). When faced with the insane task of topping Vader, they realized they couldn’t and did something even better: create a villain actively trying to be like Vader.

The droid is a bit repetitive but it has a different context. My only real complaint is Starkiller- cut the planet killing and it might have earned the #2 spot on my list.

The Last Jedi presents some amazing ideas but overall is sloppy and just not fun. I go to Star Wars to enjoy myself. If this were an anthology (like a Logan for Luke) people would be more lenient. While I don’t “hate it” it lands at the very middle of my ranking, between Solo and RO.

Ever heard of measurements?

Don’t be such a smart ass. The way you wrote it is unconventional, if not wrong.
What you meant, I presume, is 1-1/2 and 3-1/2.

I didn’t recognize what you wrote as such until just now, either.

But also, it’s a rank order, so why use half-measures anyway? That’s also unconventional, adding confusion.

Why should I conform to your conventions? That and people do use halves in lists, ala Lion King, Lion King 1/1/2 and Lion King 2. Usually, you see point number but I decided to do the unexpected.

But 1/1/2 doesn’t look like ‘one and one half’ should. It just looks like 3 numbers in a row.

If markdown was any good we wouldn’t be having this conversation.

I’m not telling you to conform. I’m telling you not to be a smart ass when you don’t and people don’t understand you.

Also, lion king 1-1/2 is called such because it was made after Lion King 2 was already out.

When I saw Solo, Rebels, and Ewoks at the bottom with a gap after them, I assumed that was the bottom of the list, but no, you actually consider all of those things five star and better than the Prequels and even The Clone Wars. Do you just have some fundamental issue with that era? Even still, it doesn’t explain the high rankings for the three pieces of garbage I mentioned at the start. And even after putting Ewoks at five stars you put droids only at two? I mean, I haven’t seen either, but I would assume the quality would be roughly equal.

Eyebrows need raising otherwise we’d all fall asleep from boredom ;P

Here is my list based on Snooker’s “canon enjoyment” format with some slight revisions:

  • Any novels listed are ordered based on how I feel I would enjoy them as a movie adaptation.
  • Games are listed separately due to how differently I enjoy them versus movies, such that it doesn’t make sense to me for them to be in the same list.

MOVIES
-SW, TESB & ROTJ (film) - While TESB is undoubtedly the best, I enjoy all 3 movies equally as one complete saga.
-R1 (film) - After additional viewings this is now my favourite Disney era SW movie.
-ROTS (film) - “Dark Force Rising” edit by Kerr
-TPM (film) - “Anti-Cheese” edit by Jeremy M West
-AOTC (film) - “Anti-Cheese” edit by Jeremy M West
-Heir to the Empire Vol.1 (novel)
-The Last Command Vol.3 (novel)
-Dark Force Rising Vol.2 (novel)
-TFA (film) - “Restructured” edit by Hal9000 (unfortunately this movie has tumbled down my list thanks to TLJ)
-TLJ (film) - Likely Ivan Ortega’s edit, will probably still hate the movie though…

GAMES
-Star Wars Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II (PC)
-Star Wars Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcase (PC)
-Star Wars Episode I: Racer (PC)
-Star Wars: X-Wing (PC)
-Star Wars - The Empire Strikes Back (Amiga)
-Super Star Wars (SNES)
-Star Wars Battlefront 2015 (PC)

I recently rewatched all of The Clone Wars animated series to get ready for the new season. Afterward I decided to put in Revenge of the Sith to see if I could keep it going. There was an immediate sharp decline tolerability levels. I couldn’t even get through the opening space battle. So goofy.
