The Motion Picture (1979) is much better than people make it out to be imo. I know the cinematic universe kicks in better with Wrath Of Khan, but TMP is that middle ground between TOS and the films.
While I find both official versions of TMP incredibly boring at points, I wholeheartedly agree with this. The main thing is the opening score and Kirk’s introduction. TWOK is ominous, but TMP is grand, and I think that’s important to bring the series to the big screen. Showing the shuttle come into Starfleet Headquarters, and playing a cue of the theme which is simultaneously grand and sentimental as the camera lifts to reveal Kirk’s face; it’s just perfect. Kirk’s intro shot in TWOK is certainly more visually striking, but as I said, it’s ominous, not grand, or even sentimental.
The Motion Picture and The Final Frontier are the two Star Trek films I’m going to fanedit. They often get the short end of the stick, and with good reason, but beneath all the extraneous fluff, they’re more than decent films.
