I am writing a story but I am a bit stumped on a plot point. Basically, an evil spirit opens up a portal between dimensions and manipulates/tricks a race of creatures into attacking mankind. The thing is, later on in the story we find out that these creatures are actually good, smart individuals, in fact they are more mentally and spritually evolved than us, but if that is the case, why would they allow themselves to be tricked into a war? They are basically Yoda-like in their way of thinking, and I can't see Yoda embarking on an attack on a whole civilisation on the advise of another person, even if that person is a powerful and convincing spirit. So does anyone have any ideas? The creatures need to attack, it's a key part of the story, but the reader also needs to retain sympathy for them later on and understand that they are not to blame for their actions. I considered having the spirit possess them and control their bodies during battle, which seemed to solve the problem, but then I thought why doesn't the spirit just possess the humans in the first place instead of possessing the creatures to attack the humans...
Anyway, not sure that made sense, but any ideas are greatly appreciated.
Thanks in Advance
