And seriously? Presidential Alert? The ego of this guy…

https://www.businessinsider.com/r-trump-administration-to-send-us-cellphones-a-test-alert-on-thursday-2018-9

Former President Barack Obama signed a law in 2016 requiring FEMA to create a system that lets US presidents send cellphone alerts regarding public safety issues like natural disasters and “terrorism.”

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/10/03/us/presidential-alert-trump.html

The test, originally planned for last month but delayed by Hurricane Florence, was the culmination of many years of work. The federal government developed a system to issue the alerts, which are scripted in coordination with numerous government agencies. They are limited to 90 characters, but will be expanded to 360 in the future.

Trump didn’t personally send a message to your phone.

If we start getting non-defeatable political propaganda messages forcibly coming through our phones, then we’ll know we really are living in a dictatorship.

Any bets on how long before that starts happening?

I’ll take that bet. What’s the timeframe? If Trump is reelected, he’ll be in office until January 2025. I’ll bet we don’t get any propaganda forced to our phones using this system by then.

How does $1000 sound?

I’ll bet my new racing pod against, say… the boy and his mother.

No pod is worth two slaves, not by a long shot.

Not yet. 😉

And I get that it was named before Trumpy took office. Remains to be seen if people will more willingly flee a hurricane because they get a text versus all the warnings given on tv.

Trump is obviously an erratic moron with no grasp on the limits of his power, so I wouldn’t be surprised if he thinks that he can use it as his own personal propaganda machine. I think that the “adults in the room,” as the insider put it, would not allow that to happen, so I doubt that we’ll get any of that shit in the next couple years.

I compare it to the Amber Alert thing already in use, and it will likely get similarly used/complained about/ignored.

But with the added political intrigue, we can add denial/truther responses to the mix, which have been thankfully lacking from Amber Alerts.

Or at least I think so. Now that I think of it, there probably are people who think Amber Alerts are a cover story for secretly shipping kids off the the pizzeria. Ugh. Nevermind.

Amber alerts have been around longer than cell phone alerts. They turn up on freeway traffic condition signs out here anyway.

And wow, something implemented under Obama that Trump isn’t wishing into the cornfield!

Most likely Trump has had absolutely no part in this thing. I bet it’s just government inertia since it was passed a couple years ago.

From my understanding, it came from government regulation in 2015 that this would have a test every three years, and 2018 just happens to be that three year mark.

This whole “issue” is proof that people want to be outraged and will remain willfully ignorant in order to do so.

I’m more annoyed actually. 😛

In any case, the technology exists now. Hope it’s safe from hackers.

I don’t think it’s really an “issue,” it’s just something mildly annoying that people are poking fun at because of the test today. It’d have had a similar reception if the test had happened while any other President was in office.

Trump’s penchant for Twitter just makes it a little easier to make fun of.

I had a dream (or nightmare, if you prefer) last night, that Kavanaugh was confirmed. I was surprised it had happened so quickly after his hearing. I’m glad it was only a dream, I was convinced for quite awhile that it had actually happened.

But it had made me think, what’s stopping them from confirming him now?

The remarks about propaganda in this thread didn’t read like jokes to me. We’ll have to agree to disagree that the reception would’ve been the same with another person in office.

It wouldn’t have been totally the same, but mostly because

If that person was Trump’s predecessor, the usual suspects would be saying it’s nefarious for the usual reasons.

A blog I frequent posted some jokes that made me laugh, here are the tamer ones:

TROPICAL STORM ALERT: Tropical Storm Candace threatens Alabama.

Storm looks totally disgusting, no class at all!

TRAVELER WARNING ISSUED FOR TURKEY: Chatter from terrorist groups suggests plot to kidnap Americans.

I know some Turks. Great friends of mine. They always tell me, “You’re so smart, your hair is so golden and lustrous, everyone says it.” Terrific people.

Not so great at hand-washing, though. THIS MUST CHANGE!

The blue elephant in the room.

It depends on the person. If Obama did this, then conservatives would be up in arms. It happened with Trump so the other people are up in arms.

Probably true.
