The 2001 roadshow was spectacular.
But was it real?
I don’t get it.

I would put this in my sig if I weren’t so lazy.

Of course!
I would put this in my sig if I weren’t so lazy.
I saw Terminator 2: Judgement Day in 3D when it came out around this time last year as well as BTTF 1/2 when my local cinema ran them back to back.
Just saw 2001 on the big screen, which was heavenly.

75mm? Saw that earlier this summer. Was… amazing.

Unfortunately no, it was a DCP, but still very nice.

Tickets purchased to see 2001: A Space Odyssey in 70mm IMAX later this month!
This happened the other day and it was nothing short of magnificent.
I should stress that I was most certainly alive for these two (as I saw them multiple times in their initial release), but within the past week I saw The Dark Knight and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban on the big screen, the former in IMAX 70mm. Good times (especially The Dark Knight which is one of my favorites and absolutely breathtaking in that format).
The guys in that Dark Knight thread would definitely appreciate your recounting of the colors of that print.

Is there a preservations thread? I will say it looked like a slightly older print. Not a lot of damage, but it seemed a little darker and greener than I remembered. Granted, last time I saw it in theaters was ten years ago, but I saw it three times then, and once on IMAX 70mm.

Not feature length, but last night I saw Michael Jackson’s Thriller in IMAX 3D. Pretty fucking cool.

How could “The Dark Knight” have faded already. It is not that old. And wouldn’t it be preserved digitally? Colors don’t fade on a digital copy of a movie.
Well, first, he saw a print that would’ve been made back on 2008, not a digital copy. Second, Christopher Nolan doesn’t like digital, so he tries to keep his stuff film-based as much as possible. Third, the original BR release of TDK had a lot of problems, and color was one of them; the recent 4K UHD restoration (which went back to the negatives, meaning the color would have to be retimed) didn’t come with a 1080p copy of the new restoration, and there is, of course, controversy in the film community about the color timing choices of the UHD restoration anyway.
Goodness, I’ve seen a lot. Doubtful I can recall all of them but I’ll do my best. Many were during the very fortunate few years when I lived in Minnesota and could visit The Heights theater in Columbia Heights north of Minneapolis. It’s a beautifully restored single screen theater built in 1926 (with chandeliers and a working Wurlitzer organ that they often open shows with) that plays TONS of classic movies, in 35mm if at all possible. I’ve also been fortunate enough to have access to a few Alamo Drafthouses over the years that show lots of classics.
Forbidden Planet (35mm at The Heights)
King Kong (1933) - twice (35mm once at The Heights)
Gojira - twice, DCP
Gentlemen Prefer Blondes - at The Heights with a Marylin Monroe impersonator in the lobby for photo ops!
Godzilla vs The Smog Monster (twice, G-fest & Alamo Drafthouse. I think both were 35mm but maybe DCP)
Lawrence of Arabia (DCP Alamo Drafthouse)
Singing in the Rain (DCP Alamo Drafthouse)
Godzilla vs Monster Zero (35mm Alamo Drafthouse)
War of the Gargantuas (35mm Alamo Drafthouse - double feature with Monster Zero above)
The Wizard of Oz (35mm as a kid)
Raiders of the Lost Ark (at least 3 or 4 times. Not sure of all formats but most recent was DCP at Alamo)
Jaws (DCP at Alamo Drafthouse)
Super Inframan (35mm Alamo Drafthouse)
The Sound of Music (35mm The Heights)
Fantasia (assuming 35mm, theatrical reissue when I was a kid)
Pulgasari (vhs projection at Alamo Drafthouse. This movie was made by Kim Jong Il! He kidnapped the director! It’s nuts! Look it up)
The Thin Man (35mm The Heights)
Scarlett Street (35mm The Heights)
Harakiri (35mm at The Trylon, a tiny arthouse theater in Minneapolis)
Batman (1989 - DCP at Alamo Drafthouse - the only one on the list that I actually was alive for its initial release. But my parents deemed it too violent for my six year old self…)
I know I’m forgetting at least a few I saw at The Heights and maybe a couple from the Alamo Drafthouse, but this is the best I could recall off the top of my head. Oh, and if you count them, I guess the OT SE’s theatrical run.
JEDIT! AH, HUGE JEDIT!
I don’t know HOW I forgot this one, but reading previous posts reminded me:
Creature from the Black Lagoon 35mm 3-D!! It was at some other old theater whose name I forget in Minneapolis the weekend of Halloween!
Also:
Planes, Trains and Automobiles (DCP, Alamo, week of Thanksgiving one year)
The Last Man on Earth (35mm AFI Silver Theater near D.C.)
The Stranger (35mm AFI Silver)
And I think I saw a DCP of Ghostbusters at Alamo Drafthouse once, but I can’t remember for sure.

I have the original BR release, I never noticed the issues with color timing. What other issues does it have?
Excessive DNR and oversharpening resulting in heavy edge enhancement halos in the 35mm scenes, which was also an issue for the original IMAX prints if I remember right.

my DVD has the same color timing as my bluray. huh, i thought it’d be different for some reason.
They came out at the same time so likely used the same master.

So you are saying the issue was there when it was in the theaters?
As of now:
Bladerunner Final Cut (1982/2007)

Murder on the Orient Express (1974)
Charade (1963) *

I’m Mr. Know-It-All.
Here’s a clue… Grab the spinning rings. It’s important. As long as you’ve got the rings, you’ll be okay, even if
you hit any hazards. Now you know.
Oh, and don’t worry if the
view suddenly changes. It does that sometimes. Just keep moving in the direction you want. It may take a little time to get used to it, so keep trying.
Very envious of that list.
Why? You can make an even better list. All you need is a keyboard which you clearly already have. It would make much more sense to be jealous of the contents of the list.
I forgot to mention in my list above that Gentlemen Prefer Blondes was an authentic 35mm technicolor IB print. It was GORGEOUS!
