Original Thread Title: JAWS 2 - Extended Edition - Video Sources Needed

Original Post:
I’ve been chiseling away at an extended version of JAWS 2 that we can all watch on our modern 16:9 monitors. Currently I have these sources:

  1. Personal Recording - an LP speed VHS recorded off TBS circa 1991. Looks decent, except for some wavy frequency noise in the image. I can filter this out still retain a fair amount of detail. A bit handicapped by the LP speed - didn’t quite max out the potential resolution a VHS can offer, but still not bad. Inferior to a SP recording but superior to EP.

  2. Homemade DVD-R (3.94GB) - This is the one that was shared on myspleen and demonoid. A later recording off TBS. Decent quality. MPEG-2 Artifacts and a lot of detail has been filtered away. The plan is to stick with my personal recording and use this to mask out the reoccurring TBS logo.

  3. Brazil TV Recording - Low quality mp4 from a marketplace trader in Brazil. Has unique footage not in the US-TV cut.

  4. Official Blu-ray and DVD - has a few deleted scenes in 2.35:1 widescreen

My plan is for the presentation to all take place inside the standard 16:9 frame at 1080p. The 2.35:1 and 1.33:1 footage will remain as-is - no cropping of either. I’m firm on this. Yes, not a perfect solution, but preferable to further cropping IMHO. Here’s a proof of concept using the deleted underwater helicopter attack sequence: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dYbT8ddiBP0

How you can help -

  1. I would like additional VHS recordings of the US TV Cut. My 2 sources are adequate, but I would prefer a higher-quality SP recording. If nothing turns up, I’ll use what I have.

  2. Same with the Brazil version - I would prefer to get high quality transfer off the first VHS release by CIC in Brazil that unknowingly featured this longer version. It’s very rare and has yet to turn up on eBay since I first started looking out for it.

  3. I need a translator for the few exclusive scenes in the Brazil version. We’ll include those with English subtitles.

Thanks for looking! 😄

I would definitely love this once you’re finished. I will see if I can locate any of the sources that you mentioned that you are looking for.

What are the scenes exclusive to the Brazil version?

Jaws 2 was the first movie to introduce me to ‘TV edits’. When I bought the VHS, I was disappointed at the scenes that were ‘missing’. Great character scenes. For not wanting to do the movie, Roy Scheider gave a great performance. I just wish they went a little deeper with Brody’s PTSD and paranoia

You can see the scenes from this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KcThHFiR3s8 Side note: I’ve reached out to this youtuber and offered to produce a new transfer from his official CIC VHS. No response so far.

Exclusive to the Brazil version are:

Hendricks and Red (the old man) deploy divers, who recover the lost divers’ camera.

A slightly longer take of people complaining at Brody’s office. The US TV version shortens this a little.

Additional shots of the helicopter pilot struggling underwater - this corrects the rough audio cut you hear in the US TV version. It’s what you see as 1.33:1 footage in my proof of concept: https://youtu.be/dYbT8ddiBP0?t=1m37s

JAWS 2 was also my introduction to the world of “TV edits” 😃 I shared the same disappointment when I later saw the theatrical cut. Still a bit miffed that Universal overlooked the extra deleted scenes when they produced their supplements for the DVD. They clearly have an old letterboxed video master of the US TV cut. Hopefully their 35mm prints of the footage haven’t faded.

I did something similar a while back, extended versions of JAWS and JAWS 2 that match the TV edits - but without the cuts to violence and language.

My versions are fullscreen VHS-quality with the original mono audios. I never did upload them as they were a personal project only.

Being a fan of the JAWS films, I have wanted to see the old TV edits get an official home video release.

I viewed your test video, I don’t think I’ve ever seen the extra shot of the pilot struggling with his harness before, it looks like a different take to that used in the extended TBS cut of JAWS 2?

Very nice. I’m sure many would like to see your efforts (me included). What source did you use for the TV footage?

And the extra shot is from the Brazil version. I always wondered why the audio transition was so abrupt on the US-TV cut and now we know it’s because that little section was cut out - I guess pacing reasons or television time constraints?

I used the deleted scenes from the DVD’s and off-air recordings (JAWS ABC & JAWS 2 TBS TV edits) for the unreleased material.

Viewing the TBS expanded JAWS 2 again, I got the impression it may have been identical to the Brazilian videotape in its additional content, but cut back for the television broadcast?

The intro for the Police Station, the recovery of the skin-divers camera and the underwater attack on the helicopter pilot have been edited - or (camera recovery) completely omitted.

Slavicuss - I think you’re right about it being cut down from an english version that was otherwise identical to the Brazilian version.

Small Update - My personal recording appears to have been a sped-up broadcast by TBS. Still visually superior, but very frustrating trying to extract the correct frames out of the signal. Interlace patterns are all over the place. I performed a QTGMC extraction of the footage, but I don’t know if I can find an automated decimate filter that can lock onto it.

So this is the first deleted scene from the TV Version - presented from my personal copy, and from the DVD-R. I’ve tried working through the speedup issues on my copy and have something fairly presentable now. The DVD-R doesn’t have such issues. I’ve applied similar cleanup to both. Wanted to get some opinions on the footage - I’m a bit split.

The image looks clean enough - better looking than my copy. A pity about the station ident. My copy has the “TBS” translucent watermark, placed at the bottom right-hand corner, throughout the film.

Thank you for having a look. I take it you didn’t see any major issues with the motion?

The good thing about the logos is that I can match the shot well enough and still use that other recording to patch it out since the logos are on opposite sides.

Is your TBS copy from the aforementioned DVD-R (3.94gb) that made the rounds years ago?

Author

I didn’t notice any issues with motion/frame rate. It looked fine.

I did a trade with an online collector a few years back, my copies of JAWS / JAWS 2 are part of his/her “THE WORKPRINT COLLECTION”.

Finally found a method I’m pleased with regarding motion. In the words of Spielberg “I could still see the jerk”.

Involves QTGMC to produce a 60p copy, finding a decent setting on MultiDecimate and then go through each shot frame by frame to remove remaining duplicates. I compare it to a IVTC’d copy of the lower quality DVD-R to make sure the frame match is dead-on. Thankfully these tv-only deleted scenes are short, so I don’t have to go insane doing manual removal. I will hopefully have a test copy in a week or so.

JAWS 2 / Tiburon 2 -Deleted Scene - Divers Recover Camera (Portuguese)

As things stand now, this will be the most unusual addition to the presentation.  Rare deleted scene from the Brazil version.  Anyone here speak Portuguese?  I’m thinking of including it with subtitles.

Believe it or not, the appearance of this is an improvement over the original mp4 source - low quality over-the-air recording circa late 80’s/early 90’s, compressed with low bitrate.  This footage can be improved if we can find the first CIC VHS release from Brazil.

Author

Are you going to include the extended Police Station footage? The scene starts earlier than the TBS television edit. There’s dialogue there that also needs translation.

Author
Time

Yeah I will. It looks like there’s a way to combine the theatrical cut with the TBS version that requires only a little from the Brazil version. I haven’t started putting it together yet, so there may be some unforeseen issues.

Thank you digitalfreaknyc! That’s my personal VHS recording (LP Speed) from the early 90’s - probably recorded when I was about 6 to 7 years old (JAWS fanatic already, like any good child of the era). It’s incomplete - we started recording it a few minutes after it started.

It’s funny - it was a Sunday morning and my mom stayed home from church because she wasn’t feeling well. So I went to church with Dad and my Sis, while Mom recorded JAWS 2 for me and paused on the commercial breaks (sometimes missing a second of the movie as it restarted). But during Marge’s death scene, she paused it for some reason - maybe protecting me from such a traumatic moment? So it had this really bizarre edit that somehow made the scene even more troubling to me. About a year or so later, I found another broadcast and pulled up my tape to that scene waiting for the moment - then I hit record and recorded the whole remainder of the movie. It wasn’t perfect but it captured the missing horrifying moment! My first edit I guess? 😄 - - After my father’s stroke, my parents eventually lost all of their property and I had to go in and salvage a lot of family history. This old JAWS 2 recording was in one of the many boxes I recovered before the property was foreclosed. So it’s special in many ways.

Back to the recording itself - as I recently discovered, it’s actually a sped-up TBS broadcast and that’s why I had so much trouble performing an IVTC. I now went to the trouble of running it through QTGMC to produce a 60p copy, running it through multidecimate, and then going through and removing the remaining dupes and reintroducing frames that multidecimate might have axed. It moves even better now than the version you watched. See it here along with the raw DV capture: https://mega.nz/#F!anIg3YgL!dhX8cj-rCMIG13R90iWpHw

This may all be moot though - I was just contacted by a very gracious collector who owns the Brazil CIC tape and will send it to me. It’s PAL-M format (29.97i fps like NTSC, but with PAL color). It’s possible that tape may have even better quality than my copy.

Almost PAL everything is sped up. 😃

Wait. PAL VHS wasn’t sped up??

Not sure which part you’re referring too - sorry, I can be a bit long-winded.

The Brazil tape is in PAL-M format: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PAL-M

“It is unique among analog TV systems in that it combines the 525-line 30 frames-per-second System M with the PAL colour encoding system (using very nearly the NTSC colour subcarrier frequency), unlike all other countries which pair PAL with 625-line systems and NTSC with 525-line systems.”

So hopefully the Brazil tape won’t be sped-up since PAL-M uses the 525-line 29.97 frame per second. And hopefully my deck can play the format. If not, I’ll have to find another solution.

If you’re referring to my TBS recording - it’s NTSC but it’s time compressed (sped-up) by TBS.

If the Brazil CIC videotape is good enough quality (and providing it doesn’t have edits to it), why not replace the Portuguese with English audio? You will still have the problem of translating a small portion of deleted material (extended Police Station/camera recovery). The positive is you won’t have to worry about miss-matching video quality, colour correcting or different aspect ratios for the additional footage.

Author

You will be pleased to hear that I’m planning on doing just that - with the original Portuguese track and alternate synced English track. The Brazil tape is just too rare and it would be a huge missed opportunity not to. Might do a largely untouched Standard Def version and a HD upscale with 35mm grain plate and careful cleanup and modest sharpening like my deleted scene examples.

The widescreen version will continue as-is. The 4 deleted scenes presented in non-anamorphic 2.35:1 from an ancient video master are upscaling better than expected. This is largely thanks to avisynth filters that reduce the baked-in sharpening halos. The scenes still stick out like a sore-thumb, but I like seeing them in widescreen with proper IVTC, cleanup and upscaling. Also to note - they are presented in better quality on the DVD. Whoever oversaw their addition to the blu-ray extras performed some kind of awful deinterlace job - destroying the ability to perform IVTC.

So check this out, give me some feedback 😃 These are all my cleaned-up deleted english scenes and their original sources. The cleaned-up scenes are compiled in 3 different flavors:

  1. High Bitrate x264 mp4
  2. High Bitrate x265 mp4
  3. Lower Bitrate x265 mp4

And the original sources are contained in the following folders:

  1. “TV Version Deleted Scenes” for my raw 1.33:1 DV captures
  2. “Universal DVD Deleted Scenes” for the raw, non-anamorphic 2.35:1 scenes

Feel free to be nitpicky and to try to improve on my work if you’d like. Getting these right is the most important thing.

In the meantime, we wait for the Brazil version. The owner is looking into the price of shipping it to me vs getting it transferred locally. The good news is, he confirmed the tape is actually NTSC - so I wouldn’t have to buy any new equipment.
