Because it’s the PT, whole scenes were cobbled together in post production.

Oh they definitely had a reason. It’s diningenuous to call it a mistake but these things catch your eye. Especially when the floor flops too.

Doh! I didn’t spot that. I was looking at the object between them that doesn’t reverse. Very strange.

I swear I never noticed the transistors that came out of Vader’s arm before!

Also you can see the Aurabesh on his control panel. I think it reads “alarm clock”.

That seems better suited for the Episode IX thread to be honest.

Does anyone else think that Han, Luke, and Chewie shooting so many things on the wall in the cell-block shootout kind of disrupts the excitement and pace of the scene? It’s always bothered me and I don’t mind them doing it, but it seems weird how much time they spend shooting so many of those alarms and cameras and things when there are other imperial officers still alive in the same room.

I think it’s part of the plan, such as it is. All anybody monitoring would see (if they were paying attention) is Chewie breaking loose. Then Han gets on the intercom to further delay anybody coming up to investigate. Some of those greeblies being shot at on the walls always struck me as wall lasers or possibly tear gas vents some kind.

It seems to have a moveable central eye.

Even if Han having served in the Empire isn’t in the back of George’s mind at that point, Solo would know what to take out first in attempting a jailbreak.

The comic book clearly explains they’re pretending to shoot at Chewie while blowing up the cameras and such.

Okay, that definitely makes sense, but from a pacing standpoint I always thought that the amount of things on the wall that they were shooting broke up the action a little too much.

I agree.

There may have been editorial needs for that pacing, depending on what was shot and how much footage there was for Marcia Lucas and her editing team to work with.

Are you implying that that scene led to the divorce?

Egad, no! I’m speaking to the way a movie is cut together. Empire Of Dreams talked about how the film was edited after that less than stellar rough cut done by different people. It’s easy to forget 40 years on how frenetically paced Star Wars really was compared to other 70’s films.

That’s another thing Rinzler’s Star Wars book goes into to detail with. The editing process was crazy, and it really was the final step that made the movie into the phenomenon it became. Because of the editing, the story, the sets, the effects, wouldn’t have mattered if the edit hadn’t worked. The editors definitely deserved the Oscars they got for working on that film.

I know, I was kidding. That’s actually a pretty good point. I’d never considered that before, but it wouldn’t surprise me if that has something to do with it. It would’ve been a really short shoot-out if those exploding wall ornaments hadn’t been in there.

Maybe it was too fast as originally conceived? Star Wars films need multiple viewings to absorb everything as it is. Would be an interesting editing experiment to recut it without the inserts.

maybe just take a few of the shots out? syncing it to the soundtrack would be a pain, though.

I wouldn’t worry about the sound for the moment. IIRC, some shots with the inserts cheat where everybody would be as they are still moving. An old school editing trick I’ve seen in other films.

I realised the other day that Vaping is canon in Star Wars.

I don’t know what to do with this information.
