'Dirty Harry' - with original mono mix (see kchrules' posts) (Released) — Page 2

kchrules, you rule! no rush with the audio.
That’s a nice comparison. Funny to see how different editions have different gate weave to them, while blu-ray is more stabilized, and looks somewhat sterile, compared. It made me dig up old chewed up VHS (recorded from TV some 25 years ago) and a clunky VCR. The machine worked but the tape is near gone, I managed to get a few glimpses enough to confirm my memory tricked me - the titles are indeed white and positioned just like the '83 LD but I noticed very different pan&scan in some shots, most notably when Harry is putting the envelope in his pocket - he’s more to the right of the frame, then when he’s reading Scorpio’s note stuck to the antenna - the shot is all the way left revealing just the tip of his nose, until it pans right just a second before he says “Jesus”. So there it is, variations galore.

Studios could get weird where title sequences on widescreen movies are concerned when they reached home video. Squeeze the original so no text gets cut off, but make the actors look thin, or use a textless version intended for making foreign release prints with no thought to matching the style of the theatrical titles. I know on my old pan and scan Raiders Of The Lost Ark LD you can tell it’s video generated text over the opening footage, which doesn’t look like the original theatrical lettering.

In the rare instances a title sequence was letterboxed in early home video or on tv, artwork would be used to conceal the black bars.

Maurice Binder got so fed up with seeing his intricate James Bond title sequences get mangled on tv, that he would create separate 4:3 versions in the Roger Moore era.

Raiders looks like it has the same font though it does lack the black outline on top of the white lettering and obviously sized differently to accommodate the 4:3 image.

The 1999 Fullscreen VHS and 2003 Fullscreen DVD have the opening and closing credits in widescreen so the original logos are retained.

This reminds me of something strange with Jaws. The 1980s VHS as well as the Discovision release has the credits in the same size and font as the widescreen version albeit they appear somewhat small in the 4:3 image while the 2000 Fullscreen VHS and DVD and 2005 Fullscreen DVD have the credits a bit larger but squeezed in to accommodate the 4:3 (like Raiders above).

Oh, man, I hate to be the pain in the butt…

But it looks like you have some severe lossy compression in the lineage here. It shouldn’t look like this from good analog recording. Or you are somehow recording the Dolby Surround track instead Analog mono, idk…
It should go all the way up to 22kHz.

it is quite possible that the spectrogram is 100 percent accurate. Some audio sources don’t go above 16khz (it all depends on the source material)

Successfully synced the mono audio from the laserdisc to the current region 1 blu-ray. Here are a compilation of clips synced with the blu-ray:

Message me if you would like the audio file. I also have a 2gb MKV of Dirty Harry with the mono synced if anyone would like that too.

Ok, I just finished Magnum Force. It was way harder than I thought. I had to go through scene by scene, sometimes line by line of dialogue to sync to the blu ray. However, I’m happy with how it turned out. Will be posting sometime tomorrow

Message me If you would like The Enforcer. I don’t have a LD of Sudden Impact. So when I get paid I can look into that. I do have the VHS though, so I’ll see what I can do with that. I made custom blu ray covers for the first 3, they are pretty basic:

Ripped my Sudden Impact VHS. It has the Mono sound, but it’s older and used so it has some buzz and audio artifacts. So I’m not gonna use it. Luckily I found a sudden Impact LD for cheap on EBay so once it comes in the mail I’ll rip it as well.

I’m surprised how good the mono is on the enforcer . Some decent dynamic range in the gun battles . Subwoofer got a bit of use too. Didn’t need a 5.1 mix

Yeah, I love how the ending scene in San Quentin sounds in mono. From doing these first 3 and listening to both mono and 5.1 at the same time, the most damning 5.1 mix is Magnum Force in my opinion. The sound effect they added when Charlie McCoy is shot in the head is so laughably bad. It sounds like he was shot with a paint ball. Also aside from the 44 Magnum sounds they kept, all the new gunshot sounds are so bland in comparison to the mono ones. The Magnum Force mono is so raw and rough around the edges, it fits with the cheaply-made movie so well. I prefer the Dirty Harry mono any day of the week, but I’ll be honest, its 5.1 doesn’t sound too bad with a good sound system (soundtrack especially), I just wish they kept the sound effects the same.

Getting my hands on the US Magnum Force Laserdisc. It’s reprocessed “stereo” so if it’s mixed down to mono, it might sound the same as the JP mono, and possibly higher quality. I’ll let you guys know

Ok, so the Magnum Force US LD is in stereo, but it sounds like the main stereo element is the soundtrack. Mixed down to mono, it sounds very similar to the original mix, but with the soundtrack pasted over it essentially. Gonna sync this one as well, it sounds pretty good mixed down, in my opinion.
