'Dirty Harry' - with original mono mix (see kchrules' posts) (Released)

Hi guys,

I can’t seem to find one Dirty Harry DVD with the original english mono mix. Some mono mixes are included but of the foreign tracks only.

Anyone knows if there could be a LD audio rip out there? Cause I’m pretty sure this was the original mix on Laserdisc.

In fact this goes for all the films. They all seem to have been remixed in 5.1 with the original english mixes now gone.

I thought along similar lines. After checking, The US widescreen LD is not mono. Only the Pan and Scan LD has analog mono.

Seems another to add to the list of missing mono tracks.

Is the US widescreen LD stereo, or DS? If it is, that is another of those lost mixes. The DVD and Blu 5.1 misses some music elements in some parts like when Scorpio is on the roof over the church in the park.

I nearly bought it once, but the lddb lists it as a Prologic encoded matrixed stereo track.  I've waited to see the film in it's entirety because I wanted to find the mono track. Nothing other than early LD, VHS or Beta seems to have mono.

This is not like how they redid Fistful of Dollars is it?  I hated the new 5.1 mix it was crap.  The only time i ever got to hear the real mix was on some fan edit or something that recobbled the original Italian cut and mono mix of that cut in Italian as well as English.

There's got to be a widescreen LD with the original mono track on it out there - I used to have a taped version of it.

I have those two titles on LD:

Dirty Harry

Dirty Harry collection

The first has a Stereo Dolby Surround encoded and Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtracks, AND a mono soundtrack onto an analog channel... maybe this one could be the "lost" mono track, or simply a downmix from the DS or DD one?

Sadly my projects are lost due to an HDD crash… 😦 | [Fundamental Collection] thread | blog.spoRv.com | fan preservation forum: fanres.com

I got the collection box. The first film is stereoized but this practically makes it expanded mono with the stereo score in full stereo inserted. Impressive dynamics but very distracting, and there is also some tape damage.

According to the labels 2 and 3 also got the same treatment.
This was the widescreen debut of the sequels…and they felt it a good idea to remix the mono in he big collectors box…go figure…

This is something that also bothered me when I watched the Blu-ray for the first time. I didn’t even have to listen very hard to realize they screwed something up.

Apparently changes were made to Magnum Force

No they made the gun sound like his Magnum even though he was not shooting his magnum.

How many differences are there anyway. missing music in the park what else?

They may have changed the sound of that .38 in airplane scene (and I don’t mind, because I always thought it as a mistake, not a creative decision), but what puzzles me is that they changed the sound at the end of opening titles, after the “do you feel lucky” line. I clearly remember it being the trademark .44 Magnum sound before Blu ray came along.

Sudden Impact is also stereoized mono. I had no idea, but I guess they stuck with mono for the production.

In terms of original mono, I believe I have the theatrical mono of both Dirty Harry and Magnum Force.
I have the original Rental Tape of Dirty Harry from 1979, I believe it has the Mono, albeit not great quality. I also have the 1983 Pan and Scan Laserdisc, which might have the mono as well but higher quality.

Here is the Japanese laserdisc of Magnum Force. It has burned-in Japanese subtitles, but has English audio. I also I have the Japanese VHS, which is the same as the laserdisc.

somebody on youtube said any gun in the hands of Callahan becomes a 44 magnum. sounds bs but kind of interesting theory though
would like to see that sound replaced if anyone does a LD rip of the audio.

What about Magnum Force opening title? Does it have a .44 sound when the gun shoots at the camera at the end?

I’d be interested in both Dirty Harry and Magnum Force mono tracks if you can rip them.

Yes, the 44 magnum sound is there at the end of the opening titles. I don’t have a myspleen tracker account, but I have the Magnum Force LD, Dirty Harry VHS and LD on my MEGA account. Will upload the JP VHS as well soon. I don’t know if we’re allowed to share links on the forum but I can PM them to you and anyone who wants them

Thanks for the links once again, kchrules. These rips have too compressed audio - aac @ 192 kbps. Is there a way you can record uncompressed .wav at least from the two LDs?

One peculiar thing I noticed: - the font. I guess it was done separate for Pan&Scan LD but I’ve never seen opening titles with white lettering! What I remember (although not 100% sure now) being shown on TV in former Yugoslavia had opening titles with completely brown lettering, like the word “Dirty” on VHS here. I always thought they changed that to yellow with drop shadow only for later DVDs but now I see that 1979 VHS had the same thing 😃

Yeah, I can re-rip the audio at some point. Hopefully within the next week.

Also yeah, the opening titles got changed for almost every release. The original TV version (which I also have) has the same white/baby blue titles. So it’s probably based off of the same master as the Laserdisc. I made a video that compares 4 versions that I own. The recent blu Ray and 1992 vhs have the theatrical yellow titles (albeit the VHS has them very scrunched), the laserdisc has the blue titles, and the 1997 full screen DVD has completely different titles. Kind of styled like the blueish white titles of the laserdisc but yellow with a black shadow:

Studios could get weird where title sequences on widescreen movies are concerned when they reached home video. Squeeze the original so no text gets cut off, but make the actors look thin, or use a textless version intended for making foreign release prints with no thought to matching the style of the theatrical titles. I know on my old pan and scan Raiders Of The Lost Ark LD you can tell it’s video generated text over the opening footage, which doesn’t look like the original theatrical lettering.

In the rare instances a title sequence was letterboxed in early home video or on tv, artwork would be used to conceal the black bars.

Maurice Binder got so fed up with seeing his intricate James Bond title sequences get mangled on tv, that he would create separate 4:3 versions in the Roger Moore era.
