OT: I need help figuring out how to re-author a dvd...details inside

I know this is off topic but you guys/girls are the most knowledgeable group on the net!

So here goes:

I have a bittorrent VIDEO_TS file of an old 60's cartoon (Space Ghost) from myspleen. The quality is quite good but my only complaint is that all of the episodes are out of release order. I would love to rearrange the episodes to the original release date and reseed it.

I am a total newbie, so I don't know where to start. Also I am on a mac, so please advise accordingly.

TIA

Do you know anything about DVD structure? Do you know if each episode is a separate film, or if they are one continuous file?

MeBeJedi: Sadly, I believe the prequels are beyond repair.
JediRandy: They’re certainly beyond any repair you’re capable of making.

MeBeJedi: You aren’t one of us.
Go-Mer-Tonic: I can’t say I find that very disappointing.

JediRandy: I won’t suck as much as a fan edit.

That is a great question! But alas I have no idea. How would I find this out?

Remember I am brand new to this...Just thought it would be fun since I am not working right now.

Do you have iDVD on the mac, or something better?
Author

yes i do but I have not used it.

What would be better?

I also have final cut pro...

Bear in mind that television networks often air shows out of sequence. so air dates might not be the correct episode sequence.

That might be true today but I am pretty sure that was not true in 1966. I might be wrong.

I have this same collection, though I've never really cared about order, so I can shed some light on it. To answer MeBeJedi's question, the episodes are structured all in one continuous file.

You know, this would be a piece of cake on a PC. You could use either Womble MPEGVCR or ShrinkDVD and have it done in half an hour. I'm sorry I don't know the equivalent programs on a mac, can you commandeer a PC from somewhere?

How on earth would you do this in DVDshrink?

You know of the rebellion against the Empire?

Author

Easy. Open the video_ts folder as files on your hard drive. Click the reauthor button and either export the episodes individually (if they are on there correctly in their separate episodes) or chose to specify start and end frames to export the episodes one at a time. Once they've all been exported you can reimport them all in the correct order, export again then burn.

Thanks for the info. I didn't know DVDshrink could import and export like that.

Yup, cool eh? The best thing abut using this technique is that you can specify not to re-encode the video, therefore no quality degradation.

I mainly use version 3.2 and I couldn't work out how to do the start/end frame thing either.

I dug out the older version 2.3 and there was the button with this option.

I am going to go play now........

v3.2 is fine. All you do is:

1. Click the re-author button.
2. Browse to the files you want to re-author.
3. Drag and drop from the right pane to the left (or maybe double-click to add I think).
4. Right click the files in the left hand side and choose to select start and end frames.

Viola!

I'm writing this from memory coz I'm on the work PC so it may not be exact, but that's the gist.

Depending on the structure of this particular DVD however, that may not even be necessary. You might just find the chapters are listed independently and it'll just be a matter of ordering them correctly.

boba feta - many thanks for that wee tutorial.................

I have just taken two clips out of the "TB Release" Episode 1 DVD (DVB recording of the Theatrical/VHS version) and posted them here.

It is so simple when you know how!!!!!!

That looks perfect but I am on a mac.

My options that are similar are mactheripper and dvd2one. Not sure if they can do that.

But at least we are getting somewhere and someone else has learned a few things.

You could always fire up virtualPC and run DVDshrink
or

virtual pc runs like crap even a dp 2.0.

I am waiting for the new intel version from apple so I can run my OSX and keep a windows os on the same machine for just these occasions. Could be a few years though.
