cause OUT would be a huge market for the streaming service so it would affect the Streaming Experience

(I am not saying OUT wont be released it now has 99% chance of being released thanks to the merger also it will be Legacy as Star Wars)

Yeah, there’s zero evidence beyond what Mike himself has said that it “will” be Legacy.

It might be, but convincing yourself it “will” be is setting yourself up for disappointment.

Legacy is great, but I’d be hoping for something sourced from better materials than release prints.

Anyway, no-one at Lucasfilm seems interested in the OUT, the merger with Fox would solve some distribution problems, but it doesn’t give any real change to the motivation of Disney/Lucasfilm to embark on an OUT restoration.

I hope that changes, but there seems zero interest within Disney to do it.

if they’d only hire you + mike + rob + dre + ohteedee + harmy to work with scans of negatives to rebuild the original films in 4k frame by frame, shot by shot, reel by reel…

the community will probably have to use whatever the next revamped/restored version they release to retail as a source for the next generation of preservation projects.

It would definitely remove a lot of red tape. Star Wars would now entirely belong to one entity instead of being split up.

  • Fox Fanfare for all movies (why not add them to the sequel trilogy as well?)
  • OT restoration and distribution.

But the final word is up to Lucasfilm or Disney.

My cynical side tells me they’ll just use this as an excuse to remove the Fox fanfare from the one remaining holdout, ANH (or as I usually call it “Star Wars”).

Hopefully, they never dare do that to the Indiana Jones films, as the dissolve from the Paramount logo into the prologue is a signature of the series!

On top of that, if they got criterion involved, the preservation would be just 👌👌👌 flawless

I can live with the 20th Century Fox logo gone from Star Wars.

But this is just offensive.

Under the arrangement, Disney gains distribution and marketing rights to future films, in addition to retaining the ownership rights it secured when it acquired Lucasfilm.

Paramount will continue to be responsible for distribution of the first four films in the franchise and will receive a financial participation on any future films that are produced and released.

I can’t. The fanfare was written for Star Wars specifically, and it belongs in the film.

Uhm, wrong? Even the recording of it found in the movie itself is from the 50s.

DAMN I was very wrong about this. The actual story is that the Star Wars Main Title was composed in the same key as the fanfare in order to match it. I thought John Williams had also composed the fanfare; somehow I confused myself somewhere along the way.

Regardless, the point stands: the SW Main Title was specifically written to follow the Fox fanfare; therefore, the fanfare should stay in place.

I always thought the main title followed beautifully on from the Fox fanfare. Interesting to hear that Williams composed the title theme with that in mind! I agree that the fanfare ought to stay in place; any of the OT films without it would somehow feel incomplete.

I always heard that the extension of the fanfare (the part that plays over the lucasfilm logo) was written by Williams for Star Wars, but that fox liked it so much they continued using it. Is that not correct?

That’s the Cinemascope fanfare extension first used in the 1954.
https://youtu.be/zu1Fh-eFfMg
It was only used on Fox films actually shot with Cinemascope lenses. The use of Cinemascope had declined by the 1970’s, and Star Wars actually used Panavision. Star Wars brought the fanfare extension back and it eventually became part of the Fox opening for all it’s films.

According to Wikipedia, Williams re-recorded the fanfare for Empire Strikes Back and his version was used in the subsequent Lucas-helmed Star Wars movies.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/20th_Century_Fox

Incidentally, it seems that the “slanted 0” 20th Century Fox logo originally designated Cinemascope as well. Do we know why that particular version of the logo was used in Empire Strikes Back but not SW or ROTJ?

I once had an AFJ video where I attached the intro to ANH to the late 1970s Columbia logo with Suzanne Ciani’s fanfare… xD

Because the logo was redesigned in 1981.

Star Wars has the same logo as Empire. However, some video releases in the 80’s used the updated Fox logo from '81.

This is from my 35mm print of Empire.

As for the Fox Fanfare, it was written in 1933 by Alfred Newman (not Alfred E Neuman of MAD fame) and the fanfare was extended when CinemaScope was launched in the 1950s. It hadn’t been used for a while, and was out of use by 1977, but George Lucas requested it be brought back for the release of Star Wars.

John Williams re-recorded it in 1980 and it was used on all subsequent Star Wars films, and if you buy a soundtrack, it is the John Williams version you will hear.
The big note you hear when the enormous STAR WARS logo smashes onto the screen is in the same key, B-flat major, and was designed to come in off the back of the Fox fanfare.

So yeah, it is very attached to the Star Wars franchise.

I’m a huge music nut (especially when it is John Williams) but I didn’t know this, even though it makes total sense. So cool!
