"Oh, Thank the Maker!"

I was listening to my Limited Edition NPR Trilogy recordings on the way to work today. And in the scene from Empire Strikes Back where Han is frozen in carbonite and Lando confirms he survived the process. C3PO says, "Oh, Thank the Maker!" after hearing Han did survive. I think this is the same as the movie. But this is odd if you think about it now. Anakin/Darth Vader standing there, actually BEING C3p0's "maker". Unless you think the droid is refering to something spritual...meaning a God-like force and not the force referenced to in the movie. I assume he is talking of his own "maker"...being young Anakin (in the ATOC novel Shmi puts the metal on top and finishes c3po). I just thought it was weird, I wonder with what we know now if Vader would've been chuckling himself after c3po said that. Very odd.

It's a "spiritual" reference (basically because GL couldn't write stuff like "Thank God" or "Jesus!", because those christian references do not exist in the SW universe). C3PO utters the same line on ANH, when he is "cleaning" himself at Luke's home.
“Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.” — Nazi Reich Marshal Hermann Goering

although it is spiritual phrase, I do think it was meant to refer to 3P0's actual maker, which at the time of the classic trilogy was probably not meant to be anakin.

Actually, I believe that Luke whispers or mouths, "Thank God" in the shot directly after escaping from the fireball (in the shuttle escape scene at the end of ROTJ). It's not well known, though, and I don't believe it's actually in the script.

And I still think that Palpatine's "Order 66" is a reference to 666 in the Bible. Coincidence? Maybe...but there were a lot of numbers to choose from- why that one?

I think it is a little of both ideas on the subject. For a droid to say "Thank the Maker," is a spiritual thing, and for a droid their creator is about as god-like as they come. Remember though, even though Anakin created C-3P0, 3P0 doesn't remember that who created him since his memory was wiped in episode III.

3po wouldn't but Anakin/Vader would, hence why I thought Vader might be snickering to himself at the irony of that comment.

I always thought the "Thank the maker" line was just a little bit of humor since it's generally a spiritual reference, but for a droid it wouldn't be. Obviously, it wasn't referring to Anakin at the time, but the joke remains the same.

assuming Vader
a) saw and recognized C-3PO (remember, he's in pieces on the back of Chewbacca)
b) heard the comment (and even if he did, 'a' would still have to hold)

remember he's setting up a trap, how much attention do you think he was paying to things not directly related to the trap (besides just making sure they didnt try anything)

what i did find to be a nice touch (even though im not the biggest fan of having the droids in the PT) was when Anakin arrived at the Larrs homestead and threepio greets him refering to him as the maker.

Why Anakin really turned to the dark side:
"Anakin, You're father I am" - Yoda
"No. No. That's not true! That's impossible!" - Anakin

There's an easy answer to all of this:

C-3PO was never built by Anakin. Just erase that from your memory banks. It never existed. Why George Lucas decided to do that in the PT is beyond me, but in the words of Chefelf: "I will not accept that fact that Anakin built C-3P0. I won't do it. You can torture me in a scene reminiscent of the finale in Braveheart and I will cry out 'Freedom!' rather than admit to this horse shit. Anakin simply didn't build C-3P0, end of story."

What’s the internal temperature of a TaunTaun? Luke warm.

Since C-3PO's mind has been wiped, he isn't concieously thanking Darth Vader, but I'm pretty sure it is a refference to his physical builder, which ironically is Anakin. It makes for some good retroactive humor in the OT at least.

Personally, I think that Anakin rebuilt Threepio from parts he found. So Anakin isn't so much the maker, but rather the rebuilder.

One has to ask though, how many gold C-PO droids are out there?

Well, I don't think he was PROGRAMMED by Anakin, but that Anakin took old parts he found and put them together, and found an old droid CPU and stuck it in Threepio's head. Granted that's reading between the lines a bit, but it's more likely than a 9-10 year old writing the program for a sentient being.

I was watching Discovery HD the Science of Star Wars and C3PO and R2D2 were the hosts. They talked about master Anakin becoming more machine than man as Darth Vader. He then stated that he was the one that built me. Later in the show he said the "oh, thank the maker!" quote again. Granted this is not the movies, but I thought it was funny given this thread and the timing of the show, that in this show apparently a mind wipe wasn't a factor. He knew vader was his maker and what anakin had become and still called him master anakin. He even said there is always some of your maker in you (the robot). Which I thought was kind of dark comment given what anakin became. C3PO as vader's henchman hmmmm............

He'll be the best droid villain since General Grievous!!! Well, let's hope we can do better than that.
