Terrible DVD/Blu-ray Cover Art — Page 28

That’s not a very aesthetically pleasing photo collage…

And in the time of greatest despair, there shall come a savior, and he shall be known as the Son of the Suns.

Arguably that Criterion cover should be in the “flawlessly awesome cover art” thread and certainly not in the “terrible” thread. There are soooo many really and truly terrible covers out there like:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/OVER-TOP-MOVIE-Gary-Conway/dp/B00BQ7GX66/

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Star-Born-Judy-Garland/dp/B002SFOWPY/

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Fredric-March-Adolphe-Menjou-Gaynor/dp/B073BHZHMZ/

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Clear-Day-You-Can-Forever/dp/B000U5CBY8/

https://www.amazon.co.uk/A-Star-Is-Born/dp/B018WJS34K/

^ The last one isn’t even Judy Garland on the front, it’s not anybody, just some clip art of a random woman FFS! (This is also the cover Amazon Prime have decided to go with for the movie).

VIZ TOP TIPS! - PARENTS. Impress your children by showing them a floppy disk and telling them it’s a 3D model of a save icon.

It’s Janet Gaynor, the actress from the original A Star is Born (1937).

What’s the problem?

I have high standards for Criterion. A poorly photoshopped collage doesn’t do it for me. I spent a good few minutes convinced Tony Curtis’s head was pasted on top of Jack Lemmon’s body. I like how the typefont stays true to the title sequence of the film, and the idea is okay, but I don’t think it was executed particularly well. Their Magnificent Ambersons cover is fantastic, and comes out in the same month as this one.

So, yes, while it’s not terrible when comparing it to… everything else in this thread, it doesn’t hold up to most of Criterion’s other covers. At least to me.

Oh yeah, well spotted.

Oh my god! Finally Ambersons is getting an HD release (including the Laserdisc commentary). Thanks for the tip, definitely getting that one. David Byrne’s ‘True Stories’ in HD for the first time too (plus complete unreleased score). Shame it’s only the widescreen version and not the full-frame too but you can’t have everything. It’s gonna be a good Christmas!

I don’t recall the war planes in that From Here To Eternity scene.

I guess I wasn’t the only one disappointed with this cover. It’s been changed. I think it’s much better, truer to the tone of the film, but the O around Marilyn’s head could be improved.

This is okay, but the original poster stuck in the middle of the left side doesn’t really jive with the rest of it. Ruins the perspective. Like, why not just use the original poster?

They least they could’ve done was apply a filter to the original poster so it blends with the painting.

All DC’s upcoming rereleases look like this:

And in the time of greatest despair, there shall come a savior, and he shall be known as the Son of the Suns.
