I think why most people have problems with it is just for the above reason, they are looking at it as a remake of the movie. Its actually sad, but I dont think most americans realize that most of the movies they watch have their origins in book/print form (not talking about the script

I was also somewhat 'against' this movie at first too. by against i really just mean i had no interest to see it (even though ive read the book) but when i found out it was supposed to be closer to the book, and then saw the trailer i actually became interested to see it. Because the original has become such a classic I think that causes some resistance, I mean, how dare they change this classic movie (I think we can all relate to that) and that is where peoples (in general, i realize its not everyone, and that people on this board tend to be more 'cultured' than your average joe) lack of knowledge of the book, and that the new movie is a truer adaptation of the book hurts peoples perception on it.
I think im starting to ramble, so hopefully that makes some sense
