I recall seeing a mom & pop video store in a neighbouring city five years or so ago. I don’t know if it’s still in operation.
Hell there is even redbox at Walmarts now.
Does Redbox even carry tv shows? No glorified vending machine is the equal of a video store with thousands of titles.
Where were you in '77?

Others have been completely screwed by having a 30 minute span of time they couldn’t shop there in the middle of the night. (Although they should have warned him sooner)
They should have just gone to Target in the first place (though don’t know if they have redboxes).

Target has red balls, not boxes. Silly Dom.
I imagine there would be a physical media release eventually?
I reserve physical media purchases for things I’ve already seen and know I like, or perhaps something I feel I’m extremely likely to enjoy. I don’t have enough faith in any franchise beginning with “Star” at this point to blind-buy media.
Do you blind buy any media though? Not many do.
I used to quite frequently after I gave up on theaters (too expensive, crowded, and noisy) and stopped caring about being current, but once 4K became more prevalent, I pretty much stopped buying Blu-rays because I don’t have a 4K display yet and didn’t want to waste money on old media I’d probably replace (or jump into 4K early and end up replacing those because early releases on DVD and Blu-ray were often shit).
I’ve found 1080p streaming, while not as good as Blu-ray, to be adequate in the meantime, especially since I watch more TV than movies these days and care a bit less about A/V quality for TV shows.

Pity there isn’t some sort of video store one can rent physical media from these days. 😉
I don’t know what you’re talking about.
Is that a recent photo?
Don’t know the answer to the question but that’s what the family video in my town looks like.

4K is the niche within a niche though. And now we have more questionable color decisions being made on 4K remasters, and seldom an original audio mix in sight. I’ve read not every 4k display has all the new color tech, and yet another format has been unleashed on us where all the finer specs weren’t finalized. Yay progress!

I’d say if you buy a 2018 4K display with Dolby Vision and HDR10+ (either out of the box or promised in a future firmware upgrade), you’re pretty much covered. There are some other benefits to HDMI 2.1 like variable refresh rate, but that applies mostly to gamers.
I’ll probably cave on Black Friday and make the jump. I like to sit pretty close to the TV, and while my Pioneer plasma has held up remarkably well, I can see pixel structure and occasional aliasing. Even 1080p sources see some benefits in that regard when upscaled to 4K.

Family Video has been around forever, and isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.

Once it’s on physical media I can get it from Netflix. Although I never do that with TV shows, I reserve that one-disc-at-a-time for movies I want to see that aren’t available to stream on Netflix or Amazon (which is most movies these days, unfortunately).

Streaming has incredibly limited options, especially for older films and brand new releases.
Also, anyone thinking about getting a 4K TV should definitely take a look (especially during Black Friday). They’re relatively cheap now.

I feel like we’ve had this conversation before but it didn’t used to be that way. Netflix used to have a real good film library, but they put that money into developing their own content now.
We definitely had that conversation before. That was before FilmStruck came around.
The last Jedi is on Netflix streaming. Anybody else surprised by this? So is Rogue one. But I think it’s just those two.

No one is surprised by Netflix.
They’ll both be gone by next year I bet, as Disney’s working on their own service.

no one would take that bet, as this is common knowledge

I assume it was a pre-existing deal from the TFA days. Clone Wars is still on there too.

We probably have, and I only kinda agree. Their past film library has always been shoddy on streaming. But it’s certainly gotten worse since they focused on originals.

Yeah FilmStruck has easily the best film selection.

Just those two for SW, but you’ll notice every Disney film since 2016 is on there. Disney made a deal with Netflix (though they’ve since altered it).

A quick google search will even reveal official confirmation that they’ll leave Netflix next year.
Although Star Wars movies won’t be on Disney’s service until 2025 because of a really near-sighted deal they made with Turner.
That makes no sense to me. How can they put it on Netflix and not on their own service? I’m going to have to read some more on this deal.
EDIT: As far as I can gather, Turner has the broadcast/streaming rights to all the films made up to the point the deal was made. Hence why Netflix has the new films. I guess.
Even though the new Picard series is being reported as a series on its own and not connected to Discovery, I still find I have little to no enthusiasm for the show considering 1) We’ve had 15 years of Picard (from TNG to Nemesis); and 2) CBS/Paramount seems to be unable to find, or care about finding, people who can write Prime Universe Trek competently. There’s also nothing to say that Sir Patrick will hold his character to the standard it should be set despite bad writing/directing/showrunning, as Mark Hamill took issue with Old Luke (at least at first) and yet portrayed Luke like that anyway.
I have more excitement for The Orville renewing for Season 2.
chyron just put a big Ric pic in your sig and be done with it.
Yeah, pretty much. We already got four lackluster films. But I’m cautiously optimistic, since Stewart seemed a little wary to return. So I’m hoping that whatever they pitched him, was a good enough idea that will show in the finished production.
nvm

I dunno, I can find pretty much anything I’m looking for on Vudu to rent.

All of their new films will continue to be released on Netflix through March of next year. Captain Marvel will be the last.
