After 20 years they look the same to me.
This is a huge plot hole, there is no explanation to it. The only explanation is that Lucas needed a way to bring all the characters together without wasting story and budget by having the characters drive across the galaxy just to pick up C-3PO. You can go on about your damn memory swipe theory, but I'm going to be laughing in your face when Lucas doesn't even aknowledge this in Ep3.
