After spending some time fine tuning the shot by shot regrade for 4k77, here are the same updates reflected in the SE regrade:

Here’s the same color grading with a 70s bulb effect added:

Looks stellar as always, Dre.

I hope this won’t be taken the wrong way, but do you think once a reel is done or the film is done, you will probably be fine tuning shots anyway for consistency? I think these early shots have been 99% there for a very long time, and you’re fighting the good fight for utter perfection. But if you’re likely to revisit them and work on that last 1% in the end anyway, would it make sense to do the preliminary grades of other portions before this very-ultra-fine-tuning continues?

Not complaining, of course. 😃 I think of the dozens of samples you’ve shared in the last month or two, only one or two settings might have been slightly less than suitable to proceed with. I’d happily watch any of them, and perhaps I’m just a bit too eager to see what you do with portions of the film I’m not sure I’ve seen you work on much.

(could have posted this in the 4k77 thread as well -they’re both looking great.)

I agree with Towne. Since the beginning of the thread, the colors have been very nice.

Perhaps you could move along to a full film v. 1.0 balanced ? There always will be place for nitpicking and perfectionism. 😉

Don’t worry. I’m working on other shots. 😉 I decided to use a balanced grading as a basis for 4k77 and the SE regrade, rather than the very warm grading I started off with. This actually makes the process a little easier.I had updated 4k77, but not the SE regrade thread, and so here we are.

I’ve finished references for 20 shots of the “Meeting Ben” sequence that will be used for both the shot by shot regrade of 4k77 and the bluray:

Here’s a subset of finished reference shots from the Death Star Conference room sequence:

The next batch of reference frames is finished. Here are all three sets:

Excuse me Dre, but I noticed that your screenshots of 4K77 have been slightly cropped and zoomed in compared to SE Blu-ray. Is this really the case?

Author
Time

Yes, as far as I can tell 4k77 has more cropping than the bluray. I think this was also the case for theatrical projections.

Author
Time

Oh, OK. So it’s a matter of bringing it closer to a theatrical projection.

I think as these screen caps are the references and not from the final output it’s safe to say that the Blu-ray color corrected version will maintain the Blu-ray cropping.

IIRC, it’s just as wide as it can be, because of the blemishes on the sides of the print which create an unfixable and distracting “noise”.

That looks really good!!! 😃 The project is going slowly. I’m trying to get a color correction for TESB finished asap, so that’s taking up most of the time available to me. I did do a correction of the Derann print preservation, that might come in handy for this project:

It’s been a little quiet on this front. Having to divide my time between being a parent to a wonderful young boy, and these projects is challenging, but I found a way to go forward. I will be attempting to create the best shot possible given my own capabilities, and the references available. I will try to get at least one shot finished each day. As I will be using NeverarGreat’s great work as the source, I hope to get a V1 out there relatively soon, that takes advantage of the good consistency in NeverarGreat’s work. Anyway, I’m focussing on getting the most of of the bluray, and so quality to me matters more than speed. I already shared the first shot in NeverarGreat’s thread.

Here’s a short video I made to show how the colors look in motion:

Here is a link to download a higher quality version, since the youtube conversion seem to have affected the brightness and saturation somewhat:

Can’t wait until you regrade The Holiday Special.
