Finn could use the saber but he was not as skiled as that stormtrooper or Kylo, that much is clear. This all makes sense.

If you remember, just five minutes before the First Order showed up, Han gave Finn a blaster and he accepted it. I’m not disappointed that Finn used the lightsaber, I just think JJ originally had some kind of Jedi path planned for Finn, and Maz’s intuition that he could use the saber was a hint at it.
