Was Finn originally going to be a Jedi too?

If Finn is not force sensitive, wasn’t it irresponsible for Maz Kanata to shove a lightsaber in his hand and send him off into battle? Seems like JJ originally planned for Finn’s journey to continue another direction in episode 8.
Just a thought.

Nah it’s just a JJ mystery box tease. Plus marketing red herring stuff.

I believe the answer is a solid maybe. From what I understand, he was supposed to have the lightsaber call to him, same as Rey. I’m still hoping Finn and the force become more acquainted in IX, I think that’d be an interesting direction.

Oh the complaints then…

So yes I hope it happens too.

I hope they all become Force users and the entire galaxy kills itself ala The Purge but with laser swords.

The End.

Because non Jedi can use lightsabers too. Remember a guy called General Grievous?

Grievous was trained by Dooku.

And Finn was trained in hand to hand combat as a stormtrooper. Its not as if you need force powers to use a lightsaber.

That’s your first choice? Remember Han Solo?

Opening a ice creature (poorly) counts as a non-Jedi using a lightsaber?

We’re talking combat here.

Or you could just… You know… Use it like a sword in close combat.

Unless you’re suggesting everyone in medieval times was force sensitive. In which case I’m listening.

Most every knight was trained to use a sword before going into battle or they didn’t last long. Moreover, they didn’t go up against an enemy with semi-automatic carbines.

Drop mic.

I don’t see what the problem is. Finn, like that stormtrooper he faces in TFA, has hand to hand combat training, that staff that the stormtrooper uses is like a lightsaber, I don’t see anything wrong with him being able to use it. Its not like hes deflecting blaster bolts with it.

He got his ass handed to him by a stormtrooper with a crowd-control staff. If Lando was in a gunfight, you wouldn’t take away his blaster and give him a lightsaber. For some reason Maz had faith Finn could use the Jedi weapon, or she’s got a weird sense of humor.

I don’t get why this is a problem. Finn could use the saber but he was not as skiled as that stormtrooper or Kylo, that much is clear. This all makes sense.

Would this make you happier?

Finn “I need a weapon”
Maz “Ok, hang on, ill find you a blaster. There’s one around here somewhere.”

If you remember, just five minutes before the First Order showed up, Han gave Finn a blaster and he accepted it. I’m not disappointed that Finn used the lightsaber, I just think JJ originally had some kind of Jedi path planned for Finn, and Maz’s intuition that he could use the saber was a hint at it.

This is one of the weirder complaints I’ve heard about TFA.

Inb4 “not a complaint just a thought.”

This thread just reminded me of a character from the old EU aka Legends continuity, Darca Nyl (or was it Draca?), a guy who despite not being Force-sensitive learned to wield a lightsaber to the point of managing to deflect blaster bolts and could hold his own against Force users in lightsaber combat.

His (second) lightsaber was red, too.

He was an awesome character.

Corellians, during the purge, will begin by slaughtering sunbathers on beach planets until their feeble blade skills improve.
